There's no reason to not use these tiles - they add options to the game without adding complexity or breaking the balance, as far as I can see.

Very nice. Adds a number of choices for (relatively) little money.

I always play with this kit, as I think the extra brown tiles open up the late-game. For U1 and U3 it's not that big a deal, but for U2 I think these tiles are almost mandatory. U2 has some pretty dense track, and this kit opens up options for the late-game considerably.

The green tiles created some interesting openings which hadn't been there otherwise. They are probably more useful on the more crowded U2 than the (very) open U1

These seemed useful for Unit 2. Haven't tried the game without these tiles, so it's hard to compare.

I have borrowed these tiles from one of my 1829 games. Generally, I think adding more tiles to 18xx games is a GOOD thing.

Mine is the version of this kit described as current, rather than the 'original' in the description note. Although, the sheet in mine says 1999 on the included 'rules' sheet.

One of my favorite green tiles is in here - the one with a tight curve and shallow curve originating from the same side, but going in opposite directions.

It was in the original 1829, and often useful.

In 1830 (or others) I used to forget that it was not part of the tile set, and would start a route intended to use it, only to find it was not there. After a few times of that, it is forcefully stored in my memory ;-)

Generally it seems that the more players, the more useful this is unless you want a tougher game that punishes early mistakes harder.

Opens the game out in very interesting and surprising ways. Changes the values and positions of companies.

I think these are especially useful when playing some of the combined games given how limited the tiles sets can be. Of course, that is only if you want to open up the placement. To some the tight placement is one of the charms of this series. I can't say I disagree. I don't think I would add these unless I was combining at least two of the base Units (and possibly some of the Regional Units as well). [03/13/2011]

Changes the character of the game to make it less about blocking / tile screwage and more about running your companies well.

I suspect the usefulness of this kit depends on the player count. With two players, you might not want to use it, as it reduces interaction. With four players used to the mainstream 18xx titles, you'll probably want to include these.

Most relevant for Unit 2 as that has the highest track density around Liverpool/Manchester. Kind of begs the question why this wasn't included with Unit 2 as standard, it's just a few track tiles after all.
