Bought this new when it first came out. I have played it once and liked it. You need to know the story to play the game though. There is some trivia involved.

Okay, game snobs. Once again, you've trashed a perfectly good family game because it's not some new, amazing brain crunch game. This is a FAMILY game. Rate it as such. mumbling under my breath (we need a new website… BGG is just a bunch of spreadsheet geeks with no sense of simple, game fun)

My family loved it. I played with my son (5), daughter (11) and wife (?). Great time. Mildly thematic, but enough to put you in the theme. Luck, for sure. I lost miserably and happily. I like some of the variants posted. It's $12 and amazing for that price. Great pieces, decent card, nice artwork… Seriously, get it if you have a family that like LOTR.

Rules are simple and complete. Game played in about 55 minutes (don't forget the 5 year old and a spacey 11 year old girl). We'll smooth that down in the coming months.

Brilliant children's game, my 6-year old loves it. Especially as we're reading the book at the same time. Lots of atmosphere, some choices and some excitement. It is a children's game, though, don't pull this out with your (grown up) friends.

Another simple game that's still fun to play. I like to introduce this game to people who are... not-so-in-touch with their "nerd" side. It's simple, fast, and reasonably fun.

Rated as a children's game - they enjoy it and understand it and are excited by the components. Could also be enjoyed by brainburned and inebriated adults as an end of session game. A lot of luck and just a pinch of strategy.

While this is not a filler (it takes at least 90 minutes to play), it's still a good light game, and when you have enough of strategic thinking and monster games... this is it! However, please remember that this is still a game for very young gamers.

Rated as a kid game. Works great with the default rules for kids that can count above 10 which my 5 year old boys have no problem with. I recommend using the rules mentioned in http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/311196/playing-the-hobbi... for the first play(s).

The BEST game to play with kids, 6 to whatever! Not something to bring to board game night with your buddies, but definitely something to bring to family gatherings. I recommend to sort out the Adventure Cards into the areas where they occur. Makes it feel more like you're going through the book!

Overall, I definitely recommend this game to young families that love The Hobbit/Tolkien/Middle Earth.

Aquired for $5 in Fantasy Flight sale Nov 2006. Graham's Xmas pressie.

Son, just turned eight, loves this game, he also likes the artwork and the bits. First time he's seen a die with more than 6. It's a good game for adults to play with kids younger than the stated age of 10 .

The penalties are too light and it makes it like 'fine, i'll try this since i won't lose much anyway'....
and once you hit the jackpot score of 20, you win....hmm....sounds all too easy. Was interesting really at the beginning though and my friends enjoyed it quite abit...

Fun if played for what it is - a light adventure game geared towards younger players. I think many of the other ratings did not take this into consideration, and thus may have rated it more harshly. Good family game, and actually has a good bit of theme to it as well.

A nice, light adventure game. Good for introducing newbies in fantasy - adventure board games. Also very good for introducing children into board games as well as for learning them to count, solve easy riddles, pronounce some difficult words etc.And with a good story underneath!
I changed my mind about the game when I started playing with my six year old son

This game is the subject of a lot of negativity and I can understand why-- yet The Hobbit is far from a bad game, just a badly marketed one. The box says that The Hobbit is for ages 10+; 6-10 is more like it. As a roll-and-move game for kids, this game is way up there. Instead of condemning players to the fate of the dice, the game lets them choose to move to one of 3 locations with every roll. Once at the location, a player will often be given even more choices of what course of action to take. Ultimately, most events in the game are settled with either a roll or a spinner, but as an adventure game for young kids, the game does a good job of catering to them as opposed to pandering to them.

Not a great strategic game, after all it was made for kids. However the fun comes in the backstory of the cards and for tolkien fans that should be enough to entertain you. If youre not a tolkien fan, stay away.
