Kicks Chess's butt in the strategy department. If you're just starting out, don't even THINK about playing on a full-sized board. Your brain WILL explode. Start with a 9x9 and work your way up from there. Yes, the learning curve is steeper than almost every game out there. It is worth it.

The greatest abstract game ever. Those who disagree either haven't played Go or are very weak players. And those who think Western Chess is greater, probably haven't played Shogi either

This is quite possibly the greatest game ever created. It is incredibly deep, very intense, wonderfully stylistic and well worth studying. It is a game, a conversation, and an art form all at once. Your thoughts and emotions are played out on the board and tested against your opponent's. The game is very intuitional and leaves great room for style in strategy, while providing a neverending well of interesting and deep puzzles and tactical problems to think about.

Those who complain about scoring are sadly using the somewhat broken Japanese scoring system. Chinese scoring is much easier to play and learn, and is equivalent when the Japanese does not break.

Go has a subtlety and depth that is redolant of eastern philosophy. It is all about balance and shape. Even though it is an abstract game it has a deeply human quality and there is something very sensual about the feel of the stones and the sound they make as they hit the board. If Chess is the king of board games then Go is the queen.

Perhaps the most elegant game made to date. Go is so simple, yet the level of depth is just mind-boggling. I wish I were good at this game, but for now, I will just have to settle for getting my butt kicked. They say you will play about 50 games before you get your first win.

Absolutely fantastic game. I can think of no other game as simple yet as complex as this one. You can enjoy it after a few minutes of learning the rules or you can take a whole life mastering the gameplay.

Overall, the quitessential board game. Easy to learn, difficult to master. I quit playing Chess when I learned how to play Go. The ultimate compliment to this game is that computer programmers have never been able to develop a program to beat masters of this game. Overall a very deep game that is easy to learn.

Simply the best abstract game of the world. Much nicer than chess.

My preferred game without any doubt. It is not only a game, it is a form of art.

I play Go only on a server, and I don't register the games on BGG, but it is by far the game I have most played.

Best and hardest game in the world. Its sheer simplicity (you can teach a child to play on a 9x9 board in two minutes) and beauty combined with mind-numbing possibilities puts it in a league of its own. Even better that chess.

The game for a lifetime in my opinion. Multiple sized boards allow games from 10 minutes to an hour with a sliding focus between tactics and strategy. Handicapping is natural and allows two players with very disparate playing levels to enjoy playing each other. Effectively infinite replayability. Tons of players and articles, especially online. Can be played with a sheet of paper and some coins.
