I rated this a 10 based on when it was released and what it did for the hobby. It's still a damn fine game and one that I still play occasionally (owed it for at least 25 years)

Not many games have the reply value this does. It's very playable, I think it helps with it being a meeting engagement that then builds up.

If you see a copy buy it

If there was a wargame that could be voted best in the 20th century, this would be it. If you like competitive bidding for victory points, try this one out. No game will be the same, despite the relativly short learning curve. Plays fair in solitare also. There is talk of a remake so keep your fingers crossed for improvements graphically and scenarios too who knows?

My favorite wargame of all time. As the Germans, you feel omnipotent -- for awhile. Can you keep your bright & shiny Panzer divisions blasting across the map, or will you reach too far and get bogged down? On the flip side, where do you make a stand? And, capping it all off -- where are your _good_ troops!

The game system that started it all. It has more children than any other wargame system. The concept of untried units is now universal, and its move-fight-move sequence is a standard as well. The concept of Soviet HQs does show some age, but it is still one of the most enjoyable games I have played.

Just a great, fun game. I think the first game to use counters with unknown comabt values. Can be very tense for both players. Always the chance for a German breakout or a Soviet counter attack. FUN!

Rules are like glass.

To rate this game a 1 is to dislike fun.

I only recently played this game and enjoyed it very much. It's a classic wargame with fairly traditional mechanisms that are used for excellent effect. Both sides are tense to play, even if the Soviets are mainly on the defensive. Highly recommended. L2 will publish the 3rd edition in the near future, with much improved graphics.

A classic and deservedly so, fast moving, tense with a good simple rule system. Untried units for the Soviets mean that there's often a nasty shock for someone when combat is joined. Open situation gives both players plenty to do.

One of the best SPI games ever. Play it, you'll love it. (Unless you're just a 'Euro' sissy.) The Russian side is actually fun to play. Feeding more and more units against the Panzers until they're stuck like flypaper as more and more of the stronger Russian units get into the stacks and survive.
Certainly playable solitaire.

Superb -- untried units (oh, no, a 0-0-6!), overruns, other options make this eminently replayable. Holds up well. Functional, tidy, workmanlike graphics, but OK in the visual department too (compare to some of the recent offenses to the eye, either mind-numbingly dull or mind-bendingly garish).

Great for playing solitaire. Love this type game, meeting engagement. Don't you just love getting a few reinforcements. What a great idea, the untried units. I have the Avalon Hill version. Probably the best IMHO. excellent condition. punched and verified complete.

What a simple system, and what a operational tense game it is. So far, this game is one of the best eastern front game.

Fantastic 2 player game that exciting to play either side. Excellent solitaire game that is so elegantly done, that replay ability is huge.

This is one game that keeps you holding your breath to the very last turn.

No other game currently in print has kept me so tense throughout.

One of my all-time favorites from my wargaming days as a kid. I almost always got to play the Russians, as my other wargaming buddies did NOT like playing that side. The hidden unit strength of the Russian troops always caused a few surprises in each game.

I played the S&T version a few times and really had fun with this one. Very simple rules, but a lot of replay possibilities. Both sides have advantages and disadvantages. Untried units was a great innovation, which adds to the solitarie playability. Many of these old S&T games are classics, and this is one of them.

My first wargame. This is what started it all for me, I still have my original copy, and a spare. I played it 100 times solitaire before I ever got to play it ftf. Still love it.

Good system. Untried units make for good solitare play and allow you to experience the feelings of a commander when he first commits his troops to battle, not entirely knowing what he is up against. A classic.

All time classic. Unknown units. Just won with the Russians by the skin of my teeth using some of the 0-0 units that were brought back into play and filled the gaps in the line. If only the German player would have figured it out a little sooner!

Still a great game after all this time. The untried Russian units give the game very good replay value and there are numerous strategies for both sides to explore. My only complaint are the really sticky ZOCs and it's difficult to disengage to strike elsewhere. It would be nice to see this game get a graphics upgrade someday.
