It has a great sci-fi setting, a foreboding atmosphere, well-differentiated characters that are true to the show, a cohesive narrative, and, refreshingly for an FFG game, it's a fairly simple design that's easy to learn and teach.

I've liked Konieczka's previous designs that I've played, but often with some reservations. He absolutely nailed this one out of the park. An instant favourite.

I own the first two of three expansions but have yet to try them. I do worry that they've over-complicated the game as I no longer feel comfortable taking it off the shelf after a long hiatus.

Captures the theme of the TV series perfectly. My first game of this was just pure pleasure from start to finish.
Tons of paranoia and accusations. A good addition for any co-op fan.

Playing as a Cylon and watching the humans unravel whilst trying to sow seeds of discontent is just too much fun to have in one game.

I absolutely love this game even though I have not seen all of the TV series. It makes me very keen to see more.
If you are a fan of the show, stop reading go and play it!

DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME if you are not comfortable with the entire result resting on a single die roll!
This has happened to me in a couple of games and it is very very annoying but oh so fantastically tense and exciting. This game holds ever so true to it's theme. It IS Battlestar Galactica no questions asked.

Finally watched the end of the TV seriesthumbsdown it has tarnished the game a little for me however if I forget about season 4 then the game is still good as it is season one/two to a T

Excellent cooperative game. Best traitor mechanism I've ever seen. Kicks the ass off of ghost stories and other recent cooperative games. Reminds me of Arkham, but the system is stripped down and you have the cylons to worry about instead- which makes for a shorter, simpler, but more fun game. Your individual turn/action is usually not that interesting but the long term group planning (we need to get some pilots out, you should take engineering skills because I think our engineer is a cylon, etc.) is pretty interesting. The guess the traitor metagame is fantastic. The ship combat is simple but provides some tension. The skill resolution, which is a sort of hidden bidding mechanism, is really clever. The variable player power characters are very different and playing each one will be a totally new experience. The components are great, rules were well written with the exception of one typo (nukes). It needed a player aid with the battle chart, but its on the back of the rules.

Overall this is a fantastic co-op game that FF thankfully didn't overchrome. The theme is great and shines through the entire game, but you don't get bogged down in rules exceptions and card text.

UPDATE: climbing my ratings, this is great fun and very replayable. The humans really have to have their shit together to win, especially if the president or admiral become cylons.

UPDATE: Humans have won! Awesome game, its a different ride every time. Sometimes its easier for the humans, sometimes for the cylons, but you always have a great story to tell after the game.

The balance is really effected by the players themselves. Our group seems to have caught on to the cylon strategies easily but we aren't the most effective humans. We may start turning the resource dials up until the humans start winning more often. GREAT GAME. This is one of my favorite games of all time, ranking up there with Titan.

Frakkin' fantastic game in just about every possible way. I'm not even going to bother describing it because if you don't already know what this game is about you owe it to yourself to go find out. Do it. DO IT NOW!

There are very few games where I will automatically buy every expansion that comes out, but this is one of them. Daybreak is likely to be the last, so once I have that this game will be complete.

Shame I so rarely ever get to actually PLAY it, but when it actually hits the table it's pure awesome.

>>Though I'm generally pretty quiet while playing this, I thoroughly enjoy it most games. It only really fails if the cylons are exposed early.
This would really suck to play with some people I know.

>I find myself always wanting to play this at the moment, but I don't think my regular group would be up for it too often. Best with 5 players I think.

I really liked my first game of this. Like Shadows of Camelot with a better game system behind it. Also like SoC, I think its probably very group dependant. Despite being long (3hrs), everyone got into the atmosphere of the first game, which really helped.

Tension has been high on every game. In this game, game doesn't play players, players make the game. Before buying this game I was afraid of replayability of this game, but after couple of games my fears diminished. Besides creating the atmosphere of the series alive, this is the best game of 2008 and probably one of the best games I've played.

This is my favorite of the hidden loyalties genre, as it strikes the best balance between free-form deduction and game-mechanical structure (since Werewolf-style free form can often go too out of hand and depend on the play group). Battlestar Galactica is my favorite TV show, and the board game does more than justice by conveying the tension, paranoia and gritty atmosphere, in addition to porting key events in the show through event cards. Is this the first ever game that does justice to its license? There's Dune, but this might be the first that captures the spirit of a TV show so well.

The weakness with hidden loyalties is the game can get boring or drawn out once you are exposed (hence it's better for the game to be short). BSG runs against type by offering >3 hours playtime, and can be subject to this, but combats it by offering many choices, and the innovative Destiny Deck mechanism. There are many ways to frak with the other side and sow confusion, many opportunities to interpret signals, many ways to frak with them mentally and spitefully, and many things still to do once your mind is somewhat made up.

The gameplay can definitely feel a little rote if the loyalties are revealed early. But the strongly integrated theme allows me to overlook this, and nearly every deficiency with this game.

Now that the arc is likely complete, the Base Game remains at a 9 due to lack of variety and some 'solvability', but the entire series is a definite, true 10, capped by the amazing Daybreak expansion. There are so many options and sandbox-element cards that no two plays will ever feel the same again.

My 2 recommendations
1. Beginner: Destination = Earth, Cylon Attack Cards (after removing 21 non-CAC Crisis Cards), no Battlestar Pegasus, no Exodus Loyalty +1 (and therefore no Conflicted Loyalties, and none of the modules from Exodus). Guaranteed 2 cylons. No Pegasus in order to get rid of Airlock and to give cylons an advantage after taking away the CFB. The thematic bonus of no Pegasus going to Earth is just gravy.

2. Expert: Destination = Ionian Nebula, every single module. No guarantee of 2 cylons, but maximum ability to cycle the Loyalty Deck (via Airlock, Personal Goals, disaster tokens and executions with Nebula etc).

3. Intermediate: (because everybody insists on the CFB but isn't experienced enough for the Nebula...) Destination = Kobol, every module, but Conflicted Loyalties and Loyalty +1 are optional. Recommend CL for 6er Mutineer (a little harder to let the cylon be the last card, + make it a little harder for humans). Recommend doing Loyalty +1 pre-sleeper if not using.

Also, Beginner is more suitable for 5-player while Expert is more suitable for 6-player (where Treachery/Mutiny kicks into overdrive, there is rule complexity from the Mutineer/Cylon Leader, and you need 4 potential human turns in between the 2 Basestar Bridge turns). And consider banning Political Prowess for Expert (due to Airlock availability) but not Beginner.

House-Rule Considerations (in decreasing order of priority)
1. Ban Cain aka Scout + Blind Jump cheese. C'mon, she was only in like 2 episodes. Added bonus of actually giving a reason to pick Adama. Negotiable if going to Earth.
2. Ban Cally. Nobody else has that good a combo of ability + miracle, and her presence makes the game less fun for everybody (totally disrupting unrevealed-cylon strategy).
3. Protect unrevealed cylons from disasters with Ionian Nebula. Just ruins it for everybody when an unrevealed cylon trips the mine, especially if through no fault of his own. Favor letting humans and unrevealed simply toss disasters away (HARDENED) when they draw them or shuffle and draw an extra Loyalty Card.
4. Tory's ability requires Consolidate Power. Else her power is out of whack compared to other card-draw characters.
5. For Crossroads, don't eliminate, just execute (and don't shuffle an extra card into Loyalty). For revealed cylon, this additionally means dropping his/her Super Crisis Card(s).

Political Prowess isn't so bad when Pegasus is often destroyed (so no Airlock), and the new Treachery/Mutiny makes people come in and out of the Brig so much that the one skill check it's used on becomes less pivotal. Plus Change of Plans.

Who I've played in Base-only:

Zarek - 1

Roslin - 1

Base: 5+3
Pegasus: 3+4
Exodus: 2+3
Daybreak: 5+5

Favorite 5-player Long
Favorite 6-player Long (with Daybreak expansion)

As a fan of the (new) series this is a '10' for me, it's great, bit of role-play, bit of paranoia and mind games and you get to play BattleStar Galactica.

If you don't know the series, it's not going to be such a great experience as you'll have less of a hook to the theme and the images and quotes on the card won't mean anything.

Game play, variable - experience depends entirely on the players, with some groups this could be a total nightmare of long drawn out tedium - but with the right group it shines.

You need to realise it is a team game (rather than co-op) and it's an experience game, if you go in with the mindset you want to just optimise your play to 'win' it's going to fall flat.

But I love it ...

*** update, 10 plays later, still love it

*** 2nd Update, played this over and over since getting it (12 plays now) and still love it. Made me want to go and rewatch the tv series again. Seems Cylons have the easier time of it, but that is because it's harder to play the humans.

Humans can win, but they need to use executive orders (so doubling the actions players are doing) and pick and choose which crisis to try to pass. Also helps to weed out the cylons quickly, or at least have the cylons running scared so they actually help in an attempt to remain hidden.

*** 3rd Update

Lost count of plays, still love it - BUT it depends massively on the group playing, with the wrong group this can bomb massively.

Planned to buy this at Essen '08, very disappointed to find out that there wasn't a single copy left on Friday morning. Clearly FFG didn't brought enough copies to the show on purpose, so that it would be sold out on day 1, creating a hype about it to increase sales even more after the show. Received it from Secret Santa though. After playing it: this will easily become one of my favorites. A game of Paranoia with a lot of interaction and heated discutions: who is a cylon?

Although most of my plays are via Play By Forum here on BGG, tabletop is still the way to go when you can. This is definitely the most thematic game in my collection: like the TV show (regardless of how you feel about the later seasons), it feels both epic and small-scale at once, with the same sense of paranoia and impending doom. Rules-wise, it's reasonably complex, especially once you add expansions (although even then, it's still no Arkham Horror). However, once you've got a grip on the mechanics, they sort of fade into the background and it becomes all about the cat-and-mouse game between the Humans and the Cylons. Simply an incredible experience: few other games even come close.

If I have one complaint about the BSG system, it's that each expansion rewrites rules and portions of the game after they're well established (new Cylon and Colonial One locations, new rules for executions and handing off of excess Loyalty cards, new Treachery cards, etc.). In order to only have to teach the game one way, I've started off brand new players with the expansions, which would not have been my preference. And once you do that, you get some dilution in the Skill decks, and key cards like Executive Order and Launch Scout don't come up quite as much.

My thoughts on the different numbers of players:
1-2: Yes, FFG has released official rules for playing solo or with one other person. These are good for learning the basics of the game (how skill checks and Cylon Attacks work, etc.), but they don't give a satisfying game experience. If you're looking for an epic co-op/semi-coop game for 1-2 players, keep looking.
3-4: Haven't tried yet and in no hurry to.
5: The sweet spot. I'm vaguely curious about how replacing one of the hidden Cylons with a Cylon Leader would work, but the 3/2 split of Humans vs. hidden Cylons is just about perfect.
6: The second-best number, mainly because the more, the merrier, and also the ideal number if you want to play with a Cylon Leader. Otherwise, you'll need to play with either the Sympathizer (base game) or Mutineer (Daybreak). You can also check out FFG's official "No Sympathizer" variant.
7: Only played via PBF. I'm a little more open to trying this number in person now that our group has more experienced players.

My preferred combination of expansions:
*All core components (characters, skill cards, Crisis cards, Destinations, etc.) from all expansions
*Kobol objective
*Pegasus board
*Mutiny deck, new Treachery deck and board overlays from Daybreak
*Cylon Fleet board, plus its related components (although I won't insist upon it)
*Motive cards for Cylon Leaders

Saving for later:
*Personal Goals & Final Five cards
*New Caprica
*Ionian Nebula (Allies, Trauma, etc.)
*The Search for Home (Demetrius, Missions, Earth, etc.)

Favorite characters, including the expansions:
Political Leader: Lee Adama (alt.), then Baltar (original)
Military Leader: Adama, then Gaeta
Pilot: Apollo (original), then Starbuck
Support: Cally, and it isn't even close (although I am looking forward to trying Cult Leader Baltar)
Cylon Leader: Leoben, for now

Check out this blog entry to read up on my history as a BSG PBF player with the NCC-1701 crew.
