Very alternative way of thinking. Got to have the right group to play. This game is a genre itself, an excellent addition to boardgames.

After some plays, I have to say, the game plays A LOT better if you master your first case. It should have a walkthrough and a sample story I think.

Also, some stories, e.g. story 7 (Banker's Quietus) seem almost impossible to solve completely and there is no explanation of how Holmes walked through some of the deductive steps. This is the only fault of the game.

A deduction game quite unlike any other - almost an RPG or an extended piece of interactive literature. It's deeply thematic, quirky, beautifully written, rich with possibilities and historical touches, and I absolutely love it. But then, I'm the sort of odd person whose favourite bit of any spy thriller is the endless poking about in dusty libraries looking for clues.

It's virtually a given that you need the right crowd for this - invariably a group of Holmes buffs who will dress up and act their way throughout the thing. And it's peculiarly interesting how collaboration arises from the mechanics and storytelling themselves, even if you start off with purely selfish intentions.

A very interesting 'game' concept to which the word game can only be applied on a very loose basis. It is more of a collaborative narrative whodunnit experience with lots of clues and deducing. I think it is the most fun if played cooperatively and pondering about who the culprit might be. Sometimes the clue matrix does not really work and there are no clues where there should be clues (in my opinion) and i would not have minded a few more red herrings for good measure, just to make the city of London feel more dynamic and alive with people bustling all over the place. Anyway, interesting game and one of the rare occasions where the theme is perfectly captured in a game.

I'm quite torn on this game. On the one hand I absolutely loved the way it made me feel while we were playing. It was like reading an actual murder mystery novel and trying to come up with the solution before the detective does it for you. It led to lots of interesting discussions amongst the group, and we came up with a ton of intriguing theories. Yet after all this fun deduction and debate, we read the solution and I felt there was not a chance for us to come up with those answers. I even reexamined clues that we never read, and saw no conceivable way they could have led us to that solution. I'm fine with them sowing lots of red herrings into the game and making it tough on the detectives, but it should at least be possible when the right path is taken. I also fear the replayability is just a bit too low to be worth the cost. I understand that this is inevitable because of the amount of detail they put into each mystery, but since the solutions are so memorable, I don't think you could ever replay the same mystery. In the end I think it's a good game, because I can't deny the pure enjoyment I experienced while playing, I just wish it was executed slightly different.

Great game, but Case 3 and no PDF knock down the rating a bit. A PDF would be useful to print out the newspapers for players before reading the case, the frequently consulted locations, and the map. I find it *very* useful to take notes on the map and case book, rather than a "can't touch the original copy" case book.

Great idea, but this is not a boardgame. It is a puzzle. Also, what is written and what you would like to ask to suspects are normally different things
