Wonderful little and quick filler
The theme has little in common with the gameplay, but what it sets out to do, it does really well. Some nasty backbitting, some luck pushing, all a 15 minutes fun.

A fast paced tableau creation game. I am not sure if you should always challenge the dealer on the off chance of getting a bonus token or not. Nevertheless this game is entertaining.

I have to admit, I don't care for artwork that tries to appropriate known pop culture icons indirectly. Playroom did this with Dead Man's Treasure (trying to cash in on Pirates of the Caribbean) and now Hazgaard is evidently trying to tie Dojo to Kung Fu Panda. I enjoyed the Kung Fu Panda movies, and I would buy a Kung Fu Panda game if it was good. But I don't like this type of approach. It reminds me of all the direct to video titles that use deceptive titles to try and cash in on consumers' desire to see current blockbusters.

That said, I enjoy playing Dojo. I like the card distribution method (lifted from games like Jetzt schlagt 13) as well as the bluffing involved in the duels. The way you form a grid with the cards is interesting and makes for a more complicated set collection game. This has made the game a little difficult for my kids to grasp.

This puts the game in the uncomfortable category of too complex for young kids, but probably unsatisfying enough for older kids and adults. But I rate the game a 7 because my kids still enjoy playing it.

Dojo is a nice little game, but replayability isn't that high, as it always plays pretty much the same. Good filler due to short playing time and easy rules.

The game lives up to its promise of playing in 15 min which is a big bonus. Personally I wish their was more focus on the direct conflict between characters rather that being focused on building a grid with lots of combos. At first I was afraid that trophies giving the winner special powers would make the game unbalanced but in most cases the dealer won and everyone had equal chances to be dealer so it worked well.

The decision to call the student/fighter cards TATAMI seemed strange but while putting the game away I noticed there is a very subtle tatami mat texture imbossed into the front of the cards. I guess this choice is meant to emphasize that the game is about building a dojo (symbolized by making a grid of tatami mats) rather then being about simply fighting and winning trophies. It makes for an interesting take on an old theme!

I hope the publisher will release a better English rulebook in the future. I feel like I'm missing out on alot because there is no flavor text in the rules to set the mood and the scoring system is much easier to understand with illustrated diagrams (like in the French version).

I like the fighting system but not the bingo part. There are too much special powers and rule-breakers that there can be no planning.
