Excellent game, more different from Twilight Struggle than many would think, plays even quicker. Interesting period, great research, top notch components, original theme - what more do you want? A great box insert? Nay, that you don't get, mate....

Excellent two player game. Once both players have played the game, gameplay should be less than one hour. The learning curve is low, and the game might suffer from replayability with no way to counter your opponents actions.

I found this game to be an extremely well balanced arm wrestling match. After one play, I am still pondering the decisions, the events, the debates and the issues. Intriguing game.

Outstanding game by Christian Leonhard and Jason Matthews, the Designer of Twilight Struggle. So many layers of interest, brilliantly meshed together to create a truly nail-biting experience. Each card from your hand can be used as Campaign Points to gain favor in a particular region (4 total regions, across the USA map), move to another region, gain media coverage in a region (which makes takeovers easier), gain Endorsements (which wins all undecided states in a region, during the last round election), to gain points in issues (points in Civil Rights, Defense, and Economy gain momentum and/or endorsements), or as an Event. The Events are historical events that happened during the election and they are played out in game terms (such as adding or removing campaign cubes to and from certain states or regions). The catch is that when you use a card for something other than an Event, the opposing player can hijack the event for himself and use it against you! This design is so solid and approachable, I think it could appeal to almost any gaming audience.

After just a few plays, I'm beginning to see what all the hype is about -- discounting the first run, which was an anomoly of imbalance at every turn, the game is wrought with tension and difficult decisions. Great stuff!

Okay, played once myself and then once with an actual person. It's a great game. Lots of things that you want to do, but limited resources mean you have some tough decisions. Our game ended Kennedy 254, Nixon 283. Nixon got Texas right at the end, barely and that made the difference.

Played a number of times, and I still like it. Beautiful layout and components, and very competitive interactions, using a CDG system pulled out of 'Twilight Struggle.' I like the debates and the subtle way in which political issue leverage is tracked. Cool game.

I have only played this once but really really liked it. I know a bit about the 1960 election and this game evoked its theme very well. Since it's a) two-player and b) about an election, it won't be a game that gets played a lot, but when I have the time and a willing partner, this will be the first suggestion.

category: medium

about 2 hours-ish for this, although I've yet to play someone a second game as yet, to see how experience speeds it up. One of the things that drops this from being played a bit is that it's 2 player. Usually there are at least 3 people around who want to play a board game, usually more, so 1960 generally gets pushed to one side. I'll have to make the time, I quite enjoy it, and am hoping Z-man bring out some expansions for it. Don't know how, though....

I played two times yesterday! What a fun game! The only problem I can see is with its replayability and perhaps scripting. The thing is that it's a good game, but I feel that a lot of cards will always be played in the same way. You will always see the same cards ending up in the election day event box. I think over time things will be so obvious (partly because the full deck is almost always played) that replayability might be a concern.

2/3/08 I played two more games last night, and altough I am still concerned about some of the ' automated' responses to specific cards, and other diversity issues; for the time being I love to play and so this game desirves its 9.

Edit 22 may 2009. It's still up there! The third game in my top 10! All things I feared in the previous post have not occured. Quite the contrary the game is turning more and more interesting the more times you play it. As long as you allow yourself to diversify in strategy.

29-08-2012: I've played this game so many times now. I don't think I will ever get bored of it. Sure, it has its weaknesses. But it is certainly not predictable or scripted. I don't believe there is a whole lot more to discover for me anymore. But what is there, is just so much fun to play.

I'm giving this a crazy-high initial rating, because I found my first game to be engrossing and immersive, and I can't get it out of my head. 1960: The Making of the President is Die Macher for the rest of us. Or Die Macher for when you only have two.

The theme is enticing, and the gameplay seems to mimic quite well the chaotic machine of election-year politicking. In this case, we have two candidates attempting to exert control over an inherently chaotic system. And it works!

The mechanic here is area-control, which in terms of the theme represent election-year issues, endorsements, media control, and ultimately, electoral votes. Equally important in terms of mechanics is hand-management as everything comes down to card play. But with an enormously wide variety of card events, and several things that can be influenced by them, the replayability of 1960 seems extremely high even given the static set-up and the rather deterministic outcome, based on the fact that the Kennedy player seems to have an edge over the Nixon player. There are many strategic paths that can be explored.

It's obvious a lot of thought went into this game. (The event cards alone provide a fantastic history lesson) Lots of unique and inspired stuff going on.

Aside from that, the production is fantastic, and graphically, it's one of the best board games I've seen.

Very satisfying two-player game. Somewhat abstracted from actual political campaigning, and it's far from clear that there isn't a single dominant strategy. The arithmetic aspects of the game make it somewhat better played on a computer than on the board.

I like politics and I love political history, but I'd thought I'd hate them in a game. On the surface this struck me as a bit of a snooze but how wrong I was. This is an excellent game that cleverly combines hand management and area control. I would posit that the Nixon player seem to have a bit of an advantage (the Nixon player has won about 90% of the 20 or so games we've played) due to the geographical starting positions but that's my only gripe with this game. It is now my favourite two-player game, and it plays under the 2-hrs mark. With 1960 every day is a SuperTuesday!

Excellent components. A good game, but sometimes runs a little long. Made me look up several of the historical events that appear in this game, which is always a good sign.

Still, low play count, as I just don't get the opportunity to play it all that much. Most of my 2-player time is spent playing Wargames, and that's rare enough.

Enjoyable and filled with interesting decisions from beginning to end. The games are usually so close that you won't really know who wins until the very end. When you're on the losing end of a close game you will kick yourself for decisions you made way earlier in the game. Like many CDG games this one can suffer from a runaway leader if a beginner is playing someone who really know the cards, but for two players on equal footing this will be a battle to the end.

FWIW, this is probably one of the heaviest games I've gotten my wife to play that she has actually enjoyed

This game is one of the best thematic games out there. . .it has some balance issues though based on the luck of the draw. . .meaning sometimes per the cards you can get in a hole or lose a lead rather quickly. . .other than that though, if you like politics and history this is a great choice!

Excellent game that recreates a fascinating period in American history. The game is very well designed and every move has advantages and trade-offs. Z-Man has given the game top drawer production values as well. This game incorporates the historical feel and attention to theme of a wargame with the ease of play and tense decisions of a Euro.

Nearly flawless (issues a bit too strong, media a bit too weak) design that is a cousin (twice removed) of GMT's phenomenal Twilight Struggle. Easy to learn, easy to play, yet has surprising depth. Evocative, and captures the election campaign so very well. The more I play this game (25+ plays), the more I want to go again - it takes you along for quite an enjoyable ride.
