The original version of WS&IM was published by Battleline in 1974 before being picked up and published by Avalon Hill the following year. The most important differences are that the Battleline edition had unmounted maps but thicker counters that had the names of actual ships as opposed to the far less glamorous (but more flexible) four digit code of the Avalon Hill counters.
