Not really a boardgame, but this is the most popular game in Mexico, by far, and I like it a lot. However, I only like the "hard" version: four players, by couples, 7 tiles each, no draw tiles. The fact that is almost impossible to win against a couple that plays much better than you proves that this is a game of skill.

I have double 12, 15 and 18 sets with colored dots and they are all great! We usually play German style double 12/All Sevens, which takes approximately 45 minutes. But you should also try the more time absorbing double 15/All Nines or double 18/All Elevens. These games are all very strategic, superb for three players and very good for four or five players also.

Check out the rules at http://www.dominospiel.de (German) or http://www.dominoz.tk (Norwegian).

If there is an universal language it would be mathematics, and if there is a universal mathematic game that would be dominoes. It's like God's voice. Dominoes is not a game of luck and matching tiles, it is a game of bluff, partnership and skill. Players know their hands and with that information, and the bones that other players play, specially their partners', they have to deduce who has what and when to play what they have. The keys of the game are the three r's: respect, remember and repeat. Respect: Do so if your partner is the leader. Don't play for yourself, play for him/her. You know which bones are the ones that you like, but that isn't the point. The point is to figure which bones your partner would like. If you want to steal the hand from him/her do so, but in such a case you'll have to win. Respect also if you are the leader of your team. Respect the bones that you have played, your game, and don't change your mind every time you put one in the table. Remember: Not only what you've played, but who and when played what. Only that way you'll be able to figure out who has what and play in consequence. Repeat: Your leading bone talks a lot about your game. Repeat those numbers even if you have no more of them. It's hard to explain this briefly, but it has a math explanation that proves your winning chances improves this way. There are a lot of tips an curiosities about dominoes, but I'm sure this is not the place to talk about them. Just keep the idea of this game as it is, the best and simpliest game that have ever seen the sun.

Probably one of the most undervalued and least appreciated games around (likely due to ignorance and prejudicial childhood memories of the standard block game) or actually, never learning how to play at all. Pick up a good set of colored pip, double nines or twelves and you have a whole closet full of fun tile games! Mexican Train and Wildfire aside. Just kidding, Mexican Train isn't too bad, with a tall glass of tequila.

I like dominoes. I like them a lot. I like to line them up and knock them over. I also like playing games with them. I have a ton of games to choose from. I like the sheer number of options availible to me, as you can pretty much do whatever you want and the game will still work. I like how they are great for a light and nearly mindless game, yet can also be used for games of intense strategic depth. I like the look and feal of dominoes, and it is a joy to play with them. I like how they shuffle and how they are moved around and how they are put on the table. Simply put, I like dominoes.

extremely versatile and conducive to making your own games up- when the family gets together there will be one person whining because no one else wants to play settlers of catan with him - everyone else is playing mexican train!

I own 7 sets:
1. Double twelve with colour dots. I believe I bought it new for about $15, or maybe received it as a gift. This is my nicest set. I bought some multi-coloured train engines at a farmer's market in Palm Springs in 2008, so they are in with this set. Mexican Train is my favourite dominoes game, although I enjoy all variants.
2. Double-six dominoes with teakwood scorer. For a shorter game. I believe I received that as a gift.
3. Double-nine dominoes, in a black case. Likely paid $2.
(I would love to own a double-fifteen set with coloured dots some day!)
4. Wooden Animal Dominoes, double-six dominoes. We have had these since Daniel was very young.
5, 6. Double-six black wooden dominoes in wooden boxes. Small sets.

My favourite Dominoes game to play right now is double-six Block with partners. It's a lot like Kaiser. Draw 7 each, take turns leading, pass or play, the team that goes out gets all of the remaining points (one per pip), race to 100.

Playing certain versions of the rules makes dominoes one of my favourite games and it's a fantastic pub game: my dominoes are beer-proof, compact for transport (along with a cribbage board) and don't take up too much table space to play.

This is a game I grew up with. My uncles played this and to be included in their group was a rite of passage. I play the Puerto Rican version, but have also played other versions where you try to get fives, or multiples of five on the open ends and the spinners. It is simple, elegant, and highly portable. Because it is a part of my upbringing and culture and a game which I am always ready to play I rate it higher than most. Have played it way more than my listed plays.

My favorite prison game.
Among my friends that like to play the old school parlor games like spades and poker, Dominoes are a favorite. There is something about the tactile experience, or perhaps it harkens back to images of old men playing 'bones' in front of a gas station...

A good set of bones goes a long way. Bakelite with just black pips are my favorite... I dislike the oreo-looking wooden ones...

Double-nine FTW! Why are good double-nine dominoes so hard to find???

I was just re-introduced to dominoes with my wife's family a year ago. This game can be a blast to play. Put on some Sinatra, have a drink, a few snacks, and away you go. What more do you need?

Can't diss the other staple from the distaff side of the family. We have too many copies of dominoes to count, and I could not begin to guess at the number of manufacturers in the stable. Whichever version we can find ordinarily makes an appearance on the holidays.

I was only introduced to Dominoes a few months ago when I moved to Austin, TX. I play All-Fives (and am interested in learning Texas 42). I was surprised at the depth and the strategy and have played dozens and dozens of games without getting bored. Scores point for simplicity, as well, which has made it easy to recruit new players. Plus, my girlfriend loves it!

Just got some equipment to try out Latin Partnership Dominoes which looks interesting. I purchased -

1. Double Six Fine Quality Imperial Dominoes
2. Double Six Jumbo Dominoes Black Case/Ivory Tiles
3. Bene Casa Wooden Domino Holders

and two books...

How to Play Better Dominoes - by Miguel Lugo

I love games that you can study. This really requires you and your partner to be on the same level. Great game.

Dominoes are just as flexible as a deck of cards in the games you can play with them. Why this site ranks them so low is beyond me.

I don't think enough people have either really played dominoes or played more than very simple block games with them.
