Opinion in comparison to the 1st edition+road to legend:
Not sure if it's way better. There are many elements that are improved, like the defense and the reinforcements-spawning system, los, monster movement etc, but I hate the fact that you don't get real treasure or level-ups while in the dungeon and you have to buy it in between adventures. This makes the game almost purely tactical in nature. I'd surely break that rule if I designed dungeons.

Opinion without comparing to the 1st edition:
great dungeoncrawling game! wished for more yummy treasures.

This still feels a lot like Descent 1st Ed, but I like it better.
It is streamlined, and although I don't usually like streamlined versions of games I think the trade off here is worth it. The only problem with 1st Ed was that I could never find anyone to sit for 4-8 hours and play it. I hated that it only hit the table once a year or so. My friends who liked 1st Ed all like this much better, and so do I.

After only one play of the first scenario, I have to say I like this one a lot (except for the horribly broken LOS rules...)

I hated the first edition of this game and had hope for the second. I must say, that I'm loving the new edition. They've addressed most of the problems from the first edition and game play seems more balanced and the game plays a lot faster too.

Finally it feels more like a dungeon romp instead of a race. Especially with the very well done campaign rules, that are built into the game this time and no more constant monster spawns all over the place, forcing you to run instead of fighting, though that option is still available if needed.

I was also quite impressed with all of the scenarios included in the base game. I'm definitely looking forward to more plays of this.

Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

Wow! Everything just works. Less is more! Compared to the first edition, Descent 2E has fewer miniatures and a lot less chrome (rules, components). The bloat was taken out but the game hasn't been stripped back to a bland, abstract game. There's still some tactical crunch here.

I read ahead to the next scenario and so far, the scenario design looks solid. I also like the effort put into the narrative.

I'm excited and I can't wait to get this back on the table to continue my solitaire campaign, but I'm also looking forward to teaching my kids to play. (If my son ever forgives me for turning his character into a monkey when we played the first edition )

First impression rating: 8+. A keeper.
