With the right crowd in a mood to wheel and deal, could be an 8. With a group that is not in the mood to bargain, probably a 5.

My first foray into straight-up negotiation games - a positive experience.

Players back any of five potential candidates to become the next king, jockeying to get their choice "in office" (by reaching a 10 on a 1-10 scale) while also holding the most favor with the winner (a five on a scale of 1 to 5). Resource management includes influence cards and gold resources (which go up as your favor with each candidate goes higher).

Intrigue cards initiate votes which will raise or lower the standing of the five candidates. Votes are paid for with gold and influence cards. Highest payer in any vote (winning or losing) then assigns blame or credit (choosing which players move up or down on their own favor tracks with each candidate).

In negotiations anything goes - extortion, deals, bribes - which can affect the outcomes of card effects, votes, and status on the favor tracks and the candidate tracks. Not a bad game with three, and the game is totally different with two.

Rating goes up +1 for each player over three because the dynamics pitting players against players are better.

I bought the game because of the artwork by Phil Foglio, so the gameplay was secondary. But there is a game here that will scratch a wheeling-dealing itch.

For other Foglio artwork favorites see Girl Genius, GreedQuest, Strange Synergy, S.P.A.N.C., and Xxxenophile.

A game of influence. You don't want to be the new king - you want to be the right-hand man of the new king! I generally don't like bidding/auction games, but Succession works. No one vote is crucial, and it always seems like you have some say or some trick you can pull.

I like this game, but I don't think either of my two playings so far have proved that that it works well. Both were with 5 players, and perhaps fewer would have been better: without influence (cards/money) you can't be the highest bidder, without being highest bidder you can't increase your influence until your turn comes around, with 5 people that's a long time coming. Both games ended quickly, which one could blame on luck of the draw, but also on the group not playing well - I suspect with the right groupthink the game would go on a long time, with many swings of fortune and much fun had by all.

A very social game, since you have a lot of wheeling and dealing going on here. Also the fact that you try to stay in favour with the candidates, but also attempt to push a certain candidate to the throne is an interesting mechanic.

Good game with the right group. Some people play to seriously to really enjoy the randomness and uncertainty of it. I like it though.

The 2-player version was boring, as expected. (With just 2, no negotiation - and it's supposed to be a negotiation game.) I love the concept, though.

Only played once. In the voting stage it is very easy to lose all your money by over bidding to push your vote through.

A good light hearted game that can be fun with the right crowd. The randomness of the card drawing makes it a game to take lightly. It's fun wheeling and dealing and slamming your opponents victory into the ground.

This game is very fun when you have the full 5. Each character has his own advantages and begins with his or her own standings with the candidates which leads to hugely different ways to play each character, which is also dependent on how you negotiate with the other players.

This game can be very cutthroat, which is pretty much in the theme of the game, but might not be good for all crowds.

Lots of variety, intense negotiations, colorful components, great game.

Eh. I want to like. Foglio artwork, excellent production values. And I love King Me, Intrigue and Kremlin type of games. This one just fell short. It dragged, it was fidly, some things seemed unbalanced. A good effort, but needs something more.

The game seemed interesting when looking at the box, but reading the rules, it was clear it wasn't very balanced between the characters and the "everyone gets +1" cards resulted in a lot of micromanagement and nuisances when you forget about the chain reactions.

A bit awkward and clunky. Rules are not concise enough I feel. I think everything is explained alright, but if you are looking for specific information it is hidden in the paragraphs, which is a pain if you are mid-round and trying to move quickly.

I think players have to be really tough on each other to make this game work, otherwise everyone just gets what they want. Another solution might be to give everyone less money and so make it harder to buy your credit and make blame go away.

Could not even sell it for 0.99c on eBay. Gave to thrift store.

WOW So I was really hoping beyond hopes that this game was one of those unfortunate ones that was being unfairly beaten up by the geek populace. In fact after reading the instructions I was excited to play it. However this game is dull and your talking to someone who loves Junta. I was hoping this would clean up and make the game run smoother than Junta and to one extent it does as there is never any coup to deal with. BUT the game is just down right dull. Waiting on your turn is bleh and if someone pulls a hand of all or nearly all event cards at the beginning of the game their ability to play as many of them as they want really can be unbalancing depending on what events they have. Good idea, bad execution.

I bought this game at Gen Con because one of my frequent T&E opponents on VASSAL, Chad Ellis, was selling it at his booth. Unfortunately, the game itself ended up being kind of underwhelming, with stand-offs being quite probably and their being little reason to ever help anyone pass one of their intrigues. Luckily, it only cost $15, so it was not that big of a deal.
