First game I've rated a 10. Maybe it is not a perfect game, but the description of "10" fits my thoughts for this game exactly. This is fun to play as a filler, or as a best-of-3 hour-long session. Good over coffee at Starbucks or while watching TV.

Loved playing this game. Great for a quick 10 minute play, or as a chess alternative.

Great abstract game. Love the pieces and love that opposing insect forces can be assymetrical. Truly a gem!

2p, wood or bakelite hex pieces, depending on edition. No randomness. Funner and QUICKER than chess. Theme is consistent and evocative. Became a smash hit to play during lunch at work, and several other people bought sets.

Makes me interested in trying Dragons of Kir and Darter (Darter).

Received wooden edition in trade for SoC/KnCoC 5-6 player expansion November 2006. Bought several more wooden editions on clearance a few years later.

Picked up June 2006

Homemade version made of Sculpey clay.

Saw this game and I had to make my own set to try it out. I still suck at it but I like the simplicity of it. Polymer clay and adhesive labels...and maybe some adhesive magnetic sheets if you want to play on your fridge. This was a great way to try the game out to see if my wife liked it (she didn't).

I think this is a great game but I have no one to play this with.

Finally got the Bakelite edition. Really nice!

Keeper.

Wanting the Carbon edition.

My current favorite two-player abstract. Had the full-sized edition, traded it for store credit and got the travel edition to avoid the temptation to buy expansions.

EDIT -- Didn't work; bought the pillbug expansion!

A tactical game.

The differing pieces' movements remind me of chess, but they differ more greatly - the beetle and grasshopper specially having no analogues and taking some time to fully understand the capabilities of.

Thanks to the restrictions on movement or placement and the lack of starting pieces, analysis paralysis has never been a problem for me and I don't expect it to be.

Games only take a few minutes but still feel like a full experience.

I'm strongly considering buying this. I'll probably do so if I still enjoy it after the boardspace tournament.

2008-04-20
(23 recorded plays - probably about 27 plays)

On Saturday, I played an overly long game that seemed to threaten to end in a stalemate. Though never repeating a 'loop' of actions, our pieces danced back and forth, with the meaning behind each move constantly diminishing until I won thanks to my opponent's mistake.

I was worried that stalemates would be a real possibility and that play would be very repetitive, but having played a long game against thw 5th best boardspace player and losing, despite realising afterwards that I had at least two opportunities to win, gives me hope for the reverse.

The greatly variable playtime is an interesting factor. I think I prefer the more definite ending of other games - like Go, which will see roughly the same number of moves played on the same size of board.

Of course, Go is never as short as the shortest games of Hive...

35 plays

Another two supremely long games today.

I think I enjoyed the game more when it was over within around 10 minutes rather than taking over half an hour.

Towards the end, there was a long period when I felt little progression in the game. There was some change and my opponent did outplay me to snatch a win out of the jaws of a draw but getting there felt so slooow with little appreciable change in the gamestate.

Again, I'm reminded how much I enjoy the clear progression in Go.

I enjoyed this game when I was first getting to grips with it - it felt like a full experience could be had wihin a few minutes.

Now, I think I've reached a higher level and games I lose seem to drag on.

I guess you could consider Hive to have a quick setup phase (lasting until both queens are deployed), a quick beginning phase (lasting until both queens are pinned), the mid-phase (as the insects are deployed) then the possibility of a long end-game (as the pieces dance around). Beginner games seem to be won before the midphase ends, whilst the end-game requires new strategies, more foresight and can last far longer than the rest of the game put together.

In this way, Hive mutates from a quick thing into a more drawn-out affair.

Should test it with my wife before purchasing. Should have, but didn't, because the price was just too good to pass up. Bought 2 copies from MindwareOnline.com on 4/15/08. Arrived 4/23/08. Traded extra copy for Travel Blokus, Vagabondo, and Squint.

Just starting to catch on to what not to do. BTW, don't mention chess when teaching this to someone, in case they don't like chess. They might still like Hive.

Sold second copy in Fall Hoopla Silent Auction on 9/29/12.
