The more I play this game, the more possibilities I see in developing opening strategies and winning moves. I would also enjoy seeing a few other insects added to the pieces.

I never get tired of this game!

I finally broke down and got the bakelite version and mosquito, almost the same day that
Hive Carbon is announced. It features the same game play as Hive but with stylin' black-on-white and white-on-black pieces instead of the multicolor bugs running around in the current edition.

(Also have bakelite, and wooden version with the wrinkled stickers.)

Second Edition

The components are among the highest tier in my collection and boost my rating way more than they should. I burned myself out on the Java applet of Hive a while back but have recently been reinvigorated by playing face to face (it's a whole different game). Hive is a more interesting and shorter version of Chess to me. It's compact, simple, yet deep and engaging. This along with Carc is probably one of my most played games, enjoying much love and attention. It gets bonus points for being boardless and playable virtually anywhere with a flat surface. My girlfriend and I often cart it along to restaurants while we wait for the meal or outside to enjoy in the sun on the grass. What other games can you do that with?

This is a great game to keep in your purse or in the glove compartment of your car for those unexpected waits. The game is eye-catchingly attractive and the rules are quite elegant. The game play scratches that hard to reach Chess itch without requiring book study to be competitive.

Although my husband beats me every time, I can't get enough of the enjoyable but basic strategy of trying to surround his queen bee with my ants, beetles, spiders and grasshoppers. Perfect game for travel too...we take this when we go camping or to play in hotels during overnight stays. Easy to learn, fun for pretty much any age or personality type. Plus, when played in public places, Hive draws attention and can be a good conversation starter!

Currently my most played game.

Simply beautiful, with weighty, chunky Bakelite pieces.

The depth of chess, but quicker, more fun, and more user friendly to beginners.

Great little abstract with fabulous bits and rapid play time. For those who love Chess over Go (like me)--it's surprisingly deep for such a fast, simple game. I can predict fairly confidently that this will be my most-played game of 2007--it's so quick, fascinating, great to look at and travels anywhere. My rating may actually increase...it could be the perfect game, for all the reasons previously stated.

Don't just play this once or twice. And don't think that the beetle is the only piece that can pin the queen bee. And don't think that the queen bee is the only piece that can be pinned to gain big strategic advantages.

Do think that this is a short but very deep game for it's scope and length. It's the kind of game where, after one or two plays you might think there's not enough to it, but after 4 or 5 or 12 more plays, you've found a dozen other ways of accomplishing things.

I've got the 3rd edition bakelite version. So, it's perfect travel/bar game.

THE BAKE-LITE VERSION!

Even if you're not a fan of abstract games, this game is a blast! you'll mull over this game as it was chess, for each different kind of bug as a specific move pattern. a big plus is its transportability, as it is in an extremely small but sturdy box. as the pieces are heavy wood and there is no board required, i've played this game on the beach! its a beauty to look at; this fact alone attracts player's interest. game instruction takes about 5 minutes. hey, the pieces even come with their sickers already stuck on 1st edition). I like the new polymer tiles and tile bag. way to go, gen-four-two! a must-own!

An absolutely wonderful, quick, 2-player abstract game. For a game that can be finished in 20 minutes, this game gets your brain going. The clever casting of bug maneuvers into the mechanics of the game really make this game a gem.

TRULY EXCELLENT.

Deep, quick, brain-burner of a game. A board-less affair with chesslike maneuvring, and heaps of continual jockeying for optimum position.
Hive is virtually unknown outside the grand halls of the gaming cognisenti, which is a gargantuan disgrace. I try to spread the gospel of Hive everywhere I go, reaching out to orphans and offering them hexagonal beetles...

On first playing this, my group started a winner-stays-on thing around the table. I took to the game like a duck to water, and ended up playing continually. No one could beat me... that night or ever. The glove is down.
I have the fantastic bakelite edition, and had to ship it from Germany to get it. Why didn't a British distributor grab this with both greedy paws? Who knows the minds of these clay-pipe smoking merchants? Not little old me.

Back to the game! Hive looks great and plays better. Simple to learn, difficult to master. How many more soundbites can I squeeze into my ramblings about this game? Quite a truckload more, I should say!
My GF hates it - playing with insects switches her mind right off! Then again, she likes Scooby Doo Monopoly.

I discover a new play, or strategy, every single time I play this wonderful game.
Hive works beautifully as a travel game or as a sit-down game at home. The feel of the heavy pieces is also a PERFECT geek pleasure. Yeah, baby.
The only thing I would have done differently to the designer: changed the powers of the beetle and the spider around. No joke.
What! Why do that?
Because it makes more sense for a spider to pin other bugs. Plus, spiders are cooler insects. Period.

Some people seem to have trouble remembering the specific powers of each bug - don't play with these losers. Play instead with someone who loves gaming as much as me!

STRATEGY TIPS:

1.Remember that the queen can move too - some folks leave her stranded!
2.Use your ants - they are the most versatile piece, and your saviour/destroyer.
3.Use the beetle to enable placing of your own pieces about her - this is just gravy!
4.Try to pin your opponent's pieces when they have formed "arms".
5. Sometimes the hive will form 2 "arms" that are almost touching - use this to your advantage: move pieces across the divide, if advantageous.
6. NEVER give up! There's always a killer move you could make, you only have to look harder...

I could play this marvellous little game until the cows came home.. had tea and scones, and run a bath.

Insta-classic, just add two players to get a superb game. Strategic with absolute lack of randomness, just like Chess or Go but with some more interesting options due to the choice of when placing a certain bug.

Fast, fun and cool. I don't usually like abstracts and this is the big exception. It's very easy to explain, a game plays in 10/15 minutes and the cool bakelite pieces make this the ideal travel game. It's one of those games where a player can really improve his/her skill with repeated plays. This is the star of the summer!

I haven't been able to wrap my head around the strategy yet, but I think I could see this working as a good filler game.

Jan. 25, 2008 -- Originally, I gave this a score of 7/10, but the more I think about this game, the more I want to play it -- and play it regularly. Upgraded the rating. I just wish I could find opponents more often. 8/10

April 14, 2013 -- Over the years, this has become my favourite game. I never get tired of it. I always enjoy playing it. And I enjoy repeated playings in a single sitting. 10/10
