this game has flaws no doubt. but if you get the right collection of balls and cards there is a very nice game here.

to get a nice set of cards buy the three figure packs. the 6 balls 8 card packs have terrible cards.

also i play with six marbles preside and forces and cards are drafted before each match.

Rating based on playing the game with children.

I can understand the novelty and attraction to this game. Regular CCGs like Pokemon seem pretty boring, but the gimmick here is pretty cool, Transformer like balls that pop out into robots when rolled correctly over a magnetic card.

The main problem I have with the game lies with all of the modifying cards. They made no sense to me whatsoever, and they didn't really seem very useful for the gameplay. Maybe if you had a large collection, but they seemed superfluous.

I guess another big problem I have is the collectible nature of the game. I guess you get to see one of the Bakugans when you're buying them, but still I think this type of model is unfair to both kids and parents and I would never encourage it.

Got roped into playing this with my son and it is actually a fun, light little game. Psuedo-collectable (you can pick the color of your marbles, but you'll never know what the "battle value" of the monster is til you open it), so that'll turn most folks around here off...but the little marble/monsters are neat and the game itself is streamlined, easy to learn/play, and will produce some ooo's and ahhh's when trying to capture a card. Biggest complaint is cost. You really need the battle board ($30) and at least one starter pack ($20) to play it the way it is meant to be played...pretty steep entry for a toy. Thought half-seriously about buying a couple boosters for myself after an evening of play. Give it a shot. Not many dexterity/marble/transformer hybrids out there.

Be sure to get the Battle Arena. The rules are quite a mashup, but one can work out acceptable house rules and the game becomes quite fun. Gift to Jedi; Dante; Jonah the Elder. Collection given to SAFE House.

Started with two battle packs which have 6 figures each. Then I started buying stuff. I mean a lot of stuff. My son now has probably close to 75
marbles... yikes.

The concept of Bakugan is amazing. I mean you have little plastic marbles which launch into a creature when its magnet hits a metallic card. Unfortunately as a game the rules are simple and often confusing. It is very hard to tell the different creatures apart in some situations. The starter sets have cards which don't gel with the creatures included. If the confusion was dispersed with a good faq Bakugan could potentially rock the gaming world (at least for young boys). So far we have a neat mechanic with a crazy simple game system that doesn't do it justice.

Still it is selling amazingly well througout the world right now. With the rules as written it will eventually flounder. A pity really. Bakugan has so much potential.

I have been in contact with Spin Master Toys to see if there is some way I can help... I guess we will see if they do get back to me.

The problem with Bakugan as a kids toy is that most of the time your marble doesn't open on a gate card. Part of this might be the skill of the child, but that isn't always the case... If more Gate cards were in the field this would be minimized. I dislike the new edition of the rules and the fact that many of the first edition cards are no longer compatible with the current edition of the game.

The eponymous battle balls are great, nearly-automatically transforming toys. The game that employs them is passable. I enjoy rolling marbles; however, many of these are designed with bumps and ridges that can steer them awry, which can be problematic, since you need to get the magnetic portion of the bakugan onto a [metal] gate card in order to attempt to claim the gate card. The real problem is that to enhance this simplistic play, there are effects on ability, gate, and battle gear cards that affect the strength of the respective battle balls. That can lead to a lot of adding in your head (or on paper, if you get desperate, I suppose). In theory, it makes the battle more interesting. In reality, if I pick stronger bakugan than you, you have to have amazing cards (or much, much better rolling skill) than I in order to beat me.

It is a better game than one would expect, having transforming toys as the "pawns", but I think I would have steered this collectible dexterity game in a different direction.

A simple game, except the construction of the Bakugan (balls) make them hard to aim. I haven't got any ability cards, which I think will make a real difference to game play. My major gripe would be the cost, 6 Bakugan and 6 gate cards (the minimum we needed to play) cost more than Doom:the boardgame, here in South Africa, which means I probably won't buy more of these, which is bad news for a game that, to me, relies on choosing the best combinations of cards and figures.

Another thing to be careful of is the vast numbers of fake Bakugan available.

Not a bad game of marbles to play with kids. The spring open monsters are very cool, although you'll occasionally get one that is a little tricky to properly reclose.

This is my sons; we played it as a game once. Sort o a combination of marbles and Pokemon. I like the clever mechanism that opens the Bakugan when it stops on a magnetic card. Shame it isn't that easy to get it to stop on one.

8 as a toy, 4 as a game.
My son has had some of these Bakugan for awhile and has enjoyed playing around with them -- today we decided to try to figure out the game. The rules are really flimsy, and after doing a little reading here, it appears that the publisher of this game has changed the rules since the game was initially released (HSP points? Can't find those anywhere on the card. Oh, they did away with those....). Some of the ability cards are also very confusing as to what kind of power they confer. I'm sure there's a game here somewhere, but so far we're having some trouble figuring it out. As far as we've been able to tell, if you have the Bakugan with the highest G points, they will almost invariably win. Maybe we just don't have enough action cards or something...
Cool idea for a toy -- the game seems to be slapped on as an afterthought. Pokemon CCG does it much better.

(2010-04-12) My daughter (7yro) enjoys Bakugan. A first, I thought the game was pretty cool, mainly because of toy aspects. Having marbles that pop open is a very clever idea!

Unfortunately, every time I play this game, I like it less and less. It's just annoying.

Like many of the collectible games for children, this game sucks out loud.

Its magnetic gimmick keeps the boy interested (for now), but there's really not much of a game here. I indulge him because he likes the little toys, but I warn you away from this if you are looking for a game.

I give it the high rating of a 3 simply becasue my son (and he alone) may convince me to play from time to time (it is mercifully quick).

As a unique concept of a game, this one has everything going for it. Some dexterity, neat bits and a mix and match squad building (yes, it's collectible but it's an easy collection).

The problem is the game play is clearly broken. The special event cards don't make any sense. There's little strategy when you pick your own units and your own cards. Why would you pick ANYTHING but the cards and units that would make you the highest scores? Most of the cards we tried were just broken and we found the cards could just be divided up without rolling a single Bakugan.

What a waste of time. These are going back to the store for a refund.

This game is utterly and truly horrible in every way--pieces that break, shitty dexterity element where the things don't trigger always even when rolling directly across the card, broken card combinations, and hell, the fact that a couple of years ago, they printed guys with 600 power, now, they print guys with over 1000 power. It's ridiculous.

BUT...

My kids love it, so I suffer through it, and they're none the wiser. Because that's our job as parents, to do what our kids enjoy, and not try to get them to play Le Havre or some other such drek.

EDIT: Shit, this game continues to be busted. To sell more each year, they just keep increasing the base power. Ridiculous! As bad as Yu-Gi-Oh with its multiple totally worthless commons.
