It's like a bar fight with your creative thesbian club in high school.

Suprisingly excellent for the amount of decisions versus time of play. A Victorian Citadels, with strategic decisions, precision timing decisions, and the perfect amount of "fate" beyond your control, although a refined player will beign to understand his opponents choices.even good with 2, and fast like 30 minutes or so. Excellent game.
Finally a 10. Just so much going on, so strategic, so interactive, and so FUN!
Still so friggin good!

One of my favorite Euro's, it even breaks in to my top ten of all games. I like variable player powers and area control. The game seems to take many mechanics that have been done before and put them together in a way that I really like. Scoring could've been done a little cleaner with a score board.

I finally got to try M:RP and loved it. I'm a sucker for steampunk art/themes, so I was biased going in. But the game play was great, I like the combination of role selection and area control. We had already gamed for three hours so were playing with probably less strategy than we could've - but it was one of those games that have me chomping at the bit to try again.

Some that I have played this with are unhappy with the level of chaos, considering the short game. But the chaos to me is entirely consistent with the theme of rockets going to Mars - what could be more unpredictable than space travel! Plus, if you know the game, you can mitigate the risk and adjust strategy accordingly - for example focusing on the inner regions that are safer and not vulnerable to soldiers and discovery cards.

Upgraded to 10, I'd play this anytime. Just the right amount of chaos and strategy, perfect theme/mechanism mix, fast enough to play with newbies but meaty enough to play with (most) gamers.

OOP.

Great game. Area control combined with simultaneous role selection mechanic leads to more interactive play than most typical euros. Components are cool and durable and add to the 'theme' of the game. Rivals El Grande in gameplay at the top of the area control list.

Nice twist on a majority game, the theme is amazing, and the dynamic of the gameplay makes it a more aggressive and dynamic play than El Grande. Also, like lots of Bruno Faidutti games, it's kind of chaotic, which is a trait I like. The games are never boring...

There's nothing new here, it's just Citadels-style role selection with some area control and a cute steampunk Mars theme, but it's an incredibly satisfying amount of game. Unlike, say, Citadels, the duration, weight, and decision load are just perfect.

Bruno! Bruno! Bruno! This game Is FAST. In my mind that might be the downfall of it as it ends pretty quickly. I'm half expecting Asmodee to release an expansion "The other side of Mars" with a 2nd board and new characters/rocket destinations that will lengthen the game. At any rate that's just my musings (or wishes I dunno). The game as is is great! I love the treachery involved in some of the characters. I love that each players has the same characters. I love the Discovery card aspect. WOW Great GAME....thanks again Bruno!

Worst box insert ever though. Throw the insert out as soon as you open the box and things are fine.

UPDATE: This game is why I hate BGG sometimes. When this game released it didn't do well despite being a brilliant game. It's still to this day my favorite role selection game and I've owned it since it frist came out in 2005! I eagerly awaited getting this and loved it. Still perhaps due to being from Asmodee who was not as prominent then as they are now it got looked over. I talked to Bruno about the game several times over the years and he said resolutely that due to low/slow sales upon release there would never be an expansion for this game that I loved. SIGH

Then retailers have a hard time getting rid of it. I've seen it sell brand new from retailers for as low as $9.00 which is just stupid cheap. Now we fast forward to 2013 and it's finally unable to be had. Out of print and due to it taking years to sell off will not get a reprint and guess what? Everyone and their brother feel they need a copy of it and it's price is sky rocketing. $50-$70 for used copies plus shipping. Geesh. It's stupid.

My group has had a BLAST with this game for the 4 times we've played so far. LOVE the setting, the characters, the abilities, the production values and components. Just a really nice package. Rules are simple enough, basically 2 pages, but loads of great decisions to be made every turn, and some real long term strategies to be shifted around on multiple playings.

This little gem from Asmodee combines elements of an area control game with similar mechanics to Citadels in that each player must choose a character from their hand each turn and use the benefits of that character.

The game has 2 key phases. First the players must aim to get their astronoughts onto the spaceships that are waiting to launch. Once launched the astronoughts will reach a territory on Mars. Each scoring phase (3) will allow the player which controls each territory to gain the points offered by the mine present.

The inclusion of charcater abilities, secret mission cards and event cards help Misison: Red Planet climb to the level of quality game.

By the by the game is very attractive, right down to the box art.

Great theme, great game. As other ratings prove, this is surely not everybodys cup of tea, because there is indeed a lot of random. But for my personal taste, this game hits the sweet spot. In my gaming round, it was one of the top three games 2006.

Well, we have here a clever little game. The bits are truly wonderful, and the theme and artwork is TREMENDOUS. The amount of bits make the game feel a bit daunting, bit it really is quite simple. It has a little of all the things I like: attractive game, simple rules, not too long (just 10 turns!), some screwage. A lot of the game mechanics feel a little familiar, but oddly don't feel old or used.

It's a fun game for up to 5 people, and there's a feeling of theme throughout. The chaos factor doesn't bother me at all, nor the screwage potential. My wife--not a gamer--liked it a lot, right off the bat. I think it's just about a perfect contemporary board game, as it's easy to learn, plays quickly, gives players a lot to think about for choices, changes its factors for each game, and is neither too long nor too short. There's also even an aspect of screwage, but not overly so. The components are mixed, as the playing board has warped somewhat, and even the designer wrote that it was stupid of the game company to provide little round, colored, wooden pieces to represent 'astronauts.' But the other pieces have nice art and are sturdy, thick, coated cardboard.

Is this the best Faidutti game? I think so. With the help of Mr. Cathala they've managed to create something special. It's got role selection, and area control and hidden cards...It's so mean, yet so fast. It has chaos as well as predictability and control. It's damn near perfect. This game was shit on when it first came out. Too bad it didn't gain popularity until it was long OOP. A game that takes a bonafide classic (El Grande) and makes it into it's own classic. Well done.

Role selection/area control game with a great theme. Never plays too long and is always welcome on the table, shame the cards are weird, unsleevable sizes. Can be quite nasty and the Discovery cards try to shoehorn bluffing into a game too short to support it.

(edit) Apparently Fantasy Flight will be reprinting this one, which means we'll lose the excellent art in favour of more plastic pieces. At least it will be back in print!

I love to play citadels, but if given the chance between playing that or this, I would play Mission: Red Planet for sure. It does mix so many features I like and they blend so well together. I also feel strongly that the theme was pretty well put in the game, and the steampunk art really works for me. It feels like mixing Citadels and El Grande in a big package.
