Not as simple as that .
My first game ever . The 10 goes for the amazing times I spent playing it as a child .
Otherwise maybe I'd give it a 6 .

One of my favorite games, and is a true classic. This is probably the game I have played the most in my life, and definetly the game I played the most as a child with my dad and grandfather who were deadly at this game. This game can be bought anywhere for a low investment, and is a great two person game. It is an abstract game, so skill alone will determine the winner, but this game doesn't require the intensity of Chess.

I don't know why this game is ranked so low on BGG. It doesn't take a long time to play or set up. The rules are simple to learn. It is cheap. You can buy plastic pieces if you love Ameritrash, or you can buy wooden pieces if you like Euros.

It must be played by the rules; IE: Compulsory jumps. Two expert Checkers players will result in a draw more than Chess, but how many times are you going to be playing an expert Checkers player?

My favorite move is the double jump, to King Me!

A Classic so a "10" in my book.

This game reminds me of my childhood. My grandpa made all of his grandchildren play him in this game (and there were a lot of us) when we went to visit him on weekends and he always played to win. Absolutely no mercy no matter your age. He also played that you had to "jump" which looking back now maybe was an advantage for him because I don't know anyone else that enfores this rule so he is seasoned in playing this version of Checkers. To be honest, I don't even know if "forced jumping" is a rule.

Checkers is a simple game yet one I have never mastered. In fact, I just played my grandpa who turned 90 years old this year and guess what - I lost again. I thought for sure at our advanced ages I could finally take him but nothing has changed since I was a kid. Well actually a lot has changed but not when in comes to our game of Checkers.

A big fan of this game as it reminds me of my childhood and of Sunday afternoons with grandpa and the rest of my extended family.

I think it is much underrated because people play it naively or with incorrect rules.
Though very drawish, checkers played at tournament level has great depth and surprising tactical blows.

The international version is even more interesting.

How anyone can rate this game lower than 7 is beyond me. Sure, chess has more variation in terms of moves and strategy, but draughts is just as challenging. Anyone who claims otherwise is either playing the game incorrectly or just thinks that simplicity equates to unchallenging.

Usually play this on a 10 by 10 (European?) board. There is a lot more to this game than the meager rating suggests. Granted, it is not chess or go, but it is a very good abstract, with very few rules. The 9 rating is absolutely not a shill.

Lightweight (in comparison to chess) but deep and satysfying. Easy to learn, hard to master. One of my favorites.

But since there are so many modern board games there is not much time left for the good old checkers...

I was inspired to learn Checkers properly after reading Jonathan Shaeffer's book - 'One Jump Ahead: Computer Perfection at Checkers'.

Marion Tinsley, what a man!

I ended up buying the American Checker Federation numbered board and solid red and white pieces along with the 156-opening three move card deck. I also bought a complimentary small boxed magnetic board. To put these all to good use and get me started, I bought the recommended 'How to Win at Checkers' by Fred Reinfeld to lift me from learner to beginner.

Without commentaries, it is a classic.

First one of the books in Spain where they gather information on the "Damas" (checkers): "El Ingenio, o juego de molino de punta o damas" (Antonio de Torquemada - 1597).

We play a variant different from the American/English and the International one.

A great game. Anybody who doubts this statement should try it again, ensuring they use the 'huffing' (enforced takes) rule. There a lot of depth to the game and much subtlety. I particularly like the way you almost always have to sacrifice one of your own pieces to force your opponent into a bad situation meaning you risk losing a piece for nothing if you have miscalculated.

Most people rate this low because they are playing the simple kid's version. When the captures become mandatory, it's a whole other game -- with no room for an error of any kind. Try the Polish draughts variation (played on a 10x10) for a really deep abstract game.

I really like this game - mainly because it's really easy to play and learn. When I played and drastically lost this game recently, I decided to train myself in it, which allowed me to find that there is more strategy in it that I initially thought. While the game is ultimately solvable, I still enjoy it.

My wife and I play checkers (and its variants) fairly often. A very aggressive variant that my wife introduced to me is that you are allowed to jump your own piece or pieces without capture as a way to quickly get across the board, to capture another piece, or to advance as a double wall in one direction.

A classic game with significantly more depth than its given credit for. Really a shame that it's so lowly regarded on BGG. Solved in the weak sense--we know that perfect play will lead to a draw. Fortunately, perfect players are not too common.

I'm a fan of combinatorial games and usually pretty good at them, but for whatever reason, checkers seems to stump me. I often lose to even casual players.

One of my favorite gaming figures is Marion Tinsley, by far the greatest checkers player ever. Most famously, he renounced his World Champion title to play the upstart Chinook computer program. He beat it 4-2 with 33 draws. The two losses were two of only seven in his entire career. Chinook now plays optimally, but it never won a match against Marion Tinsley!

I don't get the bad rating. If you're playing with official rules, there is a lot of strategy involved. Great, classic game. Plus, there are so many variation that can be played on the board (fox and hounds, kings corners, Chinese checkers, etc).
