Hero: Can't wait to try out Elrond's sons. By himself Elladan seems a little pricey.
Player cards: Two more Secrecy cards. Bombur is going to shine once we get down into Moria again. I am anxious to try Rivendell Blade in that Elrond's sons deck. Hail of Stones is a great new way of doing a preemptive strike.
Quest/Encounter cards: Difficulty 4 seems appropriate. If you can manage your Threat value, the new Ambush mechanic doesn't seem too bad.

Decent but ultimately forgettable quest. Plays well with The Redhorn Gate since both involve escorting Arwen.

It's a "for variety" expansion so it gets the same as the base game ... except that it loses a rating point for having a virtual "you lose" card in the encounter deck (Sleeping Sentry, which discards all exhausted cards if dealt as a shadow card, and exhausts all cards if revealed normally, which is almost as bad when you have a monster heavy deck such as this one). If you can't manipulate the encounter deck through Denethor et al, than every game you play of this is scenario is a lottery. Otherwise, there's not many locations, lots of small to mid-range monsters which need to be whittled away as they come up, and the quest cards require lots of questing. Lots of allies required.

Road to Rivendell adds some much needed elf support. I had expected the Dwarrowdelf adventure packs to focus primarily on dwarves, but with Elladan as a hero and only 3 of the 9 player cards referencing dwarves, I'm pleased with the variety.

Quest (Dwarrowdelf 2/6, DL = 4): This is a fun quest. It doesn't do anything new (it simply requires you to travel through the quest deck), and nothing particularly exciting, but it is fun to play. Somehow the theme of the encounter deck seemed exactly like I imagined Tolkien's wild lands to feel. Also, I think I enjoyed this quest so much because I had just played The Redhorn gate (which I didn't like). After the long slog over the Misty Mountains, this jaunt to Rivendell felt like a breath of fresh air.

There are a couple shadow effects that can cause Arwen -- whom the heroes are escorting -- to die and there's not much the players can do. Eleanor is crucial for this adventure to cancel treacher cards. In addition, be sure to have Burning Brand, Test of Will, Hasty Stroke, and Dunedain Watcher on hand and then hope for a fortuitous shuffle.

A devilish scenario that tries to kill you with Treachery and Shadow cards. But if you stack your deck with some ways to handle these (A Test of Will, Hasty Stroke, Dunedain Watcher et al.) it is actually quite easy to overcome.

For Lord of the Rings: The Card Game I could write 10 pages of glowing review and still not give the game enough praise. The game is just that well designed.

So let me say this -

This is the best deck-building card game currently in print.

That is a big statement and true in every sense.

In fact, the best thing I can say about this game is that I have created an entire Geek List just for it. You can find it here -

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/176849/lord-rings-card-gam...

This game is sheer beauty at every step.

The design is fantastic with wonder cooperative game play against a brilliantly brutal A.I.

The artwork is lovely.

The theme fits perfectly and is worked well into the game. Truly an integrated theme.

I could keep going, but I am sure my point is made.

I can only think of three drawbacks for this game. First, this is a living card game, so continually buying the new Encounter packs is essential if you want to keep going. Second, this is a true deck building game and some people do not like the deck build aspect. Third, the game is really difficult. Be prepared to lose a lot. This is frustrating for some so they stop playing. But life in Middle Earth was never easy.

Pros -
- Absolutely brilliant in every way

Cons -
- Deck building, living card game and the extreme difficulty could turn some away

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lord of the Rings: Card Game has numerous expansions. To name them all is silly because there are so many. This is due to the living card game nature. New expansion and Encounters continue to come out on a regular basis.

Instead I think it is better to describe each type of expansion. There are 3 types of expansions for this game that are actually part of the game and contain player cards. While all 3 types are different they are extremely similar within their type. There are 2 type of Expansions that exist sort of outside the game.

The first type of expansion is called an Adventure Pack. These are small box expansions that provide a single new challenge or Encounter. Each contains a new Hero and two new cards for each color Sphere. These are part of a larger group called a Cycle, which is 6 Adventure Packs together. Each Cycle is named for the general aspect of the story it encompasses.

The second type of expansion is called Deluxe Expansions. These are big box expansions and provide the player many new Encounters, usually 3. Also included are many new Heroes and cards for each color Sphere. These are stand-alone expansions that explore, in great depth, a single scene of the story. The new cards are all based around that part of the story.

The third type of expansion is called Saga Expansions. These are big box expansions that focus on moving the story forward. Each Saga Expansion is actually 2 big box expansions. Both together equal the Saga Expansion. Each big box contains many new encounters, usually 3. Also included are many new Heroes and cards for each color Sphere. The new cards are all based around that part of the story.

All 3 of those expansions in inside the game and contain player cards to aid the player.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is also a fourth type of expansion called a Print on Demand.

These are Encounters only, no Heroes or player cards, and are of extreme difficulty. These are used for tournament play.

These are great additions to the game and good for testing your deck building abilities.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additionally there is a fifth type of expansion called a Nightmare Deck.

Nightmare Decks are based on each of the expansions and are simply much more difficult versions of the Encounters already available. These are Encounters only. No Heroes or player cards.

The game is already very difficult and the Nightmare Decks are downright harsh.

These are strictly for the experienced deck builder.

Simple game. However, you can quickly become decimated with two treachery cards: Sleeping Sentry (x2) and Orc Surge (x2). That aspect makes this one interesting. Ensuring you are prepared for them and have an effective means of dealing with them, you'll be fine.

The Lord of the Rings LCG is so good I can't really believe FFG made this (well, after seeing the huge amount of faqs and clarifications I actually believe it was made by them...).

The second cycle of expansions adds more awesomeness in form of new heroes, cards for the decks, and new quests.

Road to Rivendell has some new interesting player cards, but the scenario itself is one of the less challenging ever: with tuned decks is very easy to get to the end without much trouble...

Probably the worst adventure pack of the Dwarrowdelf cycle. Most of the player cards are completely useless. I found most of the encounter cards were easy to defeat except for 2 treachery cards that were insanely overpowered (Sleeping Sentry can make you instantly lose the game).
