Expansion:

First quest Peril Pelargir is like a bar fight. You are handed a scroll to deliver and instantly you get jumped. You battle back and forth as you try to get the scroll. You spill into the city streets and eventually you have to get the scroll and find yourself on the docks.

Second quest Into Ithilien you travel to meet Faramir. He has already left for Cair Andros. The group you meet is in a battle and you join in to help them.

Third Quest Seige at Cair Andros. You come to the city and it is under siege. You join the battle and fight as your defenses fall you fight to the bitter end and if you are lucky you win.

Great story arc and fun quests.

The different questing mechanics really mess with the deck structures. I'm not one for customizing decks based on scenario but I might need to in this case.

Heroes: Beregond is a power house in the new Siege quests. His ability is also quite interesting, but so far there aren't too many attachments that are covered by his ability and that you would really put on him, namely Spear of the Citadel and Citadel Plate. But I hope that number will grow in time. Boromir's passive stat buff is not as exciting as Dain's, but it will become more and more powerful once we get more Gondor stuff in the AtS cycle.
Player cards: I'm not (yet) overly excited about the cards in this set. It's nice to see the first glimpses of what's in store for Gondor. At first glance Tactics got the most cards with universal appeal. Defender of Rammas and Spear of the Citadel along with Errand-rider are my personal highlights in this set (so far). A Watchful Peace could have a lot of potential in certain quests, but I have yet to put it to the test. Master of Lore post-FAQ is still intriguing. It makes me want to explore the Lore sphere more.
Quest/Encounter decks: The quests haven't found general appraisal by the community (you might say unjustly). They challenge the players to rethink their decks. The first two can be pretty tough, and things can go from tough to really bad pretty darn fast. I've enjoyed the change in scenery and love the new quest mechanics (Battle/Siege).

Expanding the LotR-CG universe by three new quests which put emphasis on attack on defense in a new way.
Willpower is nowhere as important as it used to be.
Especially the third quest, Siege of Cair Andros, enforces a very sophisticated deck building approach.
But also the first quest (Peril in Pelargir) wreaks havoc on your trusted multi-sphere decks.

A for variety expansion so it gets the same rating as the base game. A really interesting thematic twist gets provided to the overall game here, where suddenly most of your questing is done using attack and defense, turning deck design on its head. Or in other words, allowing those who eschewed the whole Spirit-quest thing in order to build fun battle-based decks to get to bask in the newfound glory of their decks. A nice turn-up to keep the game fresh. Having said all that based on the first scenario, the second scenario (Into Ithilien) just smacks you from the start and keeps on smacking you - it's one of the most turn-me-off-the-game scenarios I've played to date.

Heirs of Númenor is the third deluxe expansion for LOTR LCG, and it adds a bunch of new cards to the base game.

There's a small stash of new cards for the players decks, centered around Gondor cards. A new version of Boromir and the defensive powerhouse Beregond are the brand new heroes. Notable cards are Defender of Rammas (a strong defender for a mere cost of 2) and the "mana-fixers" Errand-rider and Envoy of Pelargir.

There's also three new scenarios (together with some cards that will be used in the next cycle), all taking place into the lands of Gondor.

There is a definite ramp up in the difficulty of scenarios: into Ithilien is listed at 4, but is definitely at least a 8! And the Siege of Cair Andros is even more difficult...
Together with the increased challenge, there is a change of paradigm: from this box onwards, things will change forever! Willpower won't be the only statistic used for questing...

The Pelagir quest was fun at first, but it gets stale after repeated plays because the encounter deck is so small and gets cycled so quickly. Played solo 3X, double-fisted (Mono Tactics and Spirit/Lore). Beorn and damaged Gimli are pretty invaluable for questing.

Into Ithilien is tough and if/when you win, the finish it tight. Great quest!

Siege of Cair Andros is epic. I love the feel of marauding orcs besieging the city while your characters scramble to defend the walls. Top notch quest.

This expansion is starting to make the game feel gamey.

LOTR LCG is one of my all time faves. I love the artwork and the feel of the game, especially they way that the course of cards and events has such a strong narrative and the fact that they bring the struggles and world of Middle Earth to life. However, I think the rules are over complicated and poorly explained and this is especially true of the Siege of Caer Andros. I actually had to make up my own rules in order to play this - a fact that FFG should count as a fail on their part!

For Lord of the Rings: The Card Game I could write 10 pages of glowing review and still not give the game enough praise. The game is just that well designed.

So let me say this -

This is the best deck-building card game currently in print.

That is a big statement and true in every sense.

In fact, the best thing I can say about this game is that I have created an entire Geek List just for it. You can find it here -

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/176849/lord-rings-card-gam...

This game is sheer beauty at every step.

The design is fantastic with wonder cooperative game play against a brilliantly brutal A.I.

The artwork is lovely.

The theme fits perfectly and is worked well into the game. Truly an integrated theme.

I could keep going, but I am sure my point is made.

I can only think of three drawbacks for this game. First, this is a living card game, so continually buying the new Encounter packs is essential if you want to keep going. Second, this is a true deck building game and some people do not like the deck build aspect. Third, the game is really difficult. Be prepared to lose a lot. This is frustrating for some so they stop playing. But life in Middle Earth was never easy.

Pros -
- Absolutely brilliant in every way

Cons -
- Deck building, living card game and the extreme difficulty could turn some away

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lord of the Rings: Card Game has numerous expansions. To name them all is silly because there are so many. This is due to the living card game nature. New expansion and Encounters continue to come out on a regular basis.

Instead I think it is better to describe each type of expansion. There are 3 types of expansions for this game that are actually part of the game and contain player cards. While all 3 types are different they are extremely similar within their type. There are 2 type of Expansions that exist sort of outside the game.

The first type of expansion is called an Adventure Pack. These are small box expansions that provide a single new challenge or Encounter. Each contains a new Hero and two new cards for each color Sphere. These are part of a larger group called a Cycle, which is 6 Adventure Packs together. Each Cycle is named for the general aspect of the story it encompasses.

The second type of expansion is called Deluxe Expansions. These are big box expansions and provide the player many new Encounters, usually 3. Also included are many new Heroes and cards for each color Sphere. These are stand-alone expansions that explore, in great depth, a single scene of the story. The new cards are all based around that part of the story.

The third type of expansion is called Saga Expansions. These are big box expansions that focus on moving the story forward. Each Saga Expansion is actually 2 big box expansions. Both together equal the Saga Expansion. Each big box contains many new encounters, usually 3. Also included are many new Heroes and cards for each color Sphere. The new cards are all based around that part of the story.

All 3 of those expansions in inside the game and contain player cards to aid the player.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is also a fourth type of expansion called a Print on Demand.

These are Encounters only, no Heroes or player cards, and are of extreme difficulty. These are used for tournament play.

These are great additions to the game and good for testing your deck building abilities.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additionally there is a fifth type of expansion called a Nightmare Deck.

Nightmare Decks are based on each of the expansions and are simply much more difficult versions of the Encounters already available. These are Encounters only. No Heroes or player cards.

The game is already very difficult and the Nightmare Decks are downright harsh.

These are strictly for the experienced deck builder.

The first scenario ('Peril in Pelagir') was the first real downer since 'Shadow and Flame' and it displayed the same issue - it chews you up right from the gate, and we were pretty sure we were dead from the end of the first round, and that turned out to be the case. This was 2-player using essentially the same decks (slightly tweaked as new cards come out) to play through all the scenarios in sequence.

Second scenario (Into Ithilien) - was even worse in this regard.

What I don't like about this, and 'Shadow and Flame', is that you are hit so hard from the start that the scenario comes down to the luck of the early card draw from the adventure deck and your own deck - and the likelihood is that we will have to draft in a vast number of new cards to beat this one scenario.

The given DL for scenarios 1&2 is a joke.
