Thought provoking, but not too stressful. Because it can be played collaboratively, it is very social. The flavour of the period comes out beautifully. You can play it lying on a sofa!

Great atmosphere, lovely plotting. Rosie and I have always played this cooperatively rather than competitively.

The following contains NO SPOILERS.

CASE 1: Got tricked. I was on the right track but then I found an alternative motive which somehow convinced me and I made a wrong bet. So close. Now I know to check all the leads before making any assumptions.
CASE 2: So, I was stupid. I got the killer and understood much else, even some of the little things, but the motive escaped me. Now, of course the solution was logical and the clues were plain to see but I still didn't get it. Frustrating and exhilarating at the same time. Can't wait for the next one. I made the decision to investigate every case thoroughly and not to compete with Holmes. Two reasons: Holmes can't be beat and the cases are so well written that I want to enjoy them fully.
CASE 3: A bit easier case, although part of the case was spoiled by a case of The Mansion Murders but maybe not by that much, the solution was quite plain to see. Solved the case and knew almost everything about it.
CASE 4: Solved it. Good case, a bit complicated at first sight but not really after that. Only bits of the coded message went unsolved.
CASE 5: Solved, quite easy especially when compared to some of the other cases.
CASE 6:Solved.
CASE 7: The Thames Murders was one of the best cases of the Consulting Detective. Nicely complicated case which made me really scrap my head until I understood and admitted that it really had happened what I thought had happened. Solved completely.
CASE 8:Good case again. Quite simple especially when comparing it to the case that preceded it, but interesting nonetheless. Mostly solved, a small detail escaped me.
CASE 9: At beginning this was quite easy and I realized some basic details very soon. Best part of the case was how it surprised me with bitter tenderness. Very good case.
CASE 10: Like the previous, some details, even major, were easily grasped at the beginning of the case - but the rest of the details were very nicely done and made the case truly excellent. I really liked the motive, which, I must admit, espaced me.

Consulting Detective is definately one of the very best and without a doubt the most original game I have ever have an honour to play. Although all the cases weren't that deep or hard as one could wish, they were very immersive and very well written. I was glued to the game from the moment I started a new case and was thinking about clues even when I wasn't playing.

Great game for those who like mysteries and are looking for a total immersion experience in late-Victorian London. Very well done mysteries. No board, but you use several reference materials (replica 1890 London address book, city map, London Times newspaper, etc.). Good solo game, or with a partner trying to solve the mystery in as few clues as possible. Great atmosphere if you have imagination.

I rate this a 10 because I love what it is striving to achieve and because I want to play it more often than I do. I'd play it more frequently, in fact, if it were not for the limited number of cases. It does have some flaws though that I've had to overlook: the conclusion of some of the cases appears impossible to arrive at for the players.

French version "détective conseil".

The best cooperative investigation game I know.
Imersive and intelligent.

Unfortunately no more edited. And then limited in cases to solve...

The Autumn Gamer is a pirate, Blustering in from sea, With a rollocking song, he sweeps along, Swaggering boisterously. The Autumn Gamer is a raider, Pillaging just for fun. He'll knock you 'round and upside down, And laugh when he's conquered and won.

This is one of my favorite games. I love the fact that you can play alone, with one other person, or with a group. The components are of good quality and include a map of London, newspaper archives (printed in book form, but still nice), a directory of London residents and businesses, and introductory materials that set the scene (in case you're not a Holmes' fan) and establish how you are to proceed in order to solve each case. The cases themselves are plausible and the clues are reasonable. It's possible to draw this game out for hours if your group is given to debate, or to wrap things up relatively quickly if all players are in agreement as to how best to proceed, and on the interpretation of the clues collected. My only complaint about the game is that part of the scoring for each case is based on a quiz requiring knowledge of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. This puts those not in the know at a disadvantage. (5+5) solo plays: 2

One of my very favorite games of all time -- no randomness involved, and next to no replay value (if you remember the mysteries). But it's all narrative and player choice. And kinda hard!

Dead. Solid. Perfect.

For the first time since joining BGG six years ago, I tried to give a game a 10.5! BGG wouldn't allow me to do this, and I understand that it would skew the ratings...but the game deserves it!

This is so much fun as a cooperative game. My family called an intermission, intending to continue the next day, but twenty minutes later my daughter sat down next to me and initiated a conversation sorting through all the possibilities that went on until we all decided to take our chances against Holmes.

The game plays absolutely fair, but it IS tricky!

Highly recommended for all who-dunnit fans. The game puts the gamer INTO the mystery!
