A simple take on the Napoleonic Wars. The "Axis & Allies" tie-in comes from the battle board which is similar to the mechanic used in A&A. Each unit rolls a certain die number to hit. This game gives a grand strategy approach from a 20,000 foot level. Don't go looking for details at the tactical level. Just armies and navies duking it out. The bits are the same ones found in their Napoleon 100 days games.

Preliminary rating of 7 based on one solo play. I rather enjoyed W&P, although I do have a fair bit of patience for Axis and Allies-type games, of which this is one. The board is decent if not terribly flavorful, with everything but capital names abstracted out and fairly regular lines dividing up regions. I like the hard-plastic pieces quite a bit, actually, though they get a bit tippy, particularly perched on stacks of the chips used to designate 1 and 5 units. While the small counter sheet for the control markers would be fine in theory, but numerous counters are just intentional "duds" that could've been more markers.

The rules are simple enough--simpler than many A&A rules sets because they lack much differentiation by unit--but certain information is hard to find even through only a few pages of actual rules (e.g., the diplomacy track rules being in a couple different places). We get a pretty extended example of play that's not strictly necessary, but it does help clear up a few points that the rules leave unclear. There are also a few things just not really addressed at all, like how multinational forces operate (although it's easy enough to figure out that they move/attack separately but defend together). The setup chart is on the back of the rule book and on the back of the battle board, but there's no player aid, and even the setup fails to note what the starting resource points are for each major country. Editing is sloppy throughout, with a few rule sections misnomered, a key rule dropped out (covered in an erratum sheet), and numerous small errors.

Gameplay is decent and about what one would expect from an A&A clone. It's pretty much punch-punch-punch. My solo play bogged down to a grind, with France increasingly cut off but somehow managing to churn out enough resource points to keep restocking. Partly this was the result of my poor play of Britain, which vacillated between a range of approaches, allowing France to get up off the mat.

I'm pretty sure I agree with those who've suggested at least giving Britain the ability to achieve diplomatic success on a 1 or 2 (instead of the 1 allowed by the RAW) and allowing Britain to spend multiple success on potentially multiple nations' tracks (instead of the maximum 1 allowed by the RAW). Diplomacy *should* be an important tool for Britain; instead, as written, it's a total crap shoot unlikely to pay off. I think 3 RP might still be too expensive for even this variant, but it's worth a shot.

There are probably better A&A games; there are almost certainly better Napoleonic strategy games. But this one is a decent enough time if you know what you're getting into.

Fun because it's "Axis & Allies meets Napoleon." However, heavily imbalanced towards the French and scripted play. Alliance track introduces politics, but doesn't work as well as they intended. Supports 5-players, but way better with 2, because only England and France are fun playing.

I'm not a fan of Axis & Allies, but I am making an exception for this game, glad I bought it and look forward to playing it soon. This game sort of reminds of "Age of Napoleon", but easier to understand and play.
