The definition of what worker placement games should be like.Excellent variability of actions, lots of different events. With the expansion it gets even more diverse.

Excellent resource management game that's not too much of a brain burner as other games can become in the same genre. The only reason I don't score it a 10 is because the random drawing of the master builders feels frustrating and can arbitarily swing a game (and there's only minor tactics to employ to influence the random draws, i.e. being start player and opting to redraw).

Caylus-lite isn't too bad a description of this. It's a decent game, with the usual "I need more money, workers, actions" problems...
Rating increased based on additional plays - this is a decent game.

Its roots are clearly in other porducts, but I'm not complaining, it is a beautifully produced product.

Worker placement and resource management. Yummy. Random cards and events keep the game fresh and fun and there is some blocking involved as well - especially if only one of a particular resource card comes out for purchase. In only one of my plays, was there a feeling like I was out of the game, and that's something I like. This one is available for play on Brettspielwelt, where it is very fun. I like Pillars of Earth very much, but it sometimes feels to me like it is missing something. I can't put my finger on it. I think it could be that sometimes the last round is anti-climactic as you can sometimes know who is going to win. Despite the fact that it's an enjoyable game, I have a feeling that I will enjoy World Without End even more if I get around to playing it. Could it be because it feels like there are tougher choices? Perhaps.

First time playing Pillars...I think this is a fun worker placement game with lots of interesting decisions.

Admittedly, I had mixed feelings about the randomness introduced into the game by "events cards," and "the draw from the bag" mechanic of the second round of worker placements in each turn.

But...was it my imagination, or was the game so well designed and play-tested that it all kind of balanced out such that you got the fun and excitement of surprises, but these surprises did not decisively determine the outcome of the game? I thought that this was the case, but I guess I would have to play Pillars again to get a better idea.

But the bottom line was that many of the mechanics, choices, and surprises seemed fun and challenging to think about...at least for fans of worker placement games like me.
