The original. One of the best tactical games ever released. Not based on reality arguments, as a game it is fantastic.

I can see why this one is a classic with a devoted following. It is very accessible, very playable, and fun. Lots of nice variants, fan sites, and old articles to sift through. Cool stuff online from old soldier, imaginative strategist, etc.

That Wargamer's Guide is pretty sweet indeed, as is the Boardgamer's issue. The BPV DYO charts by Byron Henderson are pretty awesome. LEGS. Can even be retrofitted with some of the PL or AIW rules if that's your style, though it's not really necessary.

Another nice thing is that there has been 45 years worth of rules clarifications and FAQ, so if you're learning the game, chances are someone has already ironed out an answer to your question.

There are modern platoon scale games that have supplanted PB for many people, but the rules simplicity and capabilities of the original game should not be underestimated. Not to mention I find it more aesthetically pleasing than many modern designs.

A 10 due to it being my first wargame. And, it was a great game for its time. I wonder how many wargamers started with this gem.

An exciting original.

This groundbreaking and enduringly playable game is an inflection point of the art. The '10' rating is not a statement of modernity; rather, is the game worth playing and if so how much? The game is every bit as enjoyable as when it smelled like fresh ink, hot oil, and cordite.

It moves along and bookkeeping is slight. You don't have to keep track of loss factors, supply, or command.

Does PanzerBlitz give a flavor for armored tactical combat? After the German has exhausted his scarce infantry and the Russian presses resolutely past a litter of his own burning wrecks, is the proper time to ask.

The bottom line is, it's fun.

First tactical wargame I ever played. Quite dated by today's standard, but I think that any player's journey into tactical wargames should begin with the game that created the genre and set the standards by which all games are measured now.

Additionally, the rules are very simple and straightforward, making it very attractive for beginners.

Its I-go-you-go mechanism has a chess-like feeling that I love, and that requires you to think lots of moves ahead. Great for tactical thinking!

Its flaws (panzerbush syndrom, lack of opportunity fire, scenario imbalances) have been overstated, although some reburbishing can be made by using some optional rules available in the BGG.

This game is just so iconic. This game is the Beatles of war gaming. It's hard to imagine what gaming was like before it and it's influenced in the genre it created can still be felt. And as a game it still shines. This game still plays beautifully today. It is a solid and fun game that doesn't get bogged down in fiddy rules.

A copy of this classic can easily be purchased on eBay for a very reasonable price (along with its younger sibling Panzer Leader). I even found a never played unpunched copy.

I am very disappointed with the reboot of this game. If you are looking for a more modern game covering similar scope and size I highly recommend Lock 'N Load's White Star Rising.

This is a great war game for newbies. It introduces a fairly simple rule set and it can be played in a relatively short period of time compared to some war games. I will introduce my kids to wargaming with this game when they are 11 or 12

This is the game that got me into wargaming in the first place (and which has periodically kept me in). It may not suit the needs of the grognards out there, but it is playable and set in a very satisfying ~platoon per unit scale.

I would always be willing to play this game with almost anyone. Perhaps I'm biased because it's the first boardgame I ever learned how to play (yes, before Monopoly, and no, I never learned how to play Candy Land), but I will never get tired of it.

Owned and played since mid 1970's and I still play it periodically. I especially like the Imaginative Strategist counters and maps. Better games exist, but since I own this already and with the cost of games today, and the fact it is still fun, I will continue to play it.

This was the first wargame I got in 1982 for Xmas after pestering my parents to buy it. I played this extensively with my father, my friends and anyone who cared to play as a teenager and as an adult, yes this game has been superseeded but with the complexity of many games these days it is virtually beer and pretzel wargaming. I still have the battered box faded worn pieces (still all there)and tattered charts and sticky taped annotated rules.

I am voting this high as this game is solely responsible for my passion for wargaming and for that it deserves a 9.

Might be considered too simple these days, but what a blast back in the day. This is where the whole multi scenario, modular board trend started. VERY wide variety of units, plenty of scenarios came after as well. Easy to play via snail mail as well.

Own multiple copies and most everything published on this one. I still play this regularly over Vassal PBEM. Fun and fast and I've yet to feel the urge for more depth (aka Panzer Leader, AIW).
The scenarios in the box aren't all that great though - highly recommend General and Boardgamer Gamer's Guides for new recruits.

This was the game that started it all for me. My first advanced game bought with paper route money. It was about $7 as I recall and it was bought at a Target-type store way before there was even a Wal-Mart. Had a very difficult time finding opponents but definitely played more of this than anything else. Good scale, lots of variation in scenarios, and victory conditions meant you didn't have to wipe out the enemy to win.
