One of the best Napoleonic games out there, it captures the feel and has extremely inventive game mechanics. Movement is by chit draw, giving the battle a "herky-jerky" feel that puts one on edge. This captures the fluid situation as armies converge on each other. Kevin Zucker makes impressive designs, and this is one of his best efforts. One problem, the Old Guard is too strong, so check errata at OSG.

Part of Kevin Zucker's superb DAYS-series depicting the French forces on their way to Brussels to change the political outcome of the Vienna Congress. Napoleon wanted the Grande Armee to move fast (between the Prussian and Allied forces) and hit hard (first the Prussians then the Allied). The outcome is history: The famous battle of Waterloo/ La Belle Alliance/ Mont St. John...

Kevin Zucker gives you the possibility to try it out. Will Napoleon succeed with his strategic plan?

Napoleonic Warfare on operational level (regimental/brigade-size).

A must for all the Napoleon-Grognards

Well, I'm afraid it'll have to wait. Whatever it was, I'm sure it was better than my plan to get out of this by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman round here?

Being interested in the campaign certainly helps, but this is also a good game supported by one of the best chit-pull mechanics I've yet seen. Decisions are always tense for both players, which is a good sign. Very underrated, although I think the map is a bit of an eye-sore.

I traded this away and now I wish I had not.

Lot's of fun. I like that part of the chrome is optional. I also like the very functional map with hexes larger than usual and the reinforcements entry points.

This could be a very good game, but :
Rules need to be cleaned up. Too much rules which are unclear and which aren't solved by errata.
Not enough markers(hidden markers, out of command markers) in the box.

The game is interesting, particularly as no French troops start on the map.

Personally, I found the map very disappointing, particularly when compared to earlier maps from OSG.

A good game overall, an evolution of the original Napoleon's Last Battles system. Even with several editions of the rules, though, there are portions that are unclear and some systems that are clunky and hard to implement cleanly.

The basics of the Days system are here and they make it a game easy to learn and play. There are some differences, like the artillery units, making it a bit closer to the Lost Battles system, and with movement allowance chits. There are some optional rules about cavalry, élan etc...
The sequence of a game turn is quite easy to learn and develops smoothly. The rules are not much tweaky but I prefer to use a home-made flow chart. There is no real complexity and playing Last Days of the Grande Armée is a great gaming experience.

Played using the 1.1 version rules.

We found that using the movement chits tended to make movement rates too slow to replicate actual historical movement. All of the units could not make it to their historical sites if they tried. Was this play-tested? OK, maybe that in itself doesn't break a potentially fun game but it is strange.

The in and out of command status phase was a lot of fiddly work for little real use since all out of command units can move anyway. I am guessing it works this way since the counter values are too low to use the roll for command of the later 1809 game without needing to make all new counters. I was thinking of using a D4 instead.

The Old Guard taking no losses in exchange felt akin to having a Tiger battalion moving across the map.

As far as I'm concerned the rules have a serious flaw regarding the Guard and exchange combat results. In my first game I literally watched the entire Prussian army disappear after an exchange result. That can be fixed, but even beyond that it didn't seem to work well. We put the game away at that point.

The main appeal for this very low operational scale is the chance for some semi-tactical play since battles cover multiple turns and hexes, but the system ends up historically absurd. And it looked so nice. The game's own historical setup for the Waterloo scenario could never be an outcome of a move in this game, it would be illegal! In battles, units and leaders just run hither and thither blindly. Throwback to the 70s; will bear some resemblance to the campaign if you never come closer to the table than arm's length..
