A simple yet intense game. "Tom Jolly's

This game is like no other! I was taught it by the creator Tom Jolly himself at Kublacon 2005. I only played it once. I don't think that it's something that I'd want to play all the time, but it's got a really interesting real-time mechanic. One problem might be finding the right type of players. However, this game might be perfect for hyperactive kids. It feels like a very intense video game, so be prepared to have your pulse rate double.

people that groan about this one are playing the wrong game. it's FAST. if you want to have a calm turn, go play some chess. this is the BEST real-time action game i have played. simple, super fast, compact strategy and tatics. graphics blow. v1.0 rules are missing some improtant aspects. needs a high quality remake.

Played: Once. Simple mechanics come together to create complex gameplay. The lightning mechanic is genious of course. I wouldn't expect anything less from Mr. Jolly. Quick thinking with both tactics and strategy is needed for this game. Your strategy may change 3 or 4 times in one game.

Real time-ish strategy game. I enjoyed the chaos and want to try some of the other scenarios.

I wish the Starcraft boardgame had something like this game's real-time stuff.

Stop touching my guy! I was about to move!

Not to be confused with games that sound similar (e.g., Camelot Legends) but aren't fun.

The basic game can be a chore, but the advanced variants make it pleasantly wacky and bearable.

Probably best served as an occasional treat, this is a boardgame that makes ice hockey seem relaxed and non-confrontational.

Essentially an against-the-clock capture the flag light wargame, the simple but neat turn mechanism forces the pace and rewards quick play.

I can easily see that it's not for for everyone: if you're most comfortable with cerebral challenge games this may not be for you, but if you can think and act quickly and enjoy conflict there is fun to be had here.

May change my rating once I get a few more games in. When we played this last we did not know that you could not move thru "water, rocks, or trees" as there is no mention of it in the rules. It's nice to see that Mr. Jolly is on BGG and was kind enough to let us know!

NOTE THE ERRATA about terrain: it blocks movement!

Based on 3 plays with 4 players. Fast-playing, intense, feels even rougher than "normal" games when two people start ganging up on you. I like it, but then I won our first three games, ha ha ha!

(The map graphics are really awful. Having seen Dungeoneer, I know Thomas Denmark can do good work; what happened!? A hand-drawn map, even a cartoony one like Wiz-War, would be better.)

2009-10-31: dropping to a 6, as it's just not getting played.

This game is a frantic, capture the flag type of game. With multiple plays you could probably see through the chaos and have a lot of fun with it. Not being able to see if everyone is playing by the rules steers me away from this one.

Absurd real time game. Lots of rules to remember and pieces to manipulate. Basically it is football with different goalposts. Once one person gets the ball away from the pack it is tough to stop them. Nice idea, best with more players. Irritating if you have to resolve a rules or timing dispute when the game is still in progress.

Dissappointing. I really wanted to like this game. I think the idea of the lightning moving system is really cool, and after reading the rules, I was excited to play. Unfortunately, the game kind of turned into a stalemate where nothing was happening. It was cool at first, but after a while, everyone kind of realized that no progress was being made, nor was it likely to ever happen. The sword never moved very far in any direction, and the same situations and stalemates kept occurring. It gets a 5 based on the idea alone, but unfortunately, the game never draws to a conclusion. We had to stop in the middle of the game.

With the right group, this can be raucous fun. It was fun when I played it, but I can't see myself being eager to play it again. The game only seemed to prolong itself until people began to fatigue of the pace and the attrition, and at that point I would have much rather stopped playing and moved on to a different game, or the restroom.

This is a crazy frenetically paced game that has somewhat of a sloppy feeling when playing. It has a unique mechanic in that there are two turn tracks. In most games there is one turn track, 1st player goes, 2nd player goes, 3rd player goes, 4th player goes... In this game 1st player and 2nd player start at the same time, whoever finishes first passes the turn marker to the 3rd player, who ever finishes next passes the 2nd turn marker on to the next open player. If you take your turns quickly you can leave yourself open to receive the next available turn marker. Slowing down can easily get your turn skipped. This game probably needs some kind of time out rule.

Doesn't really work. The Lightning system is an interesting idea (allowing 2 players to move at once), but the game itself doesn't seem to gel well with it. There's just too much clutter and too much back-and-forth movement, plus a poorly designed map. Perhaps in the future the designer could take this unique system and work a better game around it.

After 1 play: if you played it as a take-your-turn wargame, it might have some potential for strategy and tactics, but the two turns cycling around the board as fast as the players could move basically destroyed any enjoyment I could have had from the game. I'm not sure at all, but I think I may have made erroneous (i.e. ILLEGAL) moves more than half the time, but no one noticed, and if someone else had blatantly cheated or been completely confused about the rules, I wouldn't have noticed and neither would anyone else. I have no intention of ever playing it by those rules again. I suppose that *might* change after I've played it a few times as an actual wargame, but it also might not. Basically, the game sucks when played by the given rules.

This game is better in concept than in reality. The turn system IS innovative and pretty cool, but there are too many rules for it to work well. A lot of arguments over the rules in our group. I suppose some people would love it, I do not.

This game is all about a cool mechanism for turn determination. Other than that the theme is weak and rules are vague so it isn't much of a game. I could see a good game evolving from this one, but I am glad I didn't waste my money on it.

This was crazy. Everybody was just playing their game and moving their pieces. No one was checking to make sure the rules were being followed. This game has very little structure. Finally someone had won, but we weren't sure they had played correctly because no one saw how they got from A to B. I don't have any interest in playing this again.

I'm just not happy with it. The "everyone moves at once" mechanic is just annoying, and the pieces are all too underpowered to do anything useful once someone latches onto the sword. I just don't see myself liking this game, which is good because none of the other people I played with liked it either.

Some interesting ideas such as slow players missing out on a turn because they took too long but the game is too complex to really be played at speed. There's no time to ensure that everyone's following all the rules when pieces are being chucked off by two players at once.

The semi-realtime aspect is actually quite good, but the underlying game just doesn't work well. Fundamentally the "one maguffin" structure just can't work well with lots of players. Here the game just locks up as it is easy to co-operate to stop anyone else winning, but near impossible to force a win for yourself. Add in some poor production values - a key missing rule, no ranges indicated on the counters with range attack, and it sadly doesn't add up to a great package.

Having two active players at once is an interesting concept, but it doesn't work here. There are too many fiddly wargame mechanisms like line of sight, weapon ranges and damages, and spell effects that have to be looked up or questioned. The only way this game would work is if every player has rules memorized cold, otherwise game devolves into exasperating chaos. I only played once, but noone will be able to talk me into playing again.

It's an interesting game design, allowing two people to play at the same time, controlled by two turn markers which get passed clockwise, potentially at different speeds depending on who plays fast and who plays slow on their turn. But there's so many biff units on the board that the chance of one person getting a unit to the middle and being allowed to escape is buckleys. Or massive ineptitude. So the game devolves to a tactical whackfest, where you get a mass of units out, array them and go out and whittle down your adjacent opponents. Combat is purely an outnumbering-within-range affair, no dice. And as in any multi-player game, whoever gets hit the least will have enough units at the end when everybody else is down to bare bones to come storming in and claim the prize. Or, as in our case, everything devolves to a standoff and we call the whole thing off as a waste of time.
