I think this is a great game design. Very tense and exciting. You need near max players though (not 2 or 3). The bluffing mechanic is better in this game than a lot of other games involving bluff. The game might benefit by receiving a new (more politically correct) setting though.

Good fun if played in the right spirit. The map and components are a bit crummy, but the game is sound and it can be a hoot, although you really need 7 players. The rules, although short, are quite unclear in several places.

A fun way to spend a couple of hours, but requires that all the players are forewarned about the quirks in rules, especially how to avoid being squashed early. A heavily diplomatic game that could be improved a lot. Don't play MEP with people who take themselves too seriously, though, nor with ones who are apt to hold grudges.

An excellent game of multi-player power politics. The production and careful expenditure of Oil is everything in this game. It determines how big your armies can be, how expensive they are to build, and how well they fight. Much easier to play than Junta and yet more thematic than vanilla Diplomacy. And just like the game Diplomacy, there are no dice, so it's a contest of bluff, skill, and, smooth-talking.

I played it once with 6 players. It's essentially a multiplayer variant of rock-paper-scissors. I was Irak and I eliminated Iran on turn 1 ! Oops... We stopped the game on turn 2. I suppose the game can be fun but there are some design flaws to say the least. I don't think the game can last more than a couple of turns so prepare another game for the evening.

Diplomacy-variant - and not a very good one. Played once as Iraq. It was fun to play - but don't feel the urge to get my own copy and play it again.

Bought despite negative reviews, was not as fun as I had hoped. Components are *horribly* designed. Our game was killed by game-long alliances; this really needs to be every man for himself. Still can't figure out the purpose of "UN resolutions." They don't seem to do anything.

Tentative 5.5. However many clever ideas this game may have, I have trouble forgiving the fact that an Iraq player can wipe out any of his neighbors on the first turn if he moves before them. The manual is aware of this problem and warns about it. Why not fix the problem??

I played through a full turn before deciding the optional chrome rules I was using were bad, so I need to play this again. (Specifically: Oil prospecting creates a new no-brainer move for all players, that slows the game down while injecting more oil and armies into the game. And OPEC's responsibility, to decide whether to return oil to the general supply, is an obvious "yes" for everyone but the player who will win if the game ends by oil depletion.)

The arms auction idea is cool in theory but since ANYONE can host an auction on their turn, there is no reason to get into a huge bidding war. Just wait for the next auction. Unless you really want to deny someone some forces.

The idea of buddying up to a superpower for defensive purposes is interesting (other allies of that superpower can't attack you), but it won't work if the player you're scared of isn't scared of anyone else, because he won't have a superpower ally at all and will be free to fight anyone. It would be more interesting if everyone had to pick a side, but under the rules that is actually an end of game condition.

I didn't play long enough to assess the implications of the varying endgame scoring, but it's an interesting idea to base it on war vs. peace.

On the face of it, this game seems like it should be interesting and fun - especially if you like games with negotiation and diplomacy. But somehow, it just never really gets off the ground. It has some excellent ideas, and many of the political and regional issues are appropriately abstracted, but it needs more refinement before it can make the transition from interesting simulation to a fun game. Better components would also help.

Clunky and basic, and seems prone to wild swings. It's extremely dependent on negotiation, so I'll compare it to Diplomacy:

In Diplomacy, it actually takes a fair amount of effort and time to really take someone out of the running, as well as cooperation. This encourages taking risks and making bold moves, both on the board and diplomatically, because it's actually low risk in the short term, especially the mechanics. The feeling in Diplomacy is of spheres of influence expanding and then bumping against each other, but rarely just wiping each other out. That gets the negotiations going, to make something really happen.

In Mid-East Peace you can be eliminated in one turn, potentially the first (if you aren't paying attention).

Ugly components, confusing rules. We only played once, a 2-player game; It finished dumbly in round 2. Maybe the game has some depth with more players, but we don't really care.

It was fun once, but I have long since moved on. I tried it again a couple of years ago, but, much like cartoons you used to watch as a kid and then watched again as an adult, I was left with that "hand-on-forhead 'what was I thinking back then'" feeling.

Had this game for ages, keep wanting to try it, but you slide the sleeve off with a shudder, and then open the cheap box, and..... groan. What were Columbia Games thinking?! Seen the reviews to say it can be a good multi-player game but it looks so awful, hideous, naff.... I've never been able to get the gaming crew to try it.

645/ With 1-6 players (6 is best),you can't actually believe that the goal of peace can be obtained because: (1)the game plays in a short time, (2) uses no dice, (3)you have to be a diplomat to create alliances, (4) you have to manage military strength if peace fails, (5) you need an oil supply in any outcome for negotiating strength. If you can balance all that, you should get a job w/ the Wallendas and their tightropes!
