Very beautiful and elegant game, in components and play.
Once you figured out the sympolic language, it plays very smooth.

Despite numerous annoying graphic design flaws and mechanical design fiddliness, this is an excellent tableau-building card game with fresh ideas, an open feel, and elements uncommon to the its genre. I've played it a lot on BGA.

Tactics aren't just about blocking or denial, and the strategy isn't just about pivoting between income and VP, or comboing for VP. The spatial activations are fresh, and the (usually oppressive) event cards distinguish Tournay from a typical tableau builder. I really like the strategic interaction of the differential-VP scoring.

The "board" is comically unnecessary and the iconography fairly bad:
* art is prioritised over clarity
* the arrow looks like a greater-than sign
* "gain money from event card" looks like gain money
* "all other players" icon for scoring is inconsistent with "all players" icon on the Courthouse
and the references explain arbitrary icon phrases rather than the component icons.

Worse, the rules are annoyingly fiddly (I have read through all 8 pages of rules forum posts):
* Two kinds of draw action
* Two kinds of draw effect on cards (the normal draw actions, which is either of the two above, and a draw-two-cards action that is different)
* Hand limit of 4 cards
* Two kinds of event cards (one with increasing cost, but no indication thereof)
* Limit of 12VP per prestige building, with no indication on the card
* Ability to build duplicates of level I and II buildings, but not level III, with no indication on the cards
* Game-end trigger: on the start player's turn, two players have built out their city, or one player has and there have been enough Town Criers
* Final simultaneous build
* It's completely unclear that you can pay with covered-over cards

These make the game a nightmare to teach cleanly.

This game really shines with 4 players and the "advanced" rules. If you have played and thought that the decisions were not that interesting, play it again with 4 people and the "advanced" rules!

For some the learning curve might be a bit steep, because of the icons. But once you get the semantics, you can start building nice combos.

Even though this game is lighter than Troyes, I don't think this is Troyes light. In the same way that RTFG isn't Puerto Rico light.

After knowing Troyes I had high expectations with this one. And they were not disappointed.
Its a totally different from Troyes in terms of mechanisms but equally great. The dice as random element in Troyes has been replaced by Cards in Tournay.
The biggest difference is that while in Troyes you can see nearly everything from the beginning in Tournay you'll have to get to know the cards and learn what to search where.
This is the reason why I don't own the game yet: You'll need a few games under your belt to start knowing the options and less experienced players might not enjoy the first game enough to want to play again.

Played once.
