This is one of the best games I have ever played. Very rarely does a game impress me enough to get multiple plays right out of the box, but we played this 5 times the first day. Unbelievably good game and really high quality for a self-published affair.

UPDATE - I increased my rating to a 10 on 2-9-08. I love this game and I find myself constantly wanting to play it. A glowing review will be coming soon.

After 10+ plays I upped this to a 10. Quick game, yet packed with decisions and AY and YES moments. No downtime. Quick to set up and clean up.

Perfect game for 2 or 3 players.

It was my life, like all lives, mysterious and irrevocable and sacred. So very close, so very present, so very belonging to me. How wild it was to let it be.

S&S is one of my favorite games. I rate it a 10, as relative to its genre, I'd rather play this. Yes, it's light but the strategy is surprisingly deep. It's a game similar to For Sale in that there are two phases. You collect cards in each phase but the first acquisition phase merely sets you up for the auction where most of the fun happens.

In the auction, you pay for suit cards with gold but pay for gold cards with (any) cards played face down so people don't know what you're discarding. You can openly collect a majority of cards in a suit but then shave them down secretly knowing that everyone else has abandoned that category as "lost" to you. I've shaved cards down in the auction phase from 6 points to 1 (and won) because everyone knew I had a lot of cards and stopped competing with me. I thought you had a lot of that?! Well, I DID... You need to bid gold cards for gold cards just to keep others from getting cheap gold and to make them think you have more gold than you really do.

There's a lot of psychological play in convincing others to back off because you have something wrapped up and to being sneaky about pursuing a category. Trying to predict who is collecting which suits is not always obvious and you have to mess with other players in the auction to the point of sometimes getting stuck with stuff that you were just trying to bid up.

Bought on recommendation by Nick @ Shire Games. Great game with a fresh outlook of collecting sets. Odd theme. Put bishops in the auction pile and make sure you win them when you've committed to one or two sets. Makes a huge difference.

Here's a BGG rarity, a game that actually lives up to the hype. It has a very unique drafting mechanism tied to an equally unique set collection mechanism. The cards you are trying to collect are a bit of a moving target, because the other players are not only competing for the same sets, but also directly controlling the value of each set for the end game scoring. It ends up being a very cool interlocking puzzle with multiple approaches to winning. Do I focus on driving the value down on a color I am weak in? Do I let my opponent control the market values and hope his decisions telegraph his intentions, so that I can counter them? The depth of the game is impressive, considering I can teach someone to play in literally five minutes.

This is probably going to creep into my Top 10, if I ever manage to track down a copy. A new printing is supposed to be coming down the pike, so hopefully I can finally snag one.

Let me be absolutely clear about this--we've been playing Scripts and Scribes since its initial VHS box release--and we still play this at almost every other weekly game night...that's what 5 or 6 years, in a game group that is made up of hard-core, card game players, and boardgamers who thrive on playing a different game every week. It is THAT good.

________________

Updated to a 10. I honestly think this is quite possibly our most turned-to filler/short game. It plays FANTASICALLY with 2, 3 or 4 players--not many games can acheive that tricky balance. Fewer players is a slightly faster game, but at every level the game holds fun and tricky decisions that never sink to AP, because while tricky and hard to commit to, the decisions remain relatively simple, but rarely obvious.

This can be played with brnd new players, and they'll pick it up after a single run-through playing the two stages. Only thing to watch to clarify is that the Bishop must be played when "chosen," that it can never be held in-hand, even though it can be placed into the auction.

This is a solid addition to the drafting genre of card games. The less than perfect knowledge of the draft along with the ability to change values in the very streamlined scoring system makes it brilliant. This may well be waiting to grow into a 10, and it is certainly a filler-length which will always be requested.

This is the absolute, perfect filler-length 10.
We've now been playing it for a few years, and the desire to play it as a game night closer or a quick game with any number of players, 2,3,4 has not diminished AT ALL.

This game uses a clever assign / auction mechanic that adds a unique twist to set collection. I was concerned at first that the auction would not be exciting with only two people; however, this was not the case. The limited resources along with the angst of the unknown add tension to the auction that makes each one meaningful. Assigning cards to the three different piles and the ability to manipulate the VPs via the Bishops (Cookie Jar) allows for some subtle bluffing techniques. This is a great little game that plays fast. My wife and I played two games with rules explanation in less than 45 minutes.

The current availability of the game is a deterrent. It is currently out of print and copies are being offered at a high value. There is a reprint in the works that should be available soon. That should make this great game more affordable and more accessible.

After a handful of 2-player plays, I'm in love. The tension, the tough choices about which colors to keep, which colors to dump on, how much to bid, how to signal opponents to throw them off the scent of what you're doing...there's just so much good stuff going on here, and it all happens inside about 15 minutes.

Wow.

This is so much fun to play!We have only played it with 2 and can't wait to play it with more this coming week.

Unfortunately this is not to everybody's taste. . .

However the simplicity of this game is in complete contradiction to the angst players experience.

Scripts plays differently with however many players you introduce, but a common feeling through every game is.... AAAAGGHH! I don't want to give you that!!!
You never know the winner until the scoring stage.

Reminds of a pulsating economy fluctuating between spiralling inflation, when there is a lot of gold in hand and players pay over the odds for cards, and near bankruptcy near the end when 2 gold is a fortune!

Highly Addictive

Terrific fun and guarantees a load of laughs.

2p: 15 points up
3p: 11 points up
(a great way to make it more interesting)

An excellent game for 2-4 players. Scales really well between these numbers and is a blast to replay a few times in a row. Each game feels different due to random cards being removed each time, it's really interesting to bluff your way to victory in a category by one point, or improving a colour you have only a few of, to redirect player's attention from a colour you want to collect for cheap.

15-30m, 2-5 players. 20+ plays.

The ease of explanation of this game makes it the filler
of choice. Nobody I`ve taught this to dislikes the game.
Everybody wants to better their skills with a follow up game. Especially women find it interesting to play. Not
everybody likes the wargaming or fantasy theme exciting.
This can be played by young and old and all gender.

9/18/11--Took this on the cruise and we played at LEAST 5 games a day. It's so easy and so much fun. The cards are showing wear, but it doesn't seem to impact play. All 3 of us love love love this game!

FINALLY! I have this game in my hot little hands! And it IS different and it IS fun! This is right up there with Jaipur, I think, though I've only played 2 games so far. It will be better in the long run considering that it plays up to 4 while Jaipur only plays 2.
