Under-rated, strategic level political/military game that captures the flavor of prewar diplomacy. Short rules and playing time are a big plus. By using different objective cards for each player the variations are endless. This remains one of my favorite multiplayer games even after all these years.

An excellent game, even considering the graphics are kind of blah. It's fun, fast and in spite of what some of the nay-sayers have posted about it, not complex (it's two pages of rules!) and not boring. If you feel that way, you're missing something. The game does a great job of emphasizing the various Euro nations' territorial ambitions in the years leading up to WWII. Some say it's unblanced in favor of the Germans; I would repsond by saying that you need to work on your diplomacy skills to get the other players to help you contian Germany. Virtually every game of this that we play goes right down to the wire - if you've got players that understand how the game is supposed to be played. We also found that an especially challenging way to play was to have all the players secretly write down their PF placement, then reveal them and place simaltaneously; this tends to further balance the game, at least in our experience.

I remember, back in the 70's, my wargame friends detested this game. I felt it was a good example of Dunnigan's ability to break new ground beyond conventional hex grid designs.

It is not very competitive or balanced but that is not the point. The point is to demonstrate the international tension that occured prior to WWII. His system of political factor allocation and victory objectives was a good foundation for simulation of political and social interactions. The concept could have been used to create better and more complex games, had not this game been met with such thunderous disinterest.

It's a quick game with essentially only 1 or 2 pages of rules. I liked it. I think you could get some Eurogamers to play this one. It only took about 90 minutes, although you might be able to play it in about half that time. I looks like you basically need exactly 5 players, but perhaps it might work okay with only 4 or even 3 players and possibly some house rules. It's similar to SPI's Spies in complexity. It might not hold up to repeated game plays though, but it's pretty decent for an older game.

The first "major" game my wife joined in. I have played the main scenario several times. The game could get repetitive with the same group, but there are four variant scenarios which help spice that up and prevent it. I really enjoy this one and think it does a good job of capturing the history and politics of the age.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

Like many a war gamer, I ignored this back in the day, dismissing it as too light in an era that demanded complex rules, tons of chits, and a focus on detailed technical simulation.

My bad - turns out it's an excellent game with a light but very cleverly designed ruleset, and a focus on negotiation that fits the theme very well.

It's asymmetric which I always enjoy, and while the alliances tend to form along historical lines there's enough antipathy that towards the end the most unlikely and unholy of alliances can emerge. The US is perhaps the least likely to win but conversely the most fun to play, as FDR has to keep his tongue wagging and a ton of plates spinning at once to even come close to a win.

I've by no means exhausted the historical scenario but am already looking forward to trying out the alt-history scenarios, especially the ones that give the US more teeth.

You have to play 5 games in a match format because the powers are really not that balanced. Since a game rarely lasts more than 30 minutes, we usually play that way.

I know a lot of people do not like this game, but I do enjoy playing it from time to time. The mechanics are as simple as Diplomacy, but unlike Diplomacy there are prearranged goals (unless you use the variant rules.) I know some who do not like the diplomacy "combat" table, but I do since sometimes it is a little luck or the little things that can make the difference.

Interesting pre-WWII diplomacy/area-control game that foretold the coming wave of Eurogames. The player-powers are not balanced, however, so some players may well have much less fun (less to do) than others...
