I've mostly played Scenario III, Teutoburger Wald and Scenario IV, Idistaviso, which have pretty much everything I look for in a game. Interesting problems for both players, limited intelligence (Romans don't know the German OOB or dispositions), playable at one sitting. The Romans and Germans must play very different games, both of which are intriguing. I'm interested in this historical period, and that coupled with the great game play makes this ideal for me.

Don't be scared away by the dull looks of this game. Once you get it right, its great!

Even though it looks like something from a previous millenium (not entirely incorrect!), the mechanism and the historical part makes it work in a great way. This is a game for the semi-amateur-historian. You can almost imagine the mighty roman legions marching across Gaul. splendid strategy card mechanism. I will hopefully play this a lot more in the future!

I've always enjoyed this game (when I can find someone to play it). I especially enjoyed the use of battle formation commands within the actual combat - it gives a sense of actual command (instead of just moving pieces and rolling the dice)

A hidden gem. Rules are presented in "Programmed Instruction" which make the first couple of scenarios rather dull. Once rules for hidden units and ambushes are introduced though, the game really shines. The opposing armies must be handled differently, as each has different strengths and weaknesses. The German tribes should almost never take on Roman Legions in the open, while the Romans need to avoid terrain such as woods to avod being ambushed. However, victory often requires taking these risks. Highly recommended if you can find a copy.

Solid game. Each side has their own strategy which must be mastered: the Romans play a game of decisive maneuver and massive force at point of attack; the Germans one of guerrilla war and delaying tactics. Scenario IV is probably the best, requiring upmost precision by both players.

The tactical card system added some sense of uncertainty to the combat results table.

Played this again (scenario 4) for the first time in years. The tactical cards can provide huge swings in combat results. I destroyed 2 legions separately in woods due to lucky card selection and die rolls.

An old game that I even made an ADC2 gameset for. Have only played some of the basic scenarios, some of the later ones look pretty cool. My interest in this era has waned as of late.

Multiple scenarios make this game eminently replayable. It's fun to watch the fewer, but highly trained Roman Legions march through hoardes of barbarians on the road to victory.

I probably like this game more than most as it covers an aspect of Roman history not often covered elsewhere. It actually has some good variety with ambushes, hidden movement, etc.

I always liked this game - not all the scenarios work very well, but the ones that do are fun and often tense right 'til the end. Haven't played it in years, but would like to try it again sometime.

I think this one is a bit underrated. This is an excellent game for those who appreciate asymmetrical forces. It uses the 1776 system, pretty much lifted directly, including the tactical cards. The first two scenarios are just for learning the game. Unlike most reviewers, my favorite, and that of everyone I've played the game with, is Scenario 3, which features the Romans not even knowing their victory conditions at the start of the game, with the Germans set up hidden. I remain convinced that the Roman player does have a chance to win this one, but I've never seen it happen.

"Varius, WHERE ARE MY LEGIONS?" Great game. Uses the tactical cards first developed in AH's 1776. Various scenarios offer a wide variety of battles between the Romans and the Gauls. It has been awhile since I played, but I remember some of them being quite exciting.

The Romans in Britain. Not a bad game, but not as good as Alesia. Uses the tactical cards that are used in 1776.

One of the first games I got that had scenarios rather than a set game. It took some getting used to, lucky it was quite a good game.

This game was a delight when I first got it over 30 years ago. The fog of war touches were highly original and several of the scenarios made for exciting play. Still play it occasionally - dated but worthwhile.

All'epoca lo snobbavo perchè troppo semplice per un wargame. Ora lo sto rivalutando. E' buono per chi si avvicina per la prima volta ad un wargame. Per i giocatori esperti risulta troppo banale.
