I'm giving this a preliminary 10 after one play. I don't give out 10s lightly; I've only bestowed this honor on two other games (Saint Petersburg and Hive). I'm also using the 'Geek's system of ratings--in other words, I find this game to be "Outstanding. [I] always want to play [it] and expect this will never change."

Of course, time will tell if this rating stands up, but I can honestly say that this game is one of the jewels of my collection. Fantastic game!

Brilliant card-driven area-control game with multiple paths to effect change in control. Play relatively quickly too, and is quite tense right down to counting the final ballots

Great game. Lots of depth and each game will be different. Figuring out how to maximize your points and limit your opponents at the same time can make for some tough decisions. Some minor problems keep it from being a 10 in my book.

I'm not sure if I like this better than Twilight Struggle, but it is more streamlined and has a terrific theme!

After two plays of this game, I am in love with it. I only wish I could read my wife a little better. I know she doesn't particularly like the length of the game. Part of it her fault - she has a little AP syndrome. Her first move of the game took 10 minutes - I timed it! I hope as she becomes more familiar it will streamline. If we could play in 60-90 minutes I am sure it would hit the table more often.

Other than that, there is nothing I don't like about this game. It is so realistic. I haven't played another game where the mechanics and the theme meld so well together. It is so much like real life it is scary. There are about a million things you want to do but are limited by your time and money and have to do what is best at the time. However, there are events taking place all around you that are out of your control. As Kennedy, you want to campaign in the West but Congress calls an emergency session and you must do your job - fly back to Maryland and suffer a penalty to movement. Or as Nixon you bang your knee on your car door and are in the hospital unable to campaign at all.

There have been some people who don't particularly like the debate section. I think it is an interesting part of the game. Winning the last issue allows you to put four state support anywhere on the board. Two turns from election day, this could put a serious hamper on your opponent's final campaign strategy. Trying to figure out how to play your cards without getting burned by opponent's events and placing the right cards into the debates (right issue, right candidate, right CP value) makes for an interesting challenge. I know my wife has been frustrated by her lack of ability to play the debates well and me being able to put a lot of state support onto the board.

Nearly flawless (issues a bit too strong, media a bit too weak) design that is a cousin (twice removed) of GMT's phenomenal Twilight Struggle. Easy to learn, easy to play, yet has surprising depth. Evocative, and captures the election campaign so very well. The more I play this game (25+ plays), the more I want to go again - it takes you along for quite an enjoyable ride.

I have only played this game twice so far, and I'm absolutely loving it! It takes a while to explain and setup (a lot of pieces & tokens to place), along with a considerable amount of rules to learn. But eventually it all clicks. It's a neat blend of area control, bluffing, and a slick card-driven system that allows players many options in playing their hands. It's exciting to see how a particular move can have deep "ripple effects" that impact other layers.

I haven't played Twilight Struggle yet, but from what I hear it's even better than 1960:TMofP (but also longer). Until then, I must say this is an outstanding game as it provides a highly engrossing experience. Both games took nearly 3 hours (with setup & rules explanation). Even so, the time flew on by. It's really a treat to have this much FUN, TENSION, and AGONIZING choices tightly woven in a 2-player game. If there is anything I can remotely complain about, there *MAY* be a slight clunkiness in how the Debate Phase works. Perhaps it's there to help fit the election theme? Or maybe this "clunkiness" is just my imagination.

I also love the tension of building the campaign strategy decks. It's not only a great way to get rid of unfavorable cards (like the Church in San Juan), but it also accelerates the tension. Both the debate and election phases are great "battles" where players run like mad attempting to push states in their favor before the final election.

Excellent job Jason & Chris! Grade: A

A most excellent game. This is all about playing the right cards at the right time, and in the correct order. Everything else is just a bonus. The fact that you can take advantage of a card played by your opponent makes the momentum aspect of the game very important. There is the potential that the "Issues" portion of the game can be a little overpowering, but I think that only works against you if you decide to ignore that part of the game - at your detriment. Expect to lose if you ignore the issues.

Overall, an excellent game, and one that I will try to get to the table as often as possible.

(Never happened - traded it away, as my wife wouldn't play, and I rarely have an opportunity to play a two-player game with anyone other than her or someone that would want to play it. So it is gone due to "lack of exposure", although if someone asked me to play today, I would play it).

Would have been a perfect 10 if the game made better use of the map board. Instead, it is mainly about competing for the most powerful states in the East region like NY, PA, etc. (Yeah, I realise that is thematically correct but I am scoring this from the gameplay point of view).
Art on this is just fantastic!

As far as my track record is concerned, I still proudly maintain a clean sheet after 10 plays with both sides against 6 different opponents including seasoned wargamers, witty ameritrashers and casual gamers alike.

Great game, makes for some nail-bitting moments.
Only drawback is that with extended play the luck factor will matter more.

THANK YOU SECRET SANTA 2009!

This is a great game, similar to Twilight Struggle. 1960 is a bit lighter, faster and more beginner friendly but still offers gaming hours dripping with theme.

I love 'em both.

UPDATE March/2010:
9 -> 10
I constantly want to play this. The strategic and tactical depth of the game combined with an interesting theme has made this a classic.

UPDATE December/2010
10 -> 9
This is a great game but not as good as Twilight Struggle. And because I can't give TS an eleven, I'm afraid 1960 has to do with a nine.

I love this game. Extremely well designed. Absolutely thematic and beautifully designed board. Very interesting card mechanic. The number of options of where to place your cubes confuses my wife but she likes the card mechanic. I don't see me ever trading this one away though it might not get a lot of plays with me and her. When my oldest daughter gets older this will see many more plays.

I really like this, almost as much as Twilight Struggle. The shorter play time is nice, but the game seems friendlier than Twilight Struggle, not as bad to lose in.

One well designed 2-player game. Beautiful push and pull or give and take kind of strategies on more subtle levels. Well designed...so subtle... so subtle. Campaign Manager 2000 is a lighter version of this game which is like a cheeseburger compared to filet mignon.
