Step son and I found it to be a really fun game with some surprises and twists and turns. Not sure why this isn't at least 1 - 1.5 higher in terms of average here... maybe too many people paid full price?

Played at Great Hall Games (Vincent's game).

The fortunes can shift quickly with many people playing, since the leader always gets beat up. You hire rice farmers and warriors, get favors, attack, duel, and defend. The strategic key seems to be to hoard money and favors so that you have plenty for the final round of massacre. I'd like to test that out with a future play.

Overall, the game seems to have too much luck for its length (1st game was ~3.5 hours).

More of a conflict game and less of a Euro. If you like being in it for the fight and smack talk negotiations, you'll like this one. If you're looking for a friendly area control family Euro you probably won't like this game. It suits me just fine.

Initial rating of a 6 based on one play of the 2p scenario "A Troublesome Neighbor".

The scenario wasn't that great other than to teach the game mechanics. While I can see what they were trying to do balance wise by adding in a "neutral" faction, it just didn't work.

As for the game itself I can see potential and some of the ways it's mechanics work are quite suprising. (in a good way)

I would definitely like to play this again, but this time with more players. I think the sweet spot is 3-4p and I could see my rating rise.

A nice game where the board is small and you have a lot of conflict with other players. Fight for your farmers space as more space means more money and use your other characters to fight off the other players. In the larger board, with four players, there is too much money, so it is only a constraint at the start and once you pass (the second time) you may have to wait around while other complete all their actions.

Well. Stil we didn't finish it after playing over 3 hours, but we had only 2 turns to end the game. One warning: this game has unclear, buggy manual. So beware, before you will play it read errata.

It's very specific game. Something you should play just to see its originality, but... it's also very brutal play. One player said it was masochistic game. Why? Because you can destroy other player workers so many that he will and only with a palace or something like this. So he will get less and less money, so he won't have chance to change his situation. He will be irritated. He will be angry. He can even hate a game!

It works ok, but definitely doesn't shine and does not scream 'play me again!'.

The biggest drawback is by far long playing time. It's not horryfing in general (3h/4 players, 4h/5players), but in this - repetitive and a bit monotonous - title it can be really felt. This game should last AT MOST 2h. At present, the game is just way too long for what it offers..

For the wargamer or ATer looking for a longish, intensely competitive euro for their collection, it's hard to go wrong with this. Players attempt to gain control of map space using farmers (which generate income) and various types of warriors (which allow you to eliminate opposing farmers.) Games go about three hours with four players. The components are beautiful but a bit flimsy (particularly the money) and my friend's copy had a couple annoying but ultimately harmless QC issues.

It is true. You can have a lot of fun with this game. But the game totally depends on what your gamebuddies are doing and decided to do. Aspects as build up a defence or a long term strategy. It doesn't matter at all.

Besides ... why not play on the map of Japan, when the theme is historical?

Completely not my cup of tea. Direct conflict with limited means, quasi wargame-feel, a bit of ressource management. The mixture is fine but I was bored and annoyed while plaing it. In spite of nice graphics, in spite of simple rules and in spite of a few nice ideas I didn't enjoy it at all.

Not recommend it.

Some neat ideas but the game wasn't polished enough to create a fully enjoyable experience. The attacking system should have a major rework. I think that with a more interesting and fully functional battle system Rice Wars would have a been a lot better. The double pass system, the favour auctions and overall the playing on the board worked pretty well. There were also some neat tactical things with the cards. I like I said, with more work Rice Wars could have been a lot better, now it's just a game that disappers in the mass of average games.

Disappointing - I have no problem with conflict in a game, but this just didn't work. Ended up taking ages, with no one wanting to make the first move, it needs some during game scoring to encourage players to get on with it.

Serious kingmaker problems, high amount of luck of the draw, far too long for what it offers.

Rules say playing time is 60-150 minutes, depending on number of players and board side used (and i think that's still too low). Don't be fooled by the 60 minutes listed here at the geek.

Słaba ocena głównie ze względu na brak jakiejkolwiek kary za atakowanie swoim roninem wrogiego daimyo, czy Ci zginie, czy nie, nie ma znaczenia (jego utrzymanie kosztuje dokładnie tyle samo co wynajęcie). Gdyby nie ten mankament, który mocno premiuje agresywne ataki bezpośrednio na graczy, to ocena byłaby znacznie wyższa. Niestety imho gra traci na tym wiele.

A game that's reminiscent of a seventies multi-player conflict game. You quickly fill up the board with peasant counters and then it's a back and forth fight for space. A final turn slugfest may well decide it. Plays long, repetitive and uninspiring.

The Japanese-style artwork is nice. Production quality is fine, except for the nasty, flimsy money.

Update:
It's ok. Needs to be shortened. We played 4 player six round game in 4 hours. In the end nothing changes that much in a single round. In the final round all is about who can stall the game long enough to make the final move probably winning the game. There is no need for 6 rounds to make that an exiting thing. That is easily achieved in 4-5 rounds.
While shortening the game helps. We now play rounds 1&2, 3, 4&5, 6&7 as just 4 round combining them with just slight modifications, there isn't really a game there. Not a lot to influence and it all comes down to the last round and who can hold on to the last card basically.

Received the game in a combo trade (3/13/11).

I've read through the rules and have played a practice round; here are some preliminary thoughts:

1) Rice Wars is very ATTACK oriented. Every rule and advantage favors the attacker. The personal expense to the attacker whether losing or winning a battle is the same; however, a loss by the defender can be devastating.

2) The game play is rather simple with cards that allow you to bend/break the basic ruleset.

3) The artwork is very pretty but the quality of the components pales in comparison i.e paper money, flimsy player mats and aid sheets.

4) This is an area control game with a heavy attacking element fueled by a fragile economic/resource engine.

I'm anxious to try this one out with my group. I expect it'll either be a nice balance between the economic and war gamers or it'll further define the line between them.

UPDATE: 3/14/11

I played a 2 player session with my wife tonight and she actually thought it was okay; our session exceeded my expectations (though they were frightfully low). The attacks weren't as devastating as I'd originally feared and there was more money management strategy, thanks to the advisors and upkeep, than I'd thought when first reading through the rules.

All that being said I'm not a fan of the ability to attack any space regardless of geographic constraint. I still think the components are flimsy, especially the money, and the game needed more/smaller player aids.

I've rarely laughed as much as I did playing Rice Wars. Unfortunately that was due to the game being so incredibly bad that humorous approach to its glaring problems was needed to maintain players' sanity.

One of the most annoying games I've ever played. Full of screw-your-opponents (which isn't bad thing) mentality, but what makes this game bad is, that if you are the first player who will start combats, then you are in the worst position. So pass... and wait... pass... and wait. Secondly, the game is won or lost in the last round or two. This really should have some early or midgame scorings too. And last issue are those special cards, advisors which makes this fairly straightforward game too complicated.
