What a fun game. Plays like a gambling game - playing the odds. I just *love* it when the pirate pays off. The bits are just gorgeous. A great game when you just don't have the stamina for El Grande or T&E.

Just played at Gen Con 05 for the 1st time. High risk high reward game. If you like to bet on things this is your game. Best new game that I have played in years. Must own.

This is now firmly entrenched as my current favorite light game - Manila has a finely tuned balance between gambling and planning, and I'm looking forward to a lot more occasions of either cursing the dice or congratulating myself for being clever enough to win ...
Played 10+ times.

Light and fun, yet engrossing and addictive. It gets especially intense near the end of the game when each player is battling to have his shares rise in value.

Gorgeous game, very attractive to newcomers--and easy to teach, to boot. Lots of fun to root on the boats, similar to the excitement at a craps table. Playing an accomplice as a pirate earns a hearty "yaarr!" As the game goes along, it can feel as if you're making no progress as bets fail and you show little profit from round to round. Bidding on the harbor master can really hurt your cash flow, but is critical for advancing your shares' worth. However, at the end, adding up your cash and shares proves quite profitable.

This game is more subtle than it looks. Dealing with dice and randomness is MUCH harder than deling with no such things...People who despise randomness in games should study random processes; that'll teach them right!

Wow. What a great game. Lots of interesting choices and decisions. Luck management, but still rewards good decisions. Deliciously wicked action at times. My only dislike was the arbitrary targeting of players (especially early in the game when folks are roughly equal in standing) by the pirate -- when you have to screw someone hard, for no apparent reason. It's hard to justify picking one player over another under those circumstances w/o resorting to metagame influences.

Nice components, simple rules, runs under an hour. This is a gem of risk management. Get it now, especially if you like economic games ... or not.

I can think of no good reason why this game is out of print. None. This game is the perfect, perfect, PERFECT gateway game for typical American gamers. It ties together something people inherently understand -- gambling -- with that worker placement mechanic that all the kids are talking about.

Screw Splendor. Manila is a monster.

So many things to like here with pretty unique and original mechanics throughout. Goes just a bit longer than I would have liked, though.

This one, with its dice/gambling mechanism, is refreshingly different to the other Euro games we own. It's a great mixture of luck and playing the odds. The 'weight' seems just right too - calculating the odds can be done mentally, but it isn't too easy. Play is very absorbing, and the time goes fast. Really nice bits too, especially those coins.

Very fun game. I think unexperienced players (which we were) can either extremly undervalue or overvalue the cost of the harbor master. Otherwise very very good game. I admit strategy is hit or miss because of the tactical nature of the game, but the mechanics are elegant and mix together beautifully. Nothing seems forced or unbalanced.

Wow. Love this game after one play. Don't think I'd ever get tired of it. It took me over six months to get to it, because I couldn't assimilate the rules, but if you're working with people who know how to play, it's nearly a non-issue.
Skilled players can calculate probabilities, plan for possibilities, claim opportunities, and still lose out to lousy dice rolls -- but your palms will be sweating all the way.

In the end, though, I knocked this down a full point. I don't mind push-your-luck games, but the sell-everything-to-dictate-cargo mentality is morbidly un-fun.

This game is great fun. It's heavy on the dice, but it's basically a betting game - the betting is meaningful to the theme, the bits are great, a laugh every time

Roulete style bets on some boats that are moved by dice. Look's like there is too much look on this, but there is NOT, a good strategy can win the game.
