This is the Naval game I have been looking for. The rules are easy to get into, and it gives me another excuse to buy more miniatures, although the counters included look good.

Easy to learn and fairly quick to play, yet has a good feel for WWII naval combat. Comes with ship counters, but is really a set of miniatures rules.

Based on the rules set for B5 A call to arms, this is an excellent naval combat game.

the rules are fluid and easy to understand, this is a great starter game as it comes with all the counters needed to play.

Im a big fan of Naval stuff anyway, and this is a fun, realistic set of rules. We played our game the other night; Bismark (John; never played a naval game in his life)and Prinz Eugen (me) vs Hood and KGV (Iain and Pete). Gunnery was commenced at long range and damage caused from the off; by turn 3 Bismark was a wreck and was (in a twist of fate) destroyed by a magazine explosion from Hood.
A good quick rule set that doesn't get too bogged down in technical minutae.

Victory at Sea is a quite enjoyable game/system. Simple system and a very small initial investment make it easy to get into. Small scenarios play quickly for those moments when you only have time for a quick conflict fix.

Well, I'm afraid it'll have to wait. Whatever it was, I'm sure it was better than my plan to get out of this by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman round here?

Settlers of Catan does not improve with your house rules. The best option if you don't like the rules as written is to just select another game.

Have not played yet. Art on counters is nice, but the font on the counters makes them very hard to read. Some seem to have misprinted text (text does not match picture). Rules look like they will be quick to pick up and play.

Excellent game on ship to ship duals. Weakest part is the air game, an issue I hope gets addressed. Torpedoes seem to be the ultimate wapon; beware the Long Lance!

Mongoose Publishing did a good job on this WWII naval miniatures game, based on their Babylon 5: A Call to Arms ruleset. Plays on 6'x4' tabletop. Very reminiscent of Battlefleet Gothic and Warhammer Fantasy. My only real beef is that airplanes are underpowered. (My game group really hated the invulnerable destroyers at flank speed, also, so we played a house rule that the target speed modifier does not apply to secondary arms. Don't know if further official rules updates have addressed this.) Rulebook comes with paper chits representing ships so you don't have to build & paint minis if that's not your thing. Try this one if you get a chance.

Update: Mongoose has put out a supplemental book, VaS: Order of Battle. They tweaked the basic rules, including making secondary arms ignore target speed, as my group had house-ruled before. Many additional ships and optional rules, also. Haven't purchased or played the new rules as of yet.

The emphasis is on quick and fun, but it gets marked down due to unnecessarily unrealistic rules. In particular, I don't like the way torpedoes bounce off battleships and destroyers that literally cannot be hit. There is supplement due out soon and I expect that it will address some common complaints about the game.

My rating is based on just a couple of small surface actions but my first impression is very positive. This system provides just enough detail to keep me interested without becoming a dicefest. If you are a ballistics geek who knows the armor thickness of every ship in the Italian Navy these rules are not for you. If you are looking for a fun set of rules that produces historic outcomes and can be used for larger battles, then this would be a good purchase. The publishers provide free support and there is a very active forum . The biggest complaints I have heard concern the air and torpedo rules, but the upcoming supplement coming out supposedly overhauled both of these sections. It also comes with paper ship counters to use if you don't paint miniatures.

Playtester, I have some bias. I can play 15 ships and actually finish a game. Not the most detailed but it's good enough. Playable and fun. That I have gotten out of minis gaming has lowered my rating.

Good game, improved by Order of Battle.
A few minor ahistorical quirks, but I'll put up with those because of the good game play.
Would be even better if it included some of the historical tweaks from Age of Dreadnoughts.
