Ok...sure, I was skeptical on this awesome move rendition of the game! I was amazed how well and quick (and easy) it plays! I think this is got to be one of the BEST/quickest little war campaign games to date- NICE JOB Andrew! The artwork and film/scene pics and quotes on the cards captures the feel of the epic Battle of Thermopylae depicted in "300". Oh- and the 17-Adult "rating" on the game reminded me of going to the movies-clever!!!

Quality is all over the map, but game-play is aces. There's luck in both the dice and card draw, but you play the game for the narrative you'll create.

A fun 'lite' wargame that I enjoyed playing with my boys (ages 9 & 10). Especially nice that 3 (and 4 even) player rules are included so that we could all enjoy the game together. Seemed like victory was hard to obtain for the Spartans, one of us got to 35 of the needed 50 points for the win before "time" ran out. Will try it again soon, I'm sure.

Tried again and got a Spartan win with 2 turns remaining. Took a different tactical approach (bringing Leonidas out of the Hot Gates and filling up his battle space with 3 additional Spartans due to card play). We had a great time.

5/12/2008: First play with my wife, who was the person I most had in mind when I bought the game. We both agree it is a fun, easy to learn game. It appears to deliver just the right amount of lighter-weight casual gameplay we were looking for, in a reasonable time frame and with loads of theme!

A surprising little gem which plays out with some strategy when using the variant card hand rules. This is an entry level wargame and would be pure Ameritrash if it had plastic bits. Lots of dice rolling. Follows the movie (the 2007, not the 1963 version) with the main characters present. The components are nice with a large mounted board, though the cards are a bit thin and would do well with sleeves.

Surprisingly good for a 30 minute wargame. I could see this getting old after multiple plays or so, but until then... Usually a movie franchise tie-in would be a kiss of death but not so in this case. One of the things that gives this a boost in the ratings is its rich theme. I'm sure that if I had seen the movie I'd probably give this a higher rating. There doesn't seem to be as much room for strategy as I'd like. I think that this would be a great game for playing with teenage boys.

I didn't watch the movie because I thought it was fascist propaganda. But that doesn't matter since I'm rating the game here. This is a simple wargame which is definitely luck heavy. However, it is also very thematic and this makes the game shine. Personally I would prefer historical artwork instead of bare breasted Spartans fighting in thongs, but the game is so much more fun when speaking and visualizing the movie quotes while playing a card. If every eurogame out there was replaced by a games base on an action movie, I think the gaming world would be a better place.

FAST-PACED AND EFFICIENT HACK-FEST.

Very few people will have come knocking on the spiked gate of 300: The boardgame for an accurate game depiction of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. If they do, they will inevitably be disappointed; they'll have to spy elsewhere for a more faithful recreation of one of history's most famous last stands against overwhelming hordes - because this game is dripping with atmosphere dragged from the much hated/loved Hollywood movie. BTW, I fall solidly on the side of those in love with the film's aesthetic. In fact, I defy anyone not to be mesmerised by the painting-like look to some of the scenes; the galleys gripped by a storm-tossed sea, and the virgin seer writhing amidst ghostly smoke, spring to mind. Obviously the Matrix-styled melee scenes, and the videogame boss structure to the encounters, draw in a certain rapturous crowd, but that shouldn't repel the masses from seeing the artistry of the film...
I digress. I love the film.
So what do I think of this board and counters rendition of a digital masterpiece?
Awesome!

For your gold, you get a huge board, depicting the Hot Gates and the seafront, that is as utilitarian as El Grande or Carcassone the Castle, with a score track about the board's perimeter. There are no plastic Spartans. Or Persians. This is not a bad thing as I think it would cheapen the effort here. The forces are all depicted on circular card counters - with movie stills illustrating the magnicent, masked Persian warriors, Spartans, etc. Double sided, the counters must be flipped to indicate wounding or blood-splattered death; this is why including models would have been a tragedy - unless they featured Heroclix-type bases, I suppose.

The rules are clear and simple: a strength. The hunchback making his miserable way along a 6-space goatpath is the game's countdown timer. Cardplay - inspired by filmic events and bearing laconic quotes - also interupts the game's simple phases in powerful outcome-altering ways.
Like most combat heavy games, 300 features huge amounts of dice rolling, but, with card use, and effective force management, you can limit poor results; this is what raises the game above the level of Risk. Huge swathes of Persians must be dismembered for the Spartans to advance, so you really do have to hack and slash your way through piles of enemy counters.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen an uber-Persian counter for the sword-armed monster (expansion material?). I would also have liked an identical set of black dice included for the Persians to toss across the battlefield (I remedied this with spare dice of my own anyhow). But these are barely flesh wounds on the Spartan King.

KING LEONIDAS:

1. Quick gameplay.
2. Brilliant theme.
3. Simple setup.
4. Plenty of carnage.
5. Closely-matched gameplay

GOD-KING XERXES:

1. Functional board.
2. Dicefest.
3. Not enough dice for fest.
4. Slightly tricky card rulings (well, for my dad).

300 is deceptive. It appears low brow gaming, a quick tie-in. But do not let the Persian wizards misdirect you, 300 is a quick-fire experience that plays well, is a huge amount of fun, and features strategic layers not immediately apparent on your first play or two.
This is the best film-to-boardgame I've played.

Extremely fast game! Great fun to toss a bunch of dice around and see the body count rise. It's a must the Spartans get out of the Hot Gates in order to score those Glory Points. Great game that will have you spouting lines from the movies as you play.

Violent and fast game of the movie, fun with a quick play time, in my experience very hard for the persians to win, really good filler game as so quick to play, easy to teach too, the componants are good (though cards could have been of better quality) but teh board seems unecessarily big to me *shrugs* oh well minor niggles on a likable game

A strange idea for a game. Two armies bunch up against each other in a narrow canyon. If you like moving around, you'll hate this. Mostly it's about the Spartan player deciding it's worth the point risk to push forward, while the Persian player must make crucial decsions about how they recirculate their slain pieces into the back ranks. Card play is the great equalizer. A unique diversion, that's for sure. I left my copy in the trunk of my car overnight and afterwards the board warped something fierce.

This is a 'filler' war themed game. If you liked the film you're probably going to like this ... it's not very 'realistic' but then again nor was the film

Spartans have to slaughter 100 glory points of Persians before they get outflanked - so definitely on a clock to get it done. Persians have to keep throwing troops forward. Spartans get bonus points for advancing, but it's a big risk as come out from the hot gates and the Persians can bring all their troops to bear.

Cards add variety. It's fast, it's brutal, I like it ... Age rating of 17+ is ludicrous, my 9 year old plays this with no problem at all.

This is a surprisingly enjoyable "beer and pretzels" game. I never really thought that a good game could be made of Thermopylae even if the movie upon which it is based takes A LOT of liberties with the underlying history. (The Greek force at the battle was several thousand strong.)

I like the way the designer (Andrew Parks) kept it simple without making this into a typically lame board game version of a movie. As many others have noted, it cleverly captures the theme, but movement and battle are very straightforward, just as in the movie, so the theme comes through. At the same time, it doesn't try to be more than it is. Curiously, rated 'age 17' on the box; I'd rated it for ages 10+, although the makers made an ill-advised move of having some cuss words printed on some of the cards--which in my case forced me to affix post-it notes over the swear words with 'clean' alternative words in my own handwriting, so that I could play it with my 10-year-old (2009). Purchased used, April 2009. My son Trevor rated it a 10 when he was 10 years old (10-27-09).

Very limited decissions (especially for the Persian player) and quite lucky with card draws and dice-rolling dictating almost everything that happens in the game. BUT it plays very quickly (30 minutes tops) and the pure carnage makes up for the deficites. If you like games where lots of pieces get destroyed every single turn, you should check this one out.

Simple enough rules, pretty good connection to the theme. The balance seems about right. Components are questionable. Gameplay kind of feels like you are just on a train heading to nowhere. Nothing can really affect what you, and your fellow players role with the dice. I highly recommend you play with the more card variant.

Components are decent (OK, the card stock could be better) on this one and is well thought out.

In this game, the Spartans have early advantage, which quickly turns to Persia. In two games, I was able to win one (both as Sparta), but not able to push the Persians completely back to their camp in completion. I really like this game.

I'd really like to try it with 3-4 players, too.

300: The Board game is a clear example that if movie marketing organizations are serious about making a board game adaption of a film then they need to get a skilled designer such as Andrew Parks on board. 300 can be a very fun game at first but on repeated plays it can grow stale. Best used as a filler, and still better than most movie-licensed games.

Not a bad little game although I'd say it was a bit simplistic. Luck is huge in this one.

You get a massive board that is hardly used at all, cards that are a bit thin, and a bunch of tokens.

I'd play it if asked, but I'd not like to own it again.
