This can be played with 3 or 5, but I think that upsets the "balance". Some would argue that 4 isn't balanced, but I have seen all 4 starts win.

If you haven't played the 3 or 4 games it takes to get into this, you really are missing out on something great. This really is one of the best games around, and if you haven't you should check out the PBEM community. It works great.

Wonderful game that requires exactly four player (There are rules for 3 and 5 players but it is not nearly as fun). I'd say 3 hours is a little optimistic, 4-5 hours is more like it.

You need to invest several sessions in this game to learn the basics, preferrably four, one with each colour. But if you have the patience to learn it, the payback is enormous. I've probably played like 50 sessions of 4 hours each, and it is still my favourite. The history lesson is awesome.

The new version by Fantasy Flight games has to be commended as being the most perfect edition up to date. For the first time the rules really get it right, and the (minor) tweaks by Mr. Pulsipher really shine and make the game seem fresh even for veteran players like me. The board and the counters are of top quality as well, although the VP's as "change" doesn't really work, but nobody is kept from simply writing the scores down as it was done before. Yes, there is dice rolling, yes, the events are scripted, but there is also lots of strategy involved, and the more skilled player who plans ahead and saves his men for the really important battles usually wins. "Ancient Conquest" might have come first, but it is to the credit of Lew Pulsipher that we have a great classic "simple" wargame with immense flair that is still enjoyable after all these years.

I come back to play this game as often i can the last 15 years. I have to buy the second edition now because i want to try the new rules and since my old gameset has started to wear out of to much playing.
Absolutely the best game i have played with no competition.

Britannia is one of the best four player games out there. You might have to play about five games to realise this however. PBEM goes at a glacial pace... but can also be excellent fun. Ken's BBR surpises sometimes with its results!

A game that's ridiculously long and definitely not for everyone, and yet I love it anyway. There's something about the dynamics of this game that just 'make' it for me. I'd probably rate it a 10 in how often I'd be willing to play it, but practicalities of time and the learning curve of the game make it impossible to play as much as I'd like, which therefore frustrates me and therefore lowers my rating.
Edit: Nevermind. It's a 10 anyway.

On an anvil of blood and terror they forged the destiny of an island!

That has to be the coolest boardgame tagline ever! Wished they keeped it in the new FFG version (which is the one that I have). I like this game's theme. A lot. The gameplay is fun, not too complicated (though it has a lot of exceptions), and it's really interesting to play the different people that enter and leave play at different moments.

***UPDATE***
After quite a few games, this one has really grown on me. There is no doubt this is my favorite "wargame". There seems to be so many different strategies, and each game is different and fun. My rating is now a "9".

***UPDATE***
Let's be real here. I am ever gonna turn down a game of Brit? Nahhh. 10!!!

Great "sweep-of-history", I liked HotW but I really like this one. The combination of history and simple basic rules (yes, there are many secundary rules, I know) is nice. Despite the default set-up there's great diversity in the unfolding of the game play.

This is the four player strategy game, especially for a steady group willing to play it over time. Strategies will develop and there will be a migration of 'this color always wins' belief through Yellow/Blue/Red/Green and around again.

Superb game, not a single game is the same even hough it "should" be.

The only drawbacks:
Knowing/memorizing the province names.
The memorizing/knowing of who/what comes next turn what provinces do they want.
Takes a lot of extra time unless you have at least 2 people counting scores and that you have german efficient dicerolling procedures ie attacker rolls defence and offencedices. With 200+ dicerolls its a pain to watch people waiting for the attackers dices to fall before rolling their own thus wasting 3-4 s for every roll that adds up to like 30 min of wasted time.

Very intense game. Huge strategic elements and constant involvement in the game even when its not your turn. Intricately balanced. The unique flow and great historical attention to detail plus the simple and elegant combat and staggered entry of troops makes this a game I love to play over and over. The rules are a bit vague. One of my top 3 games.

Awesome light war game. I love the ebb and flow for each player as their nations come into play. It's a fairly scripted game as nations come in at specific times but there's enough room to experiment and enough incentive to push yourself to get the hard-to-earn points that I don't think any two games will play exactly the same.

EDIT: Yep, it's a 10.

My favorite 4 player game of all time. Extremely rich theme with a great game system. The player plays not 1 but 4 or 5 different powers who rise and decline during the course of the game. The situations change and evolve for the player as the game goes on. Thus they may start by fending off Roman invasion but then in the middle of the game start raiding the Scottish Coast to only end up fighting the Saxons for control of Southern England towards the end.

In terms of the new Fantasy Flight edition, it's very much the same game as the original with only a few tweeks here and there. The components are fantastic with one of the nicest quality mapboards I've ever seen for a game.

Romans, Saxons, Normans, Norsemen, Dubliners, Danes, Picts, Scots and so on. All the people I played with loved the game. Easy rules, lots of strategies for all the different invaders. Great fun to play and one of my most beautyful games. Great gamemap that deserves that name (Greetings to GMT!!! They make great games but pityful gamemaps) and due to the many waves of invasions that hit the isle all the players get to have a "high time" sooner or later. Luck is not on my side in this game, but just for the great map and styling Fantasy Flight Games deserves a medal. If you dont have it then for God's sake buy it! Also have the old Avalon Hill version of the game but map and counters are most boring.
