There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

Post-apocalyptic Ameritrash Mexican-Standoff Chess.

Loved the post-apocalyptic theme and back story. This is a hex-based spatial battle game with an appealing mix of strategy and tactics, randomness and careful planning, which feels very thematic. Each army is asymmetric, so it's fun to discover the strengths and weaknesses of your particular army. It's got an interesting rhythm of "pulses" of bloody battles throughout the game. We played with 4; because it's kind of chess-like, I think it probably would play best with 2, due to downtime.

Note: 3rd ed. has solo variant!!!

UPDATE: having tried the Android App, 2-player against AI, it plays much better 2-player. Upgrading from 8.5 to 9.5. Awesome game!

This is a must have game for any lovers of strategy games! This game is complete awesomeness!!! I am suprised that it didnt get a rating of like 8 or 8.5 or higher. People in my game group love this game and constantly ask for it so we can play it. I this this game is one of the most popular games played in my game group.

I recommend buying this game and playing it!

Only played app version, but this is an amazing abstract tactical shoot'em up. Factions feel very different and give the game theme. Having combat as a tile is genius.

A fantastic abstract strategy game disguised as a war game. I have only played with two players; I can see how the game could become quite chaotic with addition of more players (though probably still fun).

It plays like a more controllable, tactical, streamlined variation of Nexus Ops.

This is a fantastic tactical combat game. Since the units that become available are random, this game rewards short-term tactics over long-term strategy, which is refreshing. It's all about action and reaction until someone starts the battle, and half the field is wiped out. Each army has unique and interesting units and feels significantly different from the others, so there is a good amount of replayability here as well.

This is a really great little game. Whoever described it as nexus ops advanced was right on the money. It has a little more meat on its bones than nexus ops. Our first game was slightly prone to analysis paralysis but I think as you learn the rules better there won't be so much agonizing as to where each tile is placed. If this had been themed as a star trek ship battle game, it would probably be somewhere in the top 50 right now. I like the theme it has, and the game has a number of interesting mechanics and variables. The decision making is gut wrenching and you will be second guessing yourself a good bit. Great little game, and the rating might rise with more plays. VERY rich game for its short length!

If I gave a rating to the published system as a whole, through the Dancer, it would be a "9".

A quick strategy wargame -- a knife-fight in a phone booth. Alex and Vince own this game.

Each player gets an army with strengths and weaknesses, and they must place their units on a small board. The "execute" tile allows the fighting to commence -- the order of attacks matters a lot.

Played this for the first time in Aug. 2009. I've wanted to try it for a very long time, but the timing just didn't work out till now. I enjoyed it.

We played twice. So this rating and reaction isn't locked in yet.

The first game was a 4 player game and we got some big rules wrong. We worked them out as we played forward, a bit messy, but it worked. I won. The rules we learned in the play (now that we have them right) make a huge difference.

The 2 player game that followed was with Dan. I pounded him in this go. It was a slaughter, but it was fun. I'd definetly play it again and each exposure would make you better at it.

What to think of the game?

I enjoyed it over all.

It had the feel of a collectible miniature's battle game (like Warcraft) without the collectability.

There is a lot of tactical play with the tile draws, but there is also real strategy in knowing your troop count, abilities, and where you position and plan. I seemed to grok it very well and quickly.

I seemed to really enjoy it actually. I'll have to pick it up I think.

I'm concerned a bit with the tile draws being to impactful to play, but it didn't actually bother me in the playing even when I drew poorly, but it could kill you if your HQ gets pounded down before you get units on the board.

In the four player game, I could tell Kevin was going to come back as he had many units still undrawn and the end game would be close. He didn't see that at first and thought he was getting pounded, but his HQ had not taken enough damage to drive it down.

I won that game by one point. It was a good rebuild for Kevin and with Dan and him coming at me, it ended up being a good fight (Adrian got pasted early, but it was due to the missed rules and not his fault).

I like the no luck combat, the various phases of initiative and the bonus tiles.

The iconography, much like Race for the Galaxy, works, but takes a bit to learn. Once you learn it, it seems straight forward.

I am not a big fan of sci-fi settings in general, be it in movies, books or games. There are no many sci-fi films I like and those I do like are masterpieces and there cannot be an argument regarding their quality really (Alien, 2001, Star Wars etc.). When it comes to games, the same applies. Neuroshima Hex bears a post-apocalyptic sci-fi / mad max earth setting and despite the good execution and love for detail in creating the theme kit does not do anything for me. The game however is great and I like the mixture of puzzling and drawing luck, because a game without random mechanics usually does not appeal. The different "races" or "factions" are diverse enough to make the game interesting over a long course of time, however, I found that those differences, while they are definitely in place, are not that evident and apparent during gameplay which is a shame because it would have been nice for those subtle difference to have a bigger, observable impact on the game.
