How can you get such bad poker hands playing this game?

I had the chance to check out this game last week with a group of friends, 6 of us to be exact. As with most games, the first was game was mainly a learning game, but we quickly picked up the concept and the games just flew. Soon 2 of the players had left, but the remaining 4 continued to play and just that minor change in player numbers dramatically changed the mechanics of the game. It seemed a bit easier with 6 players in the sense that you got to see more of the cards and was almost guaranteed a hand by the end of the scoring. When it broke down to 4 of us, there seemed to be more a challenge in getting those big hands or even getting a hand period. I'd recommend playing with 4 players, the games are quicker and the challenge and analysis gets more interesting since its also a little easier to keep track of what people are going for and to try to stop them without giving away what you're building for. Interesting game that quite simply uses a deck of stylized cards with a few other custom decks of cards and some poker knowledge to make a pretty fun and addictive game.

Demoed at Origins 2008. Nice poker hand based card game where you buy the cards you need. Only little drawback is the need for a tie-breaker, so they rank the suits which isn't a pure poker idea, but ok for this game.

At one time, I didn't really like Power Grid so Ted made my piece a Power Grid piece.

Disclaimer: I playtest a lot of Ted's games, and I got a copy of this for free.

This is a pretty good game, similar to For Sale without being duplicative. I don't want to play all the time, but I will occasionally suggest that we play it.

Poker enthusiats will love this game. for others, it will probably be a take it or leave it kind of thing. I find the bidding aspect to get playing cards to make the best poker hand very interesting, so it's a solid 7 for me. Now I just have to get it to the table again...

Fun game similar in feel to For Sale. Deeper decisions in my opinion, and lots of tension in the card selection. Fun to yell at the person that takes "your" card as well!

Light, math-y card game. I like it. But a friend's comment was great: "They took the best part of poker... and removed it."

A decent bidding-to-take-cards poker game. Enjoyable and quick, with a bit of bluffing going on.

Fast and engaging - will appeal to anyone with a poker background. I suggest you eliminate the side bets as they add nothing to the game and are worth nearly as much in scoring as the high hand.

--Jan2008-- Played a mockup of the currently-printing version. It's quite cool - better, in fact, than I had assumed when I first saw the BGN note about it going to print. I'm not completely convinced that (at least with 4 players or fewer) the all-Flush strategy isn't dominating; but I could easily believe that things become more interesting with 5 players.

Cute card game. I don't think the risk of going for pairs is worth it. Seems like the better option is going for flushes with cards that potentially connect.

I'm not opposed to playing it again, but wouldn't ever request to play it. For a game of trading cards to get other cards to score points, I like Money! and Weinhändler a lot better. Mostly for the fact that the cards in those other games cycle back in to the play area. So if someone grabbed a card I need, then it can come back and I have the chance to get it again. In this game, if 9-9-9 comes up in the center of the table, then three or four-of-a-kind is out of the question for that round because no one will be able to collect them all in to the same hand. And with one of the cards in the center being played face down, you don't know if the "good" hand your building towards is impossible or not. You might have to fall back on your lower scoring backup hand. Or, maybe that card you needed already went though the pile but you didn't notice it on the first round because it wasn't the card you were looking for at the time. So, to stop THAT situation from happening to you, you'll have to memorize the seen or not seen for all 52 cards and then again with the face down cards you'll miss out on some anyway. All this really makes me not care about my fate in the game and then I start questioning why I should play it.

This is a poker game for people that don't really play poker. It is more about blind bidding and drafting your hand. It is a once a year kind of game for me.
