Very cool game , nice two-sided board , cards and pieces.

I really like the game system where everyone places his actions together (10 of them) and then bids for the play order.

The game reminds me a bit of A game of thrones which is also a cool game.

A beautiful game, both in production quality and execution. (I have never played Wallenstein, but I know this is a re-themed version of that game). I played half a 5-player game (30 mins rules explaination, 2 hours 15 mins to play one (of two) game years -- for a total of 2h45m) before we decided to call it (well, it was 2:30am by then), but I just love how everything plays out. Rating this a 9.5, but I think this game would easily make a 10 in my collection with more (and complete) plays.

Highly recommended.

Update: I've now played full 5-player and 3-player games. This is an excellent game and is now awarded a 10 rating from me. The 5-player game took around 4 hours. The 3-player took 3 hours. Just a great experience -- careful planning required at the beginning of each season. Knowing when not to attack is just as important as knowing when and where to attack. I've also learned to appreciate the "small reinforce/redeploy" action more, when it can be coordinated with a "battle" action.

This is a resource management game with a feudal Japanese war game theme. There are ten actions that can be performed each turn and players must limit each action to one province. This throttles back the overwhelm-your-opponent strategy I dislike in other dice-based wargames. Not to mention that this game doesn't use dice, but a randomizing tower in which armies go in and may come out or may stay behind for a later fight.

The game system, as far as I'm concerned, is Wallenstein perfected: I can't think of a more perfect game in the Risk-like conquest genre. You can't just plunder your competitors: you must FEED and GARRISON your territory just to protect it from your own citizens! More subtly, you must spread your holdings out to make the most points, penalizing those who content themselves with an invincible little corner of the board. Folks, it doesn't get any better than this! The only downside is that the cards and cubes like to slip and skid on the board, making it a bit tricky to handle.

I've only played with five so far and was great. The auctioning for special cards and turn order is a really good addition. Better bits than Wallenstein for sure.

Alright, here's the deal. SHOGUN is pretty much a more refined, slightly tweaked version of WALLENSTEIN. With that in mind, this game under either title is far and away the best of the "heavy" Euros and it is also the best Euro outside of the SETTLERS games. Much, of course, has been made of the combination of Euro-style mechanics and wargame elements and it's completely true- both are here, and the result is a compelling system that combines warfare, area control, economics, planning, and one of the most fun combat resolution systems since CRTs. It's a tough game- every round is full of really complex, difficult decisions that can make or break you and the ever-present specter of peasant revolts (which seem to happen more than in WALLENSTEIN) is a constant threat. As far as the differences, I'm not completely convinced that there's that much of a difference between these maps and the original- I wouldn't be surprised if an analysis showed that the number of territories and connections were very similar. The bidding for turn order is OK but really sort of superfluous aside from the special ability cards. The event cards are slightly different (better, I think) and the tower has a clear tray (very good idea). I liked the Thirty Years War theme of the original better, but SHOGUN doesn't fail to provide a credible sense of warring in Feudal Japan and a much better sense of graphic design and layout goes a long way to giving the game a very slight edge over its predecessor. As far as the length, I've seen people claiming that it's taken them 2.5-3 hours to get through half the game. What the f$%k you guys? This is a 2-2.5 hour long game. Sure, there's lots of decisions but unless you're a microanalyzer or play with them then you can easily knock this out in the time specified, particularly if you do simultaneous building and revenue collection. At the end of the day, SHOGUN (or WALLENSTEIN) is a better, more exciting game than PUERTO RICO, CAYLUS, or any of the other favored heavy Euros and it has a lot that will appeal to gamers like me who want something with a little teeth. Completely essential for anyone looking for an accessible multiplayer wargame. This was my 500th rating, and a great one to mark that milestone.

One of my personal favorites. It's a very tense game throughout and you'll have lots of agonizing decisions to make. You have to weight getting the resources you need over risking revolts or working highly contested territories. It's not so much a war game as an area control and resource management game, but war certainly can factor in. Plus the cube tower is just too darn cool.

Actually I think this is better then Wallenstine. IT's basically the same game with a makeover. There are a few things that I think rank it above Wallenstine though. First is the fact that the Japanese background and province names are more appealing and easier to pronounce then the German Originals. The fact the rules are in 6 different languages can't be overlooked. The biggest advantate though is the fact the board is two sided. Adding twice as much re-play value as the original. This is an amazing game, an a great cross between resource management and risk (or insert other generic military game with only one unit type) style war.

Simply put: I love, love, love this game. It's not a wargame but it's really more Euro in wargame clothing but I enjoy how everything meshes together,Great with 4 or 5 players.

Plus it has the cube tower. I mean come on.

Love the cube tower! Love the uncertainty of victory. Love the multiple decisions that have to be made. Love preparing for revolts. Love the theme. Love stealing buildings from my opponents during the fall. Love a two-sided gameboard. Love a game that doesn't last forever. Love it! Give it a 10! [Birthday gift]

A true masterpiece. The genius of this design is in how Dirk Henn packed in so much great randomness and chaos without the game spinning out of control. The balancing mechanisms are clever and organic. The cube tower hurts now, but helps later. Take too many provinces and you suffer in the winter grain revolts. Every season offers so many great decisions and trade offs to ponder, as you must always consider your opponents' likely actions alongside your own.

I have only played the original Wallenstein on Spielbyweb, but I think the bidding for turn order and special powers, and the new seasonal events are a great improvement. I like the new map as well, even though it is a little easier to get isolated, isolation is often not a great advantage.
