Game seems too chaotic for any real planning. One or two card combinations seem broken eg 'no campaign actions without paying momentum tokens' combined with 'no momentum tokens can be played until end of turn' = I've just lost. Please let me burn this game!

Two-thirds of one play.

Initially the game reminded me of reading a high school history book. In some ways this is good as the cards have a lot of flavor text, but mostly this is bad as high school history books are the best cure for insomnia that I know of.

Fast forward to the present and the game is afoot. Nixon (me) is losing. Not badly, but losing nonetheless. He decides to capture the East, specifically New York which appears to be the decider in many of the session reports on BGG. To do this, he is crafty. He gains and loses media control over a few turns until there are two media support in the East, which makes it more difficult to remove Nixon's support. Nixon continues by campaigning heavily in New York, carrying the state with 5 state support. Finally he camps out there. Any ONE of these things should make life difficult for Kennedy as support checks are now required to campaign in NY. Or so it was thought.

Two Kennedy events later, state support is destroyed without a single support check. Then something happened that has never happened in a presidential race - Nixon quit. Yep, a first for me but the game made me so mad that I quit. If all the work of many turns could be wiped out with two cards, I don't feel the game is worth playing.

In short, I knew the events were powerful, but I did not realize how devastating a good hand of events is versus a bad hand. Campaigning was a complete waste of time compared to good events. So I am not impressed.

On a positive note, this game has one of the best boards I have ever seen!

I understand how this game is rated so high, but I just can't get over how it really just isn't very fun. It has some interesting mechanics, and I love how it is card-driven. However, there are some key flaws: the debates are underwhelming, as it's really the advantage of maybe one extra card. The issues generally are taken over initially and then rarely challenged. The key states are really the only ones to fight over, and extra points are offered on the other ones.

Overall, the main issue is that the theme falls very flat for me. I don't get the sense that I'm campaigning, as I can't keep track of whether I'm losing or winning at the polls. Instead, I fight for area control in a few states and then hope that the final tally which is long and time-consuming results in a victory. By contrast, Twilight Struggle has all the card-driven goodness plus the immediate feedback of where you stand by having a victory track. Last but not least, I never feel the sense of accomplishment that I got something done, like finally getting a ship built in Le Havre or winning a scoring round in TS. Simply put, this was disappointing, not fun, and I spent the two hours I played it wishing just about anything else was on the table.

Thought it was passable, however I didn't fully understand the rules, and would play again. However, Twilight Struggle didn't light a fire under me so I doubt this game would, I found that the card draw greatly impacted the game, which is usually okay but in these two games it seemed to shift the balance too much.

Horrible luckfest. For two of the nine? turns I had literally NO cards that I could play that would not benefit my opponent more than me, and in two others I had one card worth playing. "Oh, that's so unusual, the game doesn't normally play like that" gets tiresome after the second time. I will NEVER play this again unless there is some way to draft the cards; as written, I feel it CAN BE (not necessarily in every game) broken

Thumbs Down after one game. We found the impacts of debate to be too weak (even if you invest lightly, and your opponent heavily, the odds are very high that you can force no worse than a 7-2 loss... and a 5-cube difference will be more than offset by the better cards you played on the board). I would be inclined to then have 3 of the 5 cards be my opponent's biggest events buried, which lessens the impact of momentum (which already seems weak). This in turn weakens issues.

So, what's left to actually care about is the tit-for-tat influence struggle, which is really simplistic and boring. Also, it seems some events are just really killer windfalls.

Objectively speaking, it's a very interesting design with great chrome, but that's not enough for me to make up for a dull game.

If randomness was a serious problem in Twilight Struggle, it is bluntly lethal in this one.

Some events are way too powerful. And if you get lucky drawing the right cards when your opponent does not during a turn or two, your advantage can turn into a mountain impossible to climb.

Besides, there's little than someone can do to take advantage of your own candidate's most powerful events if
they fall in your opponent's hands.

The black bag reminds me of the now-so-famous Shogun tower and its "impredictible" results.

And last but not least, all the thematic details as media support, issue support, endorsements or the debates (what a lamey depiction of the latter!) seem to be pretty much worthless. You are better off by focusing on placing as many cubes as you can in the most meaningful states and forget about the rest of the game.

All in all, a completely overhyped and overrated game that can be fun once in a while if you enjoy moving cubes all over the board.

Liked the cards, though. But this game does not deliver the thrill of being a candidate in an election campaign at all.

I can't really see what the big deal is. It is tug-of-war with a random power of 2, 3, or 4. I add a cube, you take a cube away, etc, etc, for two solid hours. Maybe you have to really be into the theme.

The cards, on the other hand, are excellent. They use old newspaper headlines, with what appears to be actual photographs of what the card is referring to. I had much more fun going through the deck and reading the cards while I was learning the rules than actually playing the game.

My first play. The game really moved along quickly. You really get the feel of the ebb and flow of the election...and the events really gave the time frame some shape. I enjoy history, especially 20th century, and this game was enjoyable.

Thinking about it more, I haven't wanted to play this once since that time. The major reason is it really lacked excitement and an edge that TS has. The game doesn't balance on the tip of a pin like TS does and that kills it for me.

1960: The Making of the President was an anniversary gift from my girlfriend to me. I played it twice after receiving it, and each time I found it interesting but not quite there for me. It was somewhat enjoyable, and I like playing it when the game comes up, but a lot of the decisions seem to be made on auto-pilot. When I am playing the game, I am playing the game, I am not "absorbed" into the game. I guess that part of it is that I wish the game was just a little bit heavier. A little bit more involved decision-wise. A little bit less about tit-for-tat exchanges and more about interesting and exciting moves. Instead it just ends up being slightly procedural and underwhelming.

When I acquired Twilight Struggle, I realized that it was everything I wanted 1960 to be and more and got rid of my copy.

I love TS but not his. What gives?

First, I don't find the theme all that engaging. Playing TS, I can see an alternate history unfolding before me. But this? I'm just not as familiar with the 1960 election as I am with the broader cold war.

Second, there's too much chrome. I enjoy the influence game on the main board but found the debates, issues, endoresements, and media control sub-sytems to be a needless distraction.

Finally, I didn't find the rulebook all that clear and was constantly having to go back to the rulebook. With TS, I was up to speed quite quickly.

Nope... didn't care for it. Quite a disappointment...

Got to play this once. I enjoyed it a lot and would love to play again. It feels very luck driven with the cards, but you also feel like you're trying to get elected, so the theme works well.

Update: Played a second time and it was horrible, everything relies on a single mechanic, the issues.

Consistently irritating, win lose or draw. This is a game I would refuse to play under most circumstances.

The gameplay falls flat on its face for a simple reason: influence is zero-sum / tit-for-tat. Entire turns can be flushed down the toilet undoing and re-doing identical moves. It is utterly tedious. Beyond that, there are three secondary failings. First, the "debates" are poorly integrated. You're supposed to save up your good cards (thematically) for them, but in practice, you just pitch your bad cards, because the rewards of winning the debates pale in comparison to the rewards for pitching the worst of your opponent's events (and deliberately losing the debates as a result). Second, there's no scoring at all until the end, which just intensifies the slogging it takes to get there. I don't even see this as terribly thematic. Mr. Matthews says it makes the game more strategic and less tactical, and I admire that in theory, but to my eyes the zero-sum nature of influence heavily undermines the potential for long-term play. Third, the events are about as subtle as a sledgehammer, and unexciting to boot. They don't give you interesting choices, and they don't create interesting effects within the game.

Overrated. Rating based on only one play, which was at best OK... but very dissatisfying for the following reasons:

- the debates seem nearly pointless, more a catchall for the discarding of relatively weak cards

- almost always seems better to use the cards for events than OPs

- a lot of back and forth moving of cubes that felt repetitive

- not sure about replay value

- wasn't excited by the game play

I'm quite disappointed of this one.
Ok, US election is more the theme for US players than for Germans.
But I found the games mechanics quite dull (issue support), ineffective (endorsements) and too luck dependent (Turn 6, media support, cards). Momentum is a nice new feature in CDGs, but had mostly passive effects in our games. Board graphics are too basic and confusing IMO. Actual score is always unclear. Too few cubes in all of our games (always exhausted in turn 7).
1960 is far away from the brilliance of Twilight Struggle. Worst CDG so far in my opinion.
5 point rating only due to very good production quality (box, cards + mounted board).

***** UPDATE *****

I find myself opting out of this and prefer to play almost any other CDG right now. I do not like the way the debate works and find the overall game fairly dull. As an intro CDG, this is a good place to start, but I believe that this falls behind the other games in the genre. hannibal adds a bit with the political control markers, but it is not that far beyond this and a better game.

Nicely produced game with excellent bits, but lacking in interesting strategy decisions. Fails to evoke the uncertainty and suspense of an electoral race. The debate mechanic falls flat. In all, playing the game seems almost like a chore. Further, the rules need a bit of work, primarily in cross-referencing terminology, and the box is badly designed -- the bits don't go back in to the space provided. Overall rating of 4 shows that I wouldn't be in a rush to get it to the table again. In this genre, I prefer the Mr. President game from 1967 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/476).

2 / 5 - Fair.

Some solid strategic decisions, especially around creative ordering of card play to maximise benefits. The cube-drawing mechanics is a really nice way of getting some random elements into the game while allowing players some strategic input into tilting the odds. However, and slightly bizarrely for such a relatively simple game, there's a bit too much pointless fluff (endorsements, advertising and other mechanics don't do an awful lot). It also lacks a little in the tension department - it's there at the end, but not through the rest of the game. The fact that most cards just shuffle cubes around makes them hard to differentiate and thus makes it more difficult to relate the game to its historical roots.

A bit of a disappointment, really. TS is one of my all time favorites and the prospect of having a similar game playable in 1.5 hours seemed great. This is not that game, though.

It's playable in 90 minutes, give or take a few. I think luck plays a very significant role, much bigger than in TS, even though there are no dice. The problem is that the luck of the draw can be decisive and the game doesn't provide the players with the tools to deal with it. Rest cubes seem to be the way to balance things out but I don't think they're powerful enough. Campaigning and positioning on the issues are very zero-sum actions, so the whole game becomes a boring and repetitive exercise.

The components are great, the theme is nicely connected to some of the game mechanics and everything is balanced.

[2008.Mar.09] A visually stunning design produced by Z-Man Games, however, after a few plays the game appears to lack the staying power of its predecessor, Twilight Struggle (TS). With only one deck (as opposed to separated decks, like in TS) and no opportunity to re-shuffle (and thus, re-draw/re-encounter cards), the event cards are a little random in their appearance and one or two turns of 'bad' card draws may easily cost you the game. Additionally, the game eventually devolves into the same arm-wrestling contest centered around a handful of large (electoral college-wise) States. ("I put cubes there, and then you take them off; rinse and repeat.") In the end, 1960 removes some of the elements that I didn't like in TS, but unfortunately also removes many the elements that I did like.
