The monster in a rulebook of all WWII Boardgames. Alot like golf, if you start, your life will never be the same. Also most players of this game like to drink beer.

This is the game of WWII small infantry combat. Daunting to some because of the rulebook and cost, but it is worth the investment. The rules are more common sense than it appears. The rule around here is "if I can do it in real life, there's a way to do it in ASL".

What can I say? Any game where your commisars might kill your own insubordinate soldiers or that you can win by collapsing a bridge with a heavy tank to keep your opponent away from the victory objective is fun and fascinating as far as I'm concerned. Did I mention that I'm not very good at the game? Well, I like it anyway.

Greatest game/religion ever. Unfortunately, time and social life factors render it unplayable. I own an unpunched set and plan to set aside a decade of my retirement years to playing it... if I can still find an opponent in 2035.

A great game which was essentially the only game I played for more than a decade in the late 80s/early 90s. If you're serious about it, it tends to be consuming. Awesome bang for the buck in terms of the variety of game experience you can have, it's just that it's a lot of bucks (both in terms of time and money).

UPDATE Aug '08: I still feel that ASL is the best wargame ever made. If I'm ever stranded on a desert island, someone please airdrop this game to me and I'll be happy. However, I just don't play it much any more. Again, I still stand by my comment that it is possible to play ASL and other games. It's just that my "other games" right now include monsters like Case Blue and Devil's Cauldron. I don't have time for Tiddly Winks, let alone ASL.

Best wargame ever. And not just by a bit - by a long shot. I get surprised when people say things like, "It's a way of life." Or "It's the only game you can ever play if you want to play it." I play lots of other games. In fact, other games seem pretty easy to learn after playing ASL!!

Super-detailed tactical simulation. I'll never learn it all, and I'll never find someone who lives next door that is willing to play every week.

After I took the plunge (it took me about a year to decide to make the leap from SL to ASL) it took me a decade and a half to collect all the modules (and I am still at least 5 behind). I knew it would be a life commitment and I have never been sorry. I have played people from California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Tennessee, Alabama and Hawaii (and probably some other states, too). It's my favorite game even though I have a large collection (well, maybe not large to collectors) and play many other games, too (including those one-dimensional woodblock & tile Euro-elite games).

Max players based on bigger campaigns; I really like the Red Barricades campaign, along with other scenarios. Perhaps the only thing that I don't like is the "invariability" of the mapboards, which can lead to knowing what can see where by memorization.

Greatest of all wargames. Because it is also the most complex and rules-laden of all wargames, opponent's are scarce. Let me know if you want to play this game. I am willing to train, but I can't pay you a salary.

Too big for a little man ! You can't carry this game whithout a big truck...
But when you have understood the numerous basic rules, and played several scenaries, you can enjoy it for life. For retired people...

Love this game. One of the finnest simulations on WWII tactics. Expensive and hard to learn, but well worth it. It covers all facet of WWII tactical battles - everything. Look at the sheer amount of work being put into the game. No wonder it is called the King of wargames. It is a hobby into itself and if you are into it, it can be the only thing you play for years, since there are so many scenarios, fanzines and continuous production of products that your money and time can be sucked into it forever and ever. People often complain the complexity of the rules, but I can say it is not very complicated. The main mechanic of the rules lie in the phases of a turn, if you get it down (by playing a lot off course) then it is basically a fairly complex game. Since not all rules are used. There are ways to teach it. Plus MMP is producing a introduction to ASL which will be avialable soon...

This is THE game. It is a very realistic simulation of WWII combat and a great game. It is simple to learn and intuitive to play and you can have both short, quick scenarios and monster campaigns. What is there not to like?

Just can't get any better than the Grand Daddy of wargames and with the introduction of the starter kits you no longer have to dive into the massive rules system or buy all the modules to get started. If you have the time and patience and enjoy wargames, this is by far the best there is.

An incredibly absorbing game that, if you are so disposed, can provide you with an enormously rewarding journey. It can take years to become even competent at ASL, depending on your frequency of play and how willing you are to absorb the rules, but is surprisingly simple in many ways and so it is quite possible to play quickly. Addictive beyond compare, fascinating, exciting, colorful, and heartbreaking all at the same time, with unlimited replay value; in short, everything a great wargame should be.
