This is an excellent optional addition to 1825 Unit 2. It adds great additional game play elements to the game.

See 1825 Unit 2 and 1825 Unit 1 for further comments.

Includes:
2 minor companies
1 tile each: #69 (yellow), #15 (green), #119 (green & russet)

You should also use the 1825 K2 additional trains kit with this (or else 'borrow' the '3T' trains from 1825 Unit 3.

(My copy is with rules rev. Jan 2004.)

In general, I really like what the minor companies do for the game, adding a little bit of flexibility through the timing of when they start and the ability to set initial offering prices. But these two seem the least interesting of the various minors; they're too isolated and too hard to make work. I can see they'd be really cool with a U2/U3 combo game, but so far I have yet to play that.

I've tried these once. Furness ran well together with L&Y, North Staffordshire seemed completely useless.

As more of the shares are issued in parallel, Unit 2 is more inherently variable than Unit 1 so there's less need for Minor Companies to add variety to each playing. I still use these when playing Unit 2 with four, but both need the co-operation of nearby Majors in order to succeed. Using black for the Furness' station tokens was a poor choice, try to borrow bits in a neutral colour.

Unit 2 is claustrophobic from the get go. These can be useful, but thy are tricky.

The two minor companies are often thought to be mismatched, one being useful, the other mostly worthless. The problem is that which turns out to be which seems to vary by game. Like the regionals in Unit 1, these guys sweeten up the late and end game.

This is definitely something to be added to combined Unit games. I also think it is worth adding at some point to the single Unit 2 games as it gives you a few more options. [03/13/2011]

These are the least interesting additions to 1825. The Furness reserves a hexag which would otherwise be available to use. I'm glad I have this, but it is not my favorite.

Played twice. The NS saw a little play, but was easily blocked off by all the older companies around it. The Furness has to do a lot of work to get a good route, but in the one game where it succeeded, it was a very good company.

This kit is not essential for single-unit games, but both companies seem to become much more significant in multi-unit games (NS in 1+2, Furness in 2+3).

Odd for me to give this a 6 when the basic game gets only a 3, but these minors really add a sense of variable starts to the game, and definitely prevent the sleepwalk playing of many players

Two more companies in a format which can get you around the certificate limit. In order to use them you pretty much need to control the adjacent hexes, or lay supporting track early and hope you can get control of the minors when the time comes. Extends the game by 1 or 2 sets of ORs, which you might like or dislike. In any case, the stripy tile is awesome.

The Furness tokens duplicate the LNWR tokens in the base game, so you'll need to mark them in some way to use this kit. I stickered mine using the token stickers here on BGG.

Minor companies. They're just something else to go after instead of the major ones. Nice to pick up 4 or 2 shares on one certificate in place of a poor-performing major company's one share taking a precious certificate slot.
