Love this game!, recently its become my first choice to playing with newbies as an intro to real games--the game basically teaches itself in the first couple of rounds, but has real decisions and challenge once it gets started

Absolutely fantastic game. Mechanics fit really well in the theme. The idea is really surprising. Components are good, on the funny side, but work fine in general. I do not like the umbrella for protecting against sun... The most difficult part to get on with is the climate chart. I also liked the idea of the end of the game because of the meteorite...
UPDATE: After playing the second edition, now I find the umbrella to be a really cool element

An enjoyable, fun game which offers a range of different possibilities each time you play. Serious gamers may get bored, but excellent for a group with some semi serious game players.

Updated comment 1 year on: We love to pull this out for a fun game whenever we can..

I've played this game a few times and every time I play I at least once get confused over what I need to do to keep my guys alive when the weather changes. Also every time I play, I at least once have to be juvenile about where I add the acquired parts to my dinosaur. A pretty fun game.

I used to really enjoy this game but I've since got burned out on it.

edit: been a while since I last played it and I think I might enjoy a game of it again.

edit: ok, it's been many years since I've played and I'd definitely enjoy a game of it again.

I love the evolution & dinosaur themes. I think the chaotic nature of Evo is the biggest turn-off. Chaos comes from the dice-rolling (for climate change) and the action cards (which can put a hurting on players for multiple turns). Primary sources of player interaction in Evo are the auctions, dinosaur battles, and placement of baby dinosaurs. Auctions can be good or bad. I think auctions are tough for newbies & casual gamers because these players don't have a handle on the "true value" of items up for auction. Another reason Evo tends to annoy me is the whining... why did you attack me... why did you birth your dinosaur in the only spot where one of my babies could survive... so-and-so has more points, why didn't you block/attack him instead, etc. This definitely makes the game drag.

I won the game but only because I didn't bid on anything and saved my mutation points. Maybe more incentive to bid would be better. It would have a better rating if it was shorter. it seemed to drag on a little.

Good integration of the dinosaur theme. Nice watching your clan of dinos grow and mutate and head for the best climate spaces on the board. The climate itself is a major wildcard, and combat is equally unpredictable, so the game can feel a bit random. But I guess that's okay with me, it gives it some tension. Cool art and interesting card play that reminded me a little of how the cards work in Zombies! for some reason. Seems like this would be a good family game.

(Original 2011 edition copy). Enjoyable family Eurogame. Players are dinosaurs adapting to their environment and staving off their inevitable extinction. It blends several mechanics nicely: auctions (to "mutate" into more adaptable dinos), good old fashioned "hose your neighbor" card play which breaks the rules, and territory management/planning.

The artwork on this game is cartoon excellence (although one card is slightly "adult" - see threads). Great for kids - non-confrontational gameplay and not too much of a brain-burner. Much fun adding mutations to the dino playmats. Who doesn't love dinosaurs?

Nice theme tied together by a hodgepodge of mechanics, some worked and others didn't. The dynamic between the seasonal changes, the climate your tokens are on as well as how evolved they are to determine their ability to survive is an interesting one. However, I did not care for the action cards, the combat nor the auction for the evolutionary advances. None of the above were implemented well and I would go as far to say that they made the game worse. It isn't all bad but the unpleasant elements stood out enough to make me reconsider my desire to play Evo again.
