A "for variety" expansion, hence same rating as base game. Some extra sphere cards and heroes, but the real attractions are the three new scenarios and the new sets of encounter cards used in these scenarios and the upcoming scenarios in the 6 expansions in the cycle to come. New monsters, new locations, new challenges. The scenarios here (basically travelling through Moria) are a mix of featuring locations with average threat but big travel costs (lots of questing) to virtually no locations but a mass of monsters. The last features a deck of quest cards that are randomised and revealed at start of quest phase. An interesting new concept. This expansion allows dwarf based decks to start getting serious, and also allows creation of the Ziggy Stardust support deck (where Zigil, Beravor, Keen-eyed Tooks and Gildor combine to produce an economic engine with masses of cards and money to pay for them). Great for deckbuilders, less interesting for vanilla sphere players.

Expansion:

Very cool adventures. The new mechanics are awesome too.

The first adventure can be tough. It forces you through a few locations and you cannot optionally engage nor will the enemies engage you. It is easy to get landlocked. Bring Northern Tracker and anything to do damage in the staging area.

Second adventure was not too difficult.

Third adventure was hard for me. Tons of treachery cards. I really had to make unusual decks to win this adventure.

Strong deluxe expansion with a heavy emphasis on Dwarves. The quests are a bit unbalanced in difficulty and the last one requires a bit of luck.

Heroes: Dwalin and Bifur get a lot of adventure time as part of my dwarven deck. There are no alternatives but their abilities aren't too bad. Dwalin's Threat decreasing ability works great when there are many Orcs around. Bifur's resource ability is really helpful in trisphere decks.
Player cards: There aren't many cards I want to include in every deck in this one. There are some cool Dwarven-themed cards though. Dwarrodelf Axe, Khazad! Khazad!, Durin's Song and Erebor Record Keeper comes to mind. Luckily, Zigil Miner isn't as ridiculous as used to be pre-nerf.
Quest/Encounter decks: The story-connection between the three scenarios is much clearer than in the base game. There are some very nasty enemies and treacheries. The 2nd quest is one of those, where it's difficult to maintain Encounter deck control. Things can get ugly real quick.

Very cleverly designed first big ("de-luxe") expansion for LotRCG.
Thematically appropriate the players get swarmed by orcs and goblins. Fighting gets much more important than in the Mirkwood cycle.
Some cards from the core set that I deemed far too weak to include them in my Mirkwood decks now make an all-star-like reappearance.

This is a very strong deck for all three scenarios:

Very good expansion. The dwarve and moria thematic is just awesome. You feel the pressure of being in the Dark, surrounded by a lot of Orcs !

Be careful to your threat level, you won't have time to stop for a lunch while questing in Khazad Dum !

At the first time I hadn't liked the scenarios from this expansion but after couple games I changed my opinion. The first scenario is fery difficult but is my favourite from this box. The second one is very random. You can win fast or you can play and play and you finally don't win after 50 minutes.

I'm by no means an expert at CCGs/LCGs and this series is an intro into deck building for me. I enjoy it and find the quests quite thematic. As K-D was my favorite part of the LOTR story, this game works for me.

As to the quests, I enjoyed them though the last one seems really swingy between overly easy or ridiculously hard depending on how things are shuffled.

Into the Pit seems to start tough, but if you can amass an army and start running through at the end, it isn't much of a problem.

A DL3 seems a bit low based on our first play through of The Seventh Level. However, once an army is built up it really does begin to feel easy.

Flight from Moria's ending quests can really be hit or miss, especially the one where you need to draw treachery. I still like it.

Very much enjoying the quests of this expansion. I like that they are thematically linked, one after another. There are many good player cards for Dwarf-based decks. As is always the case with Fantasy Flight, I wish the box insert was more useful.

So far I've played only Into the Pit scenario (a success in the 3rd try) and it's ok with interesting abilities of the particular stages, but overall, not a very distinct adventure.

Into The Pit (5)
Everything old is new again! This quest is excellent: three parts with a lengthy first stage; enemies, treachery and location cards that feel tough without being too swingy; the freshest quest since JDtA.

The Seventh Level (4)
This quest is a real brawler as you make your way to the Seventh Level of the mines before being ambushed and having to fight your way back out. Short but sweet.

If you're going to be tired and half-naked, you might as well be underground, too.

You're forced to take deck-building more seriously with the tougher scenarios - not just in this expansion, but in all the expansions - but that's the nature of the beast.

Based on a run of barely-won scenarios and a huge upswing in family interest, there's a good chance that LOTR will soon be one of the few games rated 9 or higher in my collection.
