Games Workshop boardgame on the pivotal battle of the Warhammer 40000 universe. Excellent game components and production values. I've never seen this game be a complete walk-over for either side.
If it is possible, get the White Dwarf variant that deals with the Emperor's final assault on Horus' orbiting battlebarge; it's a more realistic handling of the climactic battle of the Universe.

I love the 40k-Background, so this is a real winner for me. The mechanics are backdated of course, but the fun is in the tight atmosphere!

Update December 13. 2009:

Now waiting impatiently for the new FFG version!!!

A lot of chrome for this little dicey jewel.
If you love the W40k universe you'll love this.
Counters will stop being cardboard and will spring to life, assaulting walls, penetrating viciously defended citadels, moving through barren wastelands to the heart of the Empire.

I love the atmosphere of it. I will play again. Soon.

A more complex version of the "Armageddon" mechanic made this game even more random in its outcome despite still being lost of fun trying to defend or kill the emperor.

Rather more static than Battle For Armageddon - I don't remember there being a late imperial counterattack here as there was in the earlier game, with the consequence that the Imperial player often is just sitting there and taking it.

Raised it one point recently after playing the FFG design in appreciation of (1) how much cleaner a design this is and (2) how many more things happen during play.

This has some replayability that the other games in this series lack. Very fun two player game. The aesthetics make it much easier to get people to play, and for the type of game it is, that's a factor.

As a Warhammer 40K fan this is a must for my collection. A lot of sudden and random events can end the game early regardless of strategic military situation; this isn't a problem for me personally, but it can be off-putting for some players.

A really tense little game that's a lot better than it appears to be. The bad guy has a lot of toys to work with, but a ticking clock and inability to bring down as many of the units as he needs really make things tense.
The good guy has to fight a slow defensive war, hoping to slow down the bad guy enough to win. Much better than the other two games I've seen in the series.

Another great playing and looking 2 person strategy wargame. Jervis Johnson did a fantastic job on this and the other War games series that GW breifly produced. Damn I wish that company would get back to actually making more games rather then just updates to their 3 main miniature games.

Best in the series. Had some great games, always played it light (often with random deployment) and always with the White Dwarf 164 Warmaster add-on. Often very funny/silly results. No idea how it plays as a serious wargame!

Best of GW boardgames. Bit of advice, don't use the example set up if you're the Chaos player. Instead land your Marines on top of the Defence Lasers and use Horus and his Sons of Horus on the main map.

This game's charm relies on your interest in Warhammer 40,000 and military board games. Without these things you will find little new or engaging. The same can be said for both Battle for Armageddon and Horus Heresy.

This game is rather easy and fun but have some major flaws, like for example that you can win in the first round when you are chaos by bombing the imperial palace and get a lucky hit on the emperor. So, the theme is cool but you should really agree on some house rules to make it a more well balanced game.

Updated 100107: I have now sold this game just before christmas to a friend. So will probably play it with him once in a while.
