The Companion Games / Far Side line were started in 1993, and were marketed as usable with Star Fleet Battles. They marketed this line for several years without incurring a lawsuit, although SFB's designer held them to be illegal. In 1997, the company went bankrupt over their main line, the Galactic Empires collectible card game, as the CCG market dried up. The authors went on to release a successful Babylon 5 licensed game under the Game Component System. The lawsuit was never finalized.
The company in its short life time, from 1993 tot he spring of 1997, published 11 starfleet compatible products introducing 7 new races and released playtest material for at least 3 more races and had 4 more products in the pipeline.
The company also produced a starfleet battles oriented newsletter of which 20 issues were published called In-comming Fire. In addition, a magazine called Galactic Fire which provided additional info on Star Fleet Battles products and the Galactic Empries CCG. At least 3 issues were publishded and contained playtest material for new unpublished races.
