The most beautiful of the Games Workshop boardgames, hiding a slick, fast-playing game system. The Tyranids are under the gun here, more so than their Eldar victims. Should the Tyranid's swarming assault on board the Iyanden Craftworld bog down, the Eldar will quickly counterattack and drive the Tyranids back into space. This forces the Tyranids to fight their way through the guns of the Eldar fleet once more, taking huge casualties, and possibly causing the Hive Mind to call off the assault. A keeper.

As grey traces of dawn tinge the eastern sky, the three travellers, men of Willowdale, emerge from the forest's shadow. Fording the river, they turn south, journeying into the dark and forbidding lands of The Necromancer...

As a onetime WH40K fanatic, I really like this one. The longer the game goes, the better chance the Tyranid player has to overrun the Craftworld. It positively drips atmosphere.

Very balanced two person strategy wargame with great looking pieces. I think Jervis Johnson did a great job on the wargames series and I don't believe they had enough exposure. If GW would try and focus more on board games and not just their "3 big ones" there is so much potential for great games from the designers that work for them.

Update - May,2010. With the release of FFG's Horus Heresy and more old GW games being redeveloped by them GW doesn't need to focus on anything but their 3 big ones. Other companies are helping them with exposure and they'll never need to design new games at this rate.
I really look forward to a remake of this game though I do feel it is my favorite out of the three.

Bit random, especially the end and what forces you pull as the Tyranids. But overall a great 2 player asymetrical introductory conflict game.

One of my GW favourites.

Randomness of Tyranid forces/game end aside (the game doesn't really start until the Tyranid player gets a high roll), it's a solid, entertaining two-payer game.

Terrific, playable low complexity wargame featuring a battle aboard a ship in space. One player takes the role of the space elves, defending their ship from the swarm of bug invaders. Very clean game with some good mechanics including hidden info and variable endgame. Worth picking up.

A very fun dicefest leading to the overrun of an Eldar Craftworld by the Tyranids. Thematically its great, I love the feel of the game. There are many different counters, and the board looks great (although small), and the combat is simple.

The one part that struck me as very odd was the ending condition for the game (if a particular double is rolled, the game ends). The variance in the game time is extremely high and so is the game experience. Aside from that, it is pretty demoralising for the Eldar player, because there isn't a way to win, you are merely trying to halt the flow of the Tyranid's advance.

One of three "chit" games produced by Games Workshop. This was their best of the series and was enjoyable to play. Given the randomness of reinforcements and some alternating tactics the replay is moderate.

Although the game feels very random (e.g. if it ends early due to the Tyranid player rolling double in his/her reinforcement phase, it is possible that not a single boarding action takes place!), it can be VERY engrossing when the dice rolls are not too extreme. The low complexity means that it is easy to explain and that downtime is kept to a minimum for this type of game. Love the board and the oversized counters: They keep things clear under all circumstances.

Marvellous asymmetric game.

Time has wearied me on this one, though. I still like the asymmetry, and the tension of fighting against the horde, but the CRT randomness now gives me pause. Downgraded a notch on the rating from fifteen years ago :-)

A nice game, lots of dice rolling, I have played this with Robert my middle son quite a few times in the past and he tended to beat me. It has some nice mechanisms which fit around the theme quite nicely, the special powers of the Eldar ship against the unending hordes attacking. The system works well and is a nicely themed 2 player game which plays in about 45 minutes.

Update. Amazing game saw the Tyranids at the max 89 units. Eldar still won 8-5 with only 8 units left. Hive mind is deadly but Avatar plus Wraithguard prevailed. Eldar ships wiped out.

Bought a used copy on Ebay UK. Seemed it had got lost in the mail, ut it turned up after two weeks. Yay! Love the early 90´s GW design. Easy to get in to, great atmosphere and just sheer fun. Recommended for 40k-fans.

A fun little two player asymmetrical siege game. It does the never stopping hoard well and I love the Warhammer 40k theme. The game has old school wargame roots like ratio tables so that does date it a bit as far as design goes. A solid game though just doesn't get table time due to the two player restriction which is my biggest hurdle in gaming these days.

This is actually surprisingly good. I sold The Awful Green Things from Outer Space because I found it all came down to a random draw of weapon chits. This fills the same slot - a fast 2 player light wargame, which happens to have a space theme. This has considerable randomness, but enough going on and a short play time to make it fun.

Pretty good fun if you're into Warhammer 40k, 'Nids and Eldar. An unusual victory point/game length system - the game is random length, but the victory point system means the 'nid player has to destroy more of the craftworld the longer the game goes on. Seems pretty balanced.

GW's foray into board games as a way of selling people on their cool background for Warhammer 40k were a bit simplistic and dominated by luck (much like their minis games) but all in all, it's pretty good. This two player game pits space elves against invading alien hive fleet... an innovative scoring system and fantastic background make it worth trying.

Enjoyable game even though I'm not a big fan of the Eldar. The best strategy for the Tyranids is to Horde their forces before assaulting the Eldar Craftworld; otherwise the Tyranids are typically cut down to pieces by the Eldar starships and plasma missiles.

Haven't played since I was about 14. Not bad for a Games Workshop counter game: however, not brilliant either. Once the Eldar player has worked out the best defensive strategy (which involves two fleet stacks and constantly reinforcing the fleet to destroy the Tyranids in space) it's all down to the luck of the dice. The random end to the Tyranid assault can make for a tense game; equally, it means that it's unbalanced most of the time.

Although this game's charm relies on your interest in Warhammer 40,000 and military board games, it does do a better job of being innovative than either of its two sister games, Battle for Armageddon and Horus Heresy.

Solid game that successfully captures the feeling of a massive alien assault on an Eldar Craftworld. One caveat with the game is that the Tyranid player's success is completely determined by die rolls, and it tends to be feast or famine. Of course, how a Tyranid player reacts to the dice requires a bit of strategy, but it feels unfair that one player has to labor almost completely under that most tyrannical of puppet masters, Lady Fortune.
