One of my Top 3 games. I view each turn as a puzzle to be solved where the solution is a move that tries to accomplish your objectives. And that includes accounting for all the possible die roll outcomes! Definitely not to be viewed as a simulation, lots of things happen that seem odd. Example: Attacker losses don't exist at 4-1 odds or greater. Regardless of that, it's a blast to play and definitely rewards serious study.

Clean and lean game over the Ardennes.
I like the difference between Allied and German infantry,
between Allied and German artillery.
Good historical research.

I'd rate the gameplay an 8, but the terrific new L2 components bring it up to an 8.5. The game is quick and refined. It's also tense and a lot of fun.

This is an excellent, well-balanced nail-biter of a hex and counter wargame. The system includes many details ranging from Monschau artillery restrictions to Angriff attacks, but never feels fiddly. The L2 edition (I haven't seen any others), has beautiful counters and a nice stiff map. The rules are crisp, unambiguous, well presented, and easy to comprehend though it takes a few playings before some of the implications become apparent. The game includes two tense tournament scenarios playable in two-three hours with some experience, a long campaign game for true grognards, and several historical scenarios.

The game is well-supported at its CSW forum and the designer will often graciously answer e-mails personally within just a few hours!

NEVER PLAYED.
Eventually played three times, with great satisfaction. Rules clearly written and fun game; the edition deserve the title "Deluxe". [2009.12.18]

L2 version. Great game, one of my favourites, and close to being a perfect game; the rules are easy to learn and remember, which allows you to focus on strategy, not checking the rule book. And the game plays really, really well.

The L2 counters are absolutely amazing. If I could keep only half a dozen games from my collection, this would be one of them.

Bitter Woods and Iron Tide are my top two Bulge games. I tried Ardennes '44 recently, and it can't hold a candle to BW. It's too fiddly.

Really good game. Nice game components, sturdy map, easy-to-understand gamerules. The counters look fine and are big enough (9/16) to contain all necessery information, the mapboard is large and well printed. The game runs smoothly and offers lots of different tactics and strategies. The optional rules add more historical flavour and make the game even more tense.

Probably the most solid Battle of the Bulge game currently in print. I would have rated higher if: 1. There was more contrast between the German and British counter colors and 2.The map had come into pieces to allow play of the tournament scenario on a smaller table.

Another...urh..Bulge game. This one with updated, and indeed impressive, graphics. The designer also has an (3rd) edition by himself and the counters made by Rich Ogata for the German Army is shinning purple. Heard that certain dice rolls are critical at times, leading to a "big-show" at a particular point in the game. While the combat results table is a standard stuff, there are many special features in the game. This edition comes with an enlarged mapboard and counters, making gameplay real easy. The map, while using standard terrain symbols, does indicate results of extensive topography research. The counters are professionally rendered with 'tanks' silhouttes of every type. The use of tanks and mechanized units is more emphasized as there are many special rules to account for them. The combined arms doctrine is also simulated by shifting a column in favour of the attacker if the attack is coordianted with infantry and arty. Leaders are also featured on the counters, with "influence" rating on their combat units. The leaders are finally given their credit due on the battle. This game contains all the classic units, from infantry to panzergrenedier, from artillery to armor, from glider to paratroopers. All are here like a standard textbook. The use of reserve is particular important for expoliting the potential hole punched through the enemy. Otherwise, its sequence of play is the standard I-go-U-go. I like the classic feel in here, plus a wealth of historical information with which you can compare against with while you play. The rules are top-notch in a high clarity fashion. The endurance rating comparison is a unique touch on both sides' troop quality, whereas a DRM would be given to the side with a higher endurance rating of the units particpating in the combat. Very effective modeling. There are also extensive rules on artillery. There are tournament scenarios, very suitable for an afternoon play. These scenarios can be played and completed under 6 hours. There are many optional and variant rules, in fact, highest number of that I have ever seen. They are largely expansions on the core rules and be sure to check them often during play. The only minus is that they apread among different rule sections and apply to specific turn or turns only. So you have to remember them quite well to maximise them to your side advantages. Check out the annotated sequence of play on this page for a good overview. It would solve the problem. Overall, this game is really a labor of love that is designed with every intention that it is meant to be played and not just for looking. Given also the physical components of this game, I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in looking for a fine wargame.

The L2 version is SOOO nicely produced! Complex, but not too. You'll definitely have a challenge here. Pick up the expansion! Really. The color rules alone are worth it.

RULES: A pleasure to read, well illustrated and now in color.

HISTORY: Very good simulation. Reproduces the actual strategy well. Allows for alternative, but reasonable strategy. It also goes deep into the battle so the good guys get a chance to kick some Heinie Butt

GAME: Both sides have exciting decisions to make and options to choose from. Best of the Bulge games from the playable, compitative angle. Excellant replay as each side will want to try different approaches

OVERALL... If you like the AH style(-chess like) games, you will love this one.

L2 version Improves on the excellant AH versions, and as a bonus comes with a nice expansion for the American counterattack

What a fine and well tuned game. It was great to get back into the hex and counter, ZOC, CRT world again, but this time with large counters and a beautiful map. I am looking forward to a rematch.
