(AH edition) Not only is this one of the best block wargames, but it's one of the best wargames period! The rules are straightforward and streamlined, the combination of strategic movement and tactical battles is extremely satisfying, and the game maintains a high level of tension and excitement throughout. This is truly a classic!

"Can he do it? Can the allies stop him? Set the clock back to 3am, Thursday June 15th, 1815 and see!"

An extremely fun and attractive wargame. The map is bound with excellent muted colors. The wooden block pieces are in bold red, blue and green which look spectacular on the board. The unit symbols and strengths are embossed in gold directly on the painted surface. I prefer this original set over the later busier map and pieces with stickers.

Gameplay is relatively simple - 4 pages of rules. The combat is CRT-less, a method of rolling dice equivalent to strength levels. Movement is point to point among the various towns with the road and bridge traffic limits factoring in heaviliy.

The hardest decisions and questions are the ones faced by real commanders: when to force march your troops for maximum effect - when and where to concentrate for the decisive battle - where is the enemy's main body? - can he concentrate in time?

In short, a brilliant combination of simplicity and and what feels like real command decisions.

The Gamma 2 edition has an important rule that later block games dont have: a unit that retreats from battle gets marked (usually with a penny) and CANNOT MOVE during the next turn.

Based upon the AH edition. I loved this game, and its quickness allowed my friends and I to play several times during one game night. The rules were a little cranky, and we never did feel we were playing the battle board (left, center, right) correctly. But who cares?

I purchased the AH version around 2000 and felt I got the right one. Later editions gave the French cavalry too much power. On par with 1812. Developed and sold by Columbia Games originally. The Allies have to play a great game to win.

You look at the rules, and think "this is supposed to be historical?"
And then you play -- and it works. Best of the light-rule block games, and a great feel for the operational and tactical problems of the times.
The first edition has half the units of the 2nd and 3rd editions, and has less flexibility and replay value.
The most recent update on the third edition rules is the best set for play.

I really like this game. It's a little less intuitive than the other Columbia games I've played, but it's quick, it's tense, and the tactical battles are an awesome element that needs to be included in more games.

This is one of my all time favs except the rules take a decade to decipher because they are missing some clarifications and errata is imposible to find. Epic!

I love this game, easy to learn, easy to play, and lots of fun. And one of the best parts is that one can play in an hour or so. This was my second Columbia block game purchase many years ago. Upgraded my rating based on 4th Edition. The revised art, slightly larger map, smaller number of blocks and terrain all add up to a better game. This classic is still one of my favorites.

My first true wargame which I bought while at college in Waterloo, just a mile north of the battlefield and I played a lot of this in lunchbreaks as it can be finished in under an hour. One of the very few wargames to successfully combine strategy and tactical systems as you manoeuvre blocks on the campaign map and fight out combat on battlesheets with three columns, a reserve and reinforcements. One player controls the French army and the other 1-2 players the Anglo-Dutch and Prussians. There are a variety of strategies, thanks to a free set up by both sides and the French decision as to advance on the left against Wellington, right against Blucher or straight done the middle.

The 2nd edition (published by Avalon Hill) is perhaps the best wargame I have ever owned. After 34 years, I still play it. In fact, I just played it 6 times in the last 3 weeks and it is as good as ever.

See my review here on BGG. Outstanding game of Napoleon's attempt to defeat the Prussian and Anglo-Allied armies in June of 1815. Chess like in the need to think ahead two moves and visualize how the Main Board might look at that point. Plays very quickly. Very easy to learn, but deep enough that it will challenge you to master the nuances of road movement, force concentration, and deception.

Columbia Games 4th Edition:

I can't stop playing this one! Best block game ever, extremely challenging, low block count, very very deep play!

I much prefer this game over all the previous version, and that says it all!

My favorite block game! Fun and thoughtful with interesting choices as there is limited movement and road capacity each turn. Great for 3 players.

Love the look of the AH version with painted blocks and muted colors on mounted board.

Plays moderately quick with potential for some lengthy play as battles get transfered to a battle board and these can take a bit to finish depending on # of units involved and d. rolls.

Interested in seeing what the new edition of the game adds to the fun. Glad they brought back the horse artillery!

This is the latest one and the best so far in both production values and gameplay. Mr Dalgleish has taken the game back to its roots whilst keeping the best mechanisms from its many iterations.

This game has blown me away. This is game design of a very high calibre. It is hard imagine a better war game. I can imagine folks liking this game. Then suddenly they "get" it! That is what happened to me. Wow! The game is magnificent and brilliant.

A terrific, fluid game with different problems on both sides. The block fog of war is used nicely. I love the point- to-point system and the tactical battles are a sub-game that is just as fun as the strategic game. I'd give it a 10 but the map is too small for the number of blocks in the 3rd edition.
