The most realsitic and deadly detailed simulation on the WW2. A legendary Operational Combat Series is born. The scenarios variety can offer you a lifetime enjoyment of the game as you will never have the time to play them all.

One of my favourite games. Relatively simple to play once you get to grips with the OCS, and challenging for both sides.

Great for learning how to conduct an operations in the OCS...the germans are overpowered so are fun to 'drive around the board overrunning Russians'...

I cut my OCS teeth on GBI. When I finally got my copy of GBII, nearly all my problems with the GBI rules (some of which I didn't even know I had!) had been addressed. So far I have been solitairing the Typhoon opening small scenarios for time and space reasons. The only reason I don't give this the full '10' is that it lacks enough small scenarios...

We had the chance to play it with teams.
This increases the realism a little more.
Unfortunately we played with the unfinished rules 1.0 and this slowed the game.
The game deserves a second try with the last version of the rules.

A brilliant but slightly flawed initiation of the OCS series. The two phased turns were initially quite confusing to me because they were so new to what I was accustomed to. The idea of supply counters on board for subsistence was also a great idea, he clearly understood the three most important commodities in WWII logistics were food, fuel and ammunition (construction & barrier materials was the other big one, although not as important was actually greater than food by total weight). The problem was gamers couldn't handle all the counter counting, which is a shame, it was more accurate than the current trace system. The air rules have continued to go through one revision after another though all the way up to 4.0, he just can't seem to get them right I guess.

This was the first edition. MArreed with a clumsy supply system, strange reserve and air rule.
The OCS 2.0 shines. try that one and Guderian Blitzkrieg II. It is worth the time. Since time seems to fly with these games.

See "Enemy at the Gates". GB has bee re-done, and the new version is over the top in its monster-gameness, which is why it only rates a 7. Some play balance issues have been noted over at consimworld. Best to play this one with teams of 3 or 4.

A great beginning to a great system (OCS). This would have been a 9 or 10 when first released -- GBII gets that score now. GBII works out all the kinks. Highly praised when it came out and still a great game.

A very good game to play on solitaire!

The situation in the begin of the campaign isn't interresting for the Russian player, who's role is to retreat in good order.

Though there is quite an amount of Air units, it is still playable as an introduction game to OCS.

When played with the upgraded counters from The Gamers to the V2 rules and the new OB provided until the end of January 42, the game is much more interesting for 2 players.

A good game worth playing before looking at it's big brother GBII!

Only played Solitaire

Caveats

I am using the version 2.0 rules, I have the errata/upgrade counters for 2.0

I have played two scenarios, one was the Borodino 41 and the other was the Orel one. I have played both of them 3 times. It was mainly to get used to the rules. I have never used, or even read the fully the 1.0 rules. But I had to adjust the turn length as instead of two player phases per turn under 1.0 you need to double the number of turns under 2.0. Also the supply points that are allocated has to be amended for the new supply rules. That is in the update article.

Okay, how does it play. pretty well. I have played OCS Tunisia and that prompted me to sell my OCS games, (DAK2, Burma, Baltic Gap and Tunisia). Earlier this year I picked up a second hand copy of GB as it was just too cheap to pass up and I had recently played SPI Typhoon and GMT's Typhoon and wanted to compare maps and OOB for this one. Then I got a copy of the ver 2.0 rules and read them and liked them so wanted to give it a spin. I certainly liked it. I've since gone out and got two more games that were designed under 2.0.

Original edition of this game is now quite dated. Still an interesting look at a very, very, one-sided situation. More work to play than more current OCS editions because of the more involved supply rules. Still a reasonable system.

The game that brought you the Operational Combat Series. Long since superseded, but worth getting if you want to break into the system and can get it cheap!

No reason to get this game anymore. It's not compatible, rules-wise, with any of the other OCS games and can't be easily upgraded.

Man, that map mistake Essig made, putting an extra rail line in that becomes a "highway to Moscow," ruined the game. Look at GMT's Typhoon or GB II, the railway magically vanishes. Has to be one of the biggest boners in wargaming design.
